AUGUST, 2014 Education and certification are paramount to your career. Your ISM GGR Board held their annual planning session in early June. One of the items discussed was how to increase and improve the hours of educational opportunities for our members. We currently hold eight PDMs in Grand Rapids and another six PDMs in Kalamazoo. For the meetings held in Grand Rapids, we are going to be presenting three to four programs of two-hours each and the balance one-hour each. For the evenings in which we have two-hour sessions, we will be having buffets where you will be able to eat and have a working session at the same time. Our goal will always be to get you out by 8:00 PM at the latest. We will also be having our webinars with ISM and an all-day seminar. Total hours just from your affiliate will be 25 educational hours along with the many other free seminars that are posted on our website: www.ismggr.org This does not include the Supply Chain Management Conference held every spring. ISM Greater Grand Rapids is a co-planner and co-sponsor of that event. It also does not include the International Conference being held in Phoenix, Arizona as ISM celebrates its 100th anniversary. I came across an article in Battery Power eNewsletter. Although the focus was all about the Tesla Electric Vehicle (EV), one statement in the article stood out for me. There were only four words in the statement which, in perspective, apply to our personal and professional lives. HE WHO INNOVATES WINS. Where is he coming from? Maybe in a business but in my personal life? The challenges/opportunities are in both of these areas. INNOVATION is completely in our hands. If Tesla stayed in the same room, listened to the same pundits, they would not, I venture, be in the most exciting times of EV history. Take this challenge and look at your professional goals. Map out your goals and how you are going to achieve them. Then tear up that plan and write at the top of a new sheet INNOVATE. Now start a new list bringing together your personal and professional goals. Don’t worry about the how to achieve these goals, that comes when you are in earnest to achieve them. It is not easy, but the task should take you out of your box and make you take some risks. Here is where the Institute for Supply Management fits in. At the local and national level they provide you the elements needed in your MAP. They will provide you the opportunity to INNOVATE. It can be a multiple of items from formal certification learning to networking with SCM like yourself at the local level. Our local affiliate also is a place to engage in activities to further your personal skills. Being a volunteer provides many innovative opportunities. You have to take the action on your behalf. It is not coming to you. You have to go out and get it. We are also looking forward to serve you with quality educational opportunities. Please join us as we start our programming on September 9, 2014. Alas, it seems summer ended way too soon. Thomas Cole, C.P.M. AUGUST, 2014Education and certification are paramount to your career.

Michigan has a Logistics and Supply Chain Plan! Michigan’s Logistics & Supply Chain Strategic Plan is the state’s blueprint for accelerating Michigan business competitiveness. Signed by Governor Snyder in 2013, the strategy is a statewide collaborative effort targeting cost, cycle time and risk reductions in companies’ logistics and supply chain operations. During our dinner meeting on September 9th, Steve Trecha, LSC Strategy Facilitator, and President and CEO of Integrated Strategies, will outline the strategy and introduce programs our firms may benefit from. Your company and you can play a key role in helping to drive the strategy forward. In the meantime, here are three things you can do to learn more and immediately begin to take advantage of the LSC strategy: 1. Check out the LSC strategy; simply Google – Michigan Logistics and Supply Chain Strategic Plan.2. Register your company as a Pure Michigan Business Connect Company: www.puremichiganb2b.com. This is a tool developed to connect Michigan businesses to other Michigan businesses.3. Learn how your company can become more involved in the State’s LSC strategy. Contact Steve Trecha: [email protected] or Peter Anastor: [email protected]. Be sure to attend this session. You will find Steve to be a dynamic and entertaining speaker. Speaker Bio Steve Trecha is President and CEO of Integrated Strategies: www.sourcing.com. During the last 29 years, Steve has consulted around the world with over 75 companies in supply chain, strategic sourcing, and/or business transformation. His focus is identifying and capturing double-digit value measured in cost reductions, revenue enhancement, business efficiencies, asset utilization, and personnel enrichment. Currently, Steve serves as a strategy facilitator for the State of Michigan’s Logistics and Supply Chain Strategy. His focus is strategy implementation. Steve is a distinguished alumnus holding a BS in Applied Engineering Sciences and an MBA in Materials and Logistics Management from Michigan State University. He instructs at Wayne State University in Strategic Procurement and serves on a number of community boards. Steve has a great wife, Ellen, and three children all who either attend or have matriculated from U of M.

September Professional Development Meeting

Happenings At ISM-GGRAffiliate excellence awards recognize ISM affiliates that demonstrate an awareness and distinction in their professional operations, educational offerings, and ability to recruit, train, and retain members while at the same time communicating the value and prestige of ISM and the supply management profession. This year, ISM Greater Grand Rapids was one of the ISM affiliates to earn this recognition. ISM Greater Grand Rapids would like to thank our members for their support and our Board of Directors team for all the effort that went in to making this achievement happen.

April 2011, Inside Supply Management® Vol. 22, No. 2, page 36

Supply management leaders must be protectors of new ideas. There are great masses of people who love to kill new ideas before they have a chance to take root and grow. The biggest reason for this is because new ideas represent change. People seldom embrace change at the first opportunity; instead, they cling to the ways of the past.

Early in my career, I served on the board of directors of a charitable organization. The executive director never met a new idea she liked. Finally, her negativity became such an issue that a vote was held to terminate her employment. She survived the vote, but was given a direct and rather harsh “plan of improvement.” One of the biggest items on the plan was to embrace, or at least consider, new ideas.

During the first board meeting after signing the plan, someone raised his hand and suggested a new idea. True to form, the executive director shot down his idea. In support of the board member, I spoke up and insisted that the idea was a good one, and the battle continued. The executive director never was able to modify her negative management ways. Three months later, the board of directors took a second vote, and she was terminated, unanimously. It was a bold decision for a volunteer board to make.

Why are some people so eager to cling to the past and so quick to kill new ideas? The answer is simple: Accepting a new idea requires a change in thinking. After we have established long-standing patterns and opinions, the first reaction when someone suggests something new and different is often to attack the new idea.

Reverse Their ThinkingIs it possible to teach people to embrace new ideas that may be different from their established way of thinking? Yes, but it must be done subtly.

When change is proposed or imminent, dictating what to do and how to do it is often ineffective, causing resentment or an “us versus them” mentality. However, providing subtle hints about a new direction and its benefits can encourage employees to approach it with a positive attitude, and possibly offer some ideas for the plan. Employees will be more willing to embrace new ideas if they know the benefits this new direction can provide. Also, allow people to add to the concept and shape its genesis and implementation — it will encourage a true sense of ownership.

Also, use time to your advantage. Sometimes all it takes is time for each person to consider an idea before they commit to it. At first, a new concept may sound overwhelming, and the first inclination is to rip it apart and dismiss it. However, acknowledge each person’s commitment to the idea and solicit opinions and contributions; this can go a long way in acceptance of change.

The Other Side’s PerspectiveBill Bernbach, one of the founders of ad agency Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB) — famous for the “Think Small” Volkswagen campaign of the 1960s — carried a small piece of paper in his pocket that he pulled out during heated discussions and read silently to himself. The paper stated, “He may be right.” When we hear new ideas, we all need to take a deep breath, take a step back and say to ourselves, “He or she may be right.”

I try to do this each time I hear a new idea, even when it is counter to the way I think. You have to take time to learn how the other side thinks, or you will forever be stuck in your old ways.

Personal Connections: Work. Life. Balance. Convince people to embrace a new way of thinking

by giving them a sense of ownership of the idea.
