March - Lions and Lambs After the February we just experienced, it is easy to not be concerned about potential weather swings in March. The Provincial Executive is commandeering the District Presidents Workshop in mid-month to focus on the proposed changes in governance. Our District Senators, Gary FIck and George Denny, have been invited, and I will be there wearing two hats, as District 24 President and Constitution Committee member. From the agenda it appears that the process may be quite accelerated. Your representatives will listen and contribute and will do our best to support our members. So far it doesn't appear that there will be any significant impact at the local level. Now that you have received your newsletter, I hope you have taken the time to choose one or more activities. Your committee chairs have done their usual superlative job arranging these for you. Please note that despite the rumours of change, the Spring AGM and luncheon will be at Qssis as usual. I hope to see many of you there! Bill Sparks

March!

RTO ERO Foundation News, Gary Fick

"The RTO/ERO Charitable Foundation continues to support research into ways to improve the lives of seniors. Last year it

awarded $100,000 to fund four grants in Aging Research and Training at medical schools across Ontario; as well as an

inaugural grant of $50,000 to create a community-based model for identifying and engaging vulnerable isolated seniors.

Many members are choosing our charity when paying tribute to friends, colleagues or family members who have passed

away. Cards are available at many funeral homes but if not, they are available to be picked up from the Foundation office,

or download the Memorial Donor Form from the website."

The RTO/ERO Foundation has just

announced its first-ever Social Isolation

grant call for proposals! Two grants of up

$25,000 each are available for community

organizations that are registered Canadian

charities, and that promote the well-being of

older adults as core to their mission. If you

are aware of an organization in your

community that is using innovative

approaches to reducing social isolation in

seniors, you can get the Grant Criteria from

Yolanda Bernstein at the Foundation office.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FOUNDATION CAN

ONLY SUPPORT GROUPS WHICH ARE

REGISTERED CANADIAN CHARITIES.

Goodwill Telephone, Lynne Horvath Our annual Goodwill Telephone campaign for 2017 will be starting within the next

month or two. New lists are being compiled to include all senior members ages 80

years old or more. Cards will be sent out to the members in this group who do not

live in GTA. We have several members who volunteer to do these calls every year

and we really appreciate all the calls they make and the support they give to our

committee. Thank you!

Thank you to an observant member who called me to report an error published in Beyond the Blackboard regarding the new plan number for Alliance Global assistance. It is 7106, as stated on the front page of your November copy of Going Places. If you have questions or concerns about your RTO health plan I’m here to assist. Contact me by email or phone. March is Nutrition Month (NC) If you're looking for the most reliable information about your daily diet, be sure to understand the difference between a registered dietitian and a nutritionist. In Ontario, “nutritionist” is not a protected title. Anyone can legally provide nutrition information and call themselves a nutritionist. On the other hand, the title 'dietitian' is protected by law. To be qualified to be a member of the College of Dietitians of Ontario and to use the title “dietitian”, a person must have the foundational knowledge and practice skills normally acquired through a four-year university degree in science and nutrition and almost a full year of internship. They must also pass the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination. These professionals have “Registered Dietitian” or the RD after their name. Public Health Nutritionists are also Registered Dietitians, but they have completed a master's degree relevant to public health. What sets Registered Dietitians apart is that they are the only regulated nutrition professional in the province. This means they are accountable to their regulatory body, the College of Dietitians of Ontario, for safe competent and ethical nutrition services. RDs are also trained to consider how culture, traditions, values, beliefs, family and personal lifestyles all affect nutrition health. When you receive services from an RD, you can expect respectful and collaborative care. Additional information is available online at www.mydietitian.ca.

At Eatright Ontario you can speak to a registered dietician for free. Their Registered Dieticians can answer your questions, send you information, and tell you about local community services.

Call 1.877.510.5102 Email your nutrition question and receive a personal reply: www.eatrightontario.ca

Visit the Eatright website: www.eatrightontario.ca to find articles, healthy recipes, and nutrition videos; create your own menu using “My Nutrition Planner”; sign up for their eNews, a monthly email with nutrition tips, recipes and updates.

Hava*Java District 24 invites all district members to get together, at Calabria Bakery, 1770 Midland Avenue in Scarborough (between Lawrence Ave. E. and Ellesmere Rd. on the west side). We hope that you will join us for a coffee and pastry which will be subsidized up to $3.00 by RTO/ERO District 24. There is parking at the front and back of the bakery.

Book Club, June Bourdon & Gloria Courtney

The book club is a roaring success and we are at full capacity with just over thirty enthusiastic participants.

We are unable to accommodate any more people, but

we will add names of interested readers to a wait list.

