PRESIDENT’S LETTER Our Annual Dinner and Meeting was once again a very enjoyable event. It had a good turn-out, but was not as good as it had been in recent years. I partially attribute this to the heating problems which plagued the event last year, but the Crowne Plaza was well heated this year and the food once again was delicious. I do hope those of you who stayed away this year will join us once again at our next Annual Dinner. Even before the dinner, our second Annual Brunch will be held at the Crowne Plaza on June 9th. Last year’s brunch was wonder- ful and I am sure it will be equally enjoyable this year. See you there. I was happy to see various non-board members helping out on Sunday at the January sectional. Your efforts were noticed and very much appreciated. If any of you would like to be named formally to one of our commit- tees, despite being a non board member, we would love to hear from you. Currently, we have a number of non board members who are active participants on several of our committees, but it would be great to have even greater involvement. This also could be a way for anyone who thinks he/she might want to run for the board to get an idea of what types of things we do. A warm thank you to all the non-board members who so generously help out with the work. I hope you all survived the winter well. I, for one, am very happy that spring has finally arrived. I hope it tempts you all to attend all the wonderful events we have coming up. This ‘n That From Your District Director

As many of you know, l recently had surgery to re-

move a malignant tumor from my lower back and to

rebuild one of the vertebra; I have deeply appreciated

the many supportive cards, phone calls and e-mails.

The surgery was successful and I am getting stronger

day by day. For now, I expect to stay on top of things

via e-mail and computer; I hope it will not be long be-

fore I again see you at the bridge table.

As I was not able to attend the Board meetings or

the NABC in Saint Louis, I was pleased that Carlos

Munoz, our District 3 Treasurer from Unit 188, repre-

sented us; by all accounts did a marvelous job. We are

lucky to have so many capable people who share a

commitment to our District. Many thanks, Carlos.

In St. Louis, the first ever 0-10,000 Swiss Team

event was held. The ACBL board will evaluate the re-

sponse in order to determine the wisdom of making it a

regular event in the future. If any of you participated, I

will welcome your feedback on the experience.

I hope many of you will attend the Grand National

Teams Final on April 6th in White Plains. The details

appear on our web site.

The next regional will be in Saratoga Springs in

June. I very much look forward to attending – it will

be my inaugural return to tournament bridge – where I

hope to welcome many of you to this special event. It

has been renamed for Norma Shelly who was a vital

presence for many years in Unit 115.

I also plan to attend the board meetings and the

NABC in Atlanta during the summer. I will hope to

see many of you there.

Again, my sincere thanks for your support during

this difficult period.

Glenda Calkins, District Director

Bidding commentary: This deal is an example of how a rather large penalty can be exacted at the one level! West has a

normal takeout double. North’s redouble shows 11+ high-card points plus a likely balanced hand. North need not redou-

ble with every hand of that strength. Distributional hands often do better by starting with a forcing, unlimited, one-level

response (if possible). However, a new suit response at the two level is not forcing. Responder is more or less obliged to

redouble holding a five- or six-card minor with 11+ HCP.

After a redouble, the doubling side, outgunned point-wise, can be in a heap of trouble if they have no eight-card fit.

After an opposing run-out (1♠), if opener or responder has four cards in the runout suit headed by an honor or two, that

player is expected to double. After a redouble, any double by the opener or the responder is a penalty double and partner

is expected to honor that double by passing holding two or more cards in the opponent’s suit. Finally, after a redouble,

the redoubling side plays the hand or the opponents play it doubled. The opponents shall not be let off the hook!

Lead commentary: As South, with strong trumps, lead from a sequence rather than shortness.

Play commentary: As East, if you can squirm out of this mess with five tricks, well done. The plan is to try to ruff a

diamond in dummy.

Defensive commentary: Unless the defense loses its way, the contract figures to be defeated two or three tricks, North-

South collect 500 or 800 points on a deal that might not have reached game against silent opposition.