However, we will publish the titles and brief descriptions

of books so that everyone can enjoy these selections

and read along at home. Perhaps someone might just

want to start a second group. “We continue to meet at the Agincourt Recreation Centre, 31 Glen Watford Drive the last Wednesday of each month. New members of RTO are welcome to join us for any of these books. We have coffee and/or tea at 2.15 pm and then start our discussions at 2.30 pm. We hope you can join us for a lively hour of discussion and opinions.”

Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder and One Man’s Fight for Justice by Bill Browder

A real-life political thriller about an American financier in the Wild East of Russia, the murder of his

principled young tax attorney, and his dangerous mission to expose the Kremlin’s corruption. A

on overpowering odds to change the world.

Pensions and Retirement, Terry Smith

DRIVER LICENCE RENEWAL: A. GENERAL

1. According to Ontario licensing renewal procedures, Ontario drivers in Classes A, B, C, D, E, F, G M, and M with condition “L” should receive a renewal application or postcard in the mail to the last address registered on the Ministry of Transportation’s database approximately 60 to 90 days prior to your driver's licence expiry date. 2. If you do not receive or have lost a renewal application, a new one can be printed, and your licence renewed while you wait, at any Driver & Vehicle Licence Issuing Office. 3. You can renew an expired driver's licence, without taking tests, within one year of the licence expiry date.

B. INVALID LICENCE

1. If a driver's licence has been invalid (expired, cancelled or suspended) for more than one, but fewer than three years, you must visit a DriveTest centre to complete a vision test. 2. If your licence has been invalid for more than three years, you must pass vision, knowledge and road tests. 3. If your licence has been invalid for over three years but not more than 10 years, you have to reapply under the Graduated Licensing Program at a DriveTest centre; the mandatory waiting periods are waived. 4. If your licence has been invalid for over ten years, you have to reapply under the Graduated Licensing Program at a DriveTest centre but serve all the mandatory waiting periods. For further information, visit www.drivetest.ca and www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/gradu/index.shtml C. RENEWAL PROCESS

1. To renew your licence, take the Renewal Application or postcard to a Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office. 2. You may be asked to sign the application. 3. You will be required to show identification (verifying name, date of birth and signature), pay the required renewal amount, and have your photograph taken if required. 4. The renewal fee is $75.00. 5. All payments made by personal cheques must be certified unless sent by mail. 6. The DriveTest website lists the acceptable documentation under How to Apply for a Driver’s Licence in Ontario. NOTE: For Classes A, B, C, E and F or Condition Z (air brake endorsement), you must go to a DriveTest centre to take the required tests. Once you complete the required tests, you must take the renewal application to a Driver and Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office to renew your licence. For further information, visit www.drivetest.ca and www. ontario.ca/en/services_for_residents/STEL02_155833 D. DRIVERS AGED 80 AND OVER

1. The Senior Driver Renewal Program requires drivers aged 80 years and over to renew their licence every two years. 2. Once you reach age 80, you must take a vision test, a multiple-choice test on rules of the road and road signs, and take part in a Group Education Session before you can renew your licence. 3. A small number of drivers may also be asked to take a road test to have their driving skills assessed. 4. The Group Education Session is a class where a group of about 15 drivers aged 80 and older will receive information about new traffic laws and how aging affects driving, driving tips to help older drivers and a review of road signs.

5. The information will be provided by a trained driving counsellor who will lead a discussion on these topics. You will also be provided with a booklet on senior driver safety. You may access the booklet at www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/senior/senior.shtml 6. You should plan on spending approximately three hours at the session. The group discussion portion lasts about 90 minutes. 7. As you approach your 80th birthday, you will be mailed a letter and a driver’s licence renewal form 90 days before your driver’s licence expires. Your driver’s licence usually expires on your date of birth. 8. This letter will explain what you have to do to renew your licence. After receiving the notice, it is important to call your regional scheduling centre to book an appointment. 9. You must also keep your licence renewal form and bring the completed form with you when you attend the Group Education Session. 10. You will be able to take the vision and written test and attend the Group Education Session all in one day at one of the many locations across the province. The whole process takes about three to three and one-half hours. 11. The Ministry will mail you a letter and a licence renewal form 90 days before your 80th birthday. The letter will tell you what you need to do and the phone number to call to book your session. 12. You will need to telephone the Ministry to book the session. You can go to the location most convenient for you. For more information visit www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/senior/renewal80.shtml 13. Road tests are not part of the session. If there are indications that you may pose a road safety risk (for example, if you have demerit points on your driver record), however, you will have to take a road test. 14. Having to take a road test doesn’t mean you will lose your licence. 15. There is no charge for taking the test and you will be allowed to try the test more than once if you are not successful on your first try. The counsellor at your Group Education Session will discuss this with you. For further information, visit www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/index.html or call 416.235.2999 or toll-free 1.800.387.344
