IN PARTNERSHIP WITH:

Greetings All…and Welcome to 2019…from the Defense Acquisition University Alumni Association, Jacksonville, Florida Chapter

It is unbelievable that come April the Chapter will be in operation for 5 years. We started with a team of 6 who wanted to make a difference for the AT&L Workforce “AND” the local community and what a ride it has been. Because and Only Because of a group of EXCEPTIONAL individuals we have exceeded just about every goal we had established at stand-up. So before we get into an overview of the Chapter accomplishments I’d like to recognize the individuals who made all of the success possible:

The VP Operations: Mr. Tony Conard, the VP Outreach: LTJG Lee Butler, Treasurer: Ms. Runnetia O’Bryant, VP Communications/PAO/Newsletters: Mr. Grant Meadows, Scholarship Team: Mrs. Elizabeth Nealin and Mr. John Martin, Golf Tournaments: Mr. Terry Tillman and Mr. Wayne Myers, Chapter Strategic Planning: Mrs. Jackie Wimpee, Chapter FACEBOOK: Mrs. Kellie Davis, Newsletter Coordinator: Mrs. Mallory Guldi (Middleburg High School Design Team), and from the Community: Tory Hamlin Allstate, Ron McCann State Farm, ASI, Select Health and Wellness, AT&T Pioneers, Bull Gear Logistics, USO Greater Jacksonville, NMCRS Jacksonville, Ace Hardware, Mallicoat Heritage LLC, HELP Handyman, Career Skills Today LLC, American Legion Riders #283, Chic Fillet, Eagle Harbor, Ruby Tuesday, Eagle Harbor, Dick’s Wings, Bullwinkle Trailer Sales, Repair IT LLC and PGA Tour Operations. President’s Letter Cont.• Started the College Scholarship Sponsor Program and now have four community sponsors: AT&T

Pioneers, Select Health and Wellness, Tory Hamlin Allstate and ASI.• Awarded 11 college scholarships via the Clay County Chamber of Commerce partnership “and” the

new Liz Nealin Scholarship Award.• Continued our newsletter publishing partnership with Middleburg High School Design Team (3

newsletters per year).• Increased our support to the Greater Jacksonville USO and NMCRS Jacksonville in the form of

checks and staff lunches.• Via the two DAUAA Jacksonville AT&L Golf Fundraiser events obtained community and local

business support for 72 local active duty military to play for free at the golf events. This brings us to 236 free paid for active duty military.

So, what is the Chapter Looking at NEXT?

Glad You Asked...

Here is “OUR” 2019 Chapter Goals!

• Start the USO/NMCRS Business Sponsorship Program where we contact over 600 Veteran or Veteran Spouse Owned Businesses for annual support.

• Increase local High School Community Service Activities.• Expand the number of annual Chapter scholarships awarded via the Clay County Chamber of

Commerce and the Elizabeth Nealin Engineering Excellence Sustainment Award Scholarships.• Expand chapter partnerships with MOAA, NOAA, American Legion, NCMA and local Rotary

NE Florida STEM Science FairNortheast Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair (NEFRSEF)

February 10-12, 2019

In 2018 DAU AA Jacksonville Chapter provided volunteers (judges) and financial awards to support NAVAIR for the event. With the financial and volunteer support of NAVAIR, DAUAA and other organizations, approximately 300 students from 23 public and private schools in Duval and Nassau Counties presented their projects to judges. It was a racially diverse group of students with males and females equally represented. The top 43 students from 10 different schools were selected to present their projects at the state fair and 4 students were selected to present their projects at the International Science Fair in Pittsburgh. Not only is Northeast Florida one of the largest regions to participate at the State Science Fair, but a higher percentage of NEFRSEF students win awards at the State Fair than do most other regions.

Teachers, parents and students are proud of their accomplishments:

• At NEFRSEF• Students were awarded a total of $4,500 in cash from 38 different organizations• At the Science and Engineering Fair of Florida• Two students, one in middle school and one in high school, were presented Ying Scholar Trophies

and cash as the Grand Award Winners.• Thirty-seven students earned place awards and special prizes, which included $3,150 in cash and

scholarships.• At the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix• Two students were place award winners in the Categories of Health Science and Engineering,

which included $2,500 in cash.• In the Broadcom Masters Competition two middle school students were named semifinalists.

The Board and Operations Committee are hard at work to provide the best possible science fair experience for all students again this year. NEFRSEF is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to promote a scientifically literate society through scientific and engineering inquiry and competition. It is our goal to promote the lifelong skills of critical thinking, problem solving, and analysis of data, communication, and public speaking. The fair is affiliated with the State and International fairs, which means two things: 1. The students conduct their projects following the safe and ethical guidelines of the International Science and E ngineering Fair, and 2. Students are selected to represent the region at the state and international science fairs, where they can earn special prizes,

NE Florida STEM Science Fair Cont.place awards, full tuition scholarships and cash. Our past winners are now successfully working in all fields of science and engineering, including medicine and health, chemistry, bioengineering, health care and computer science. They attribute their success in part to the skills and knowledge that they gained while doing their science projects. Forbes Magazine just named past NEFRSEF winner, Christopher Davlantes, to their 2018 list of 30 Under 30 in the category of energy. Chris was named for his outstanding efforts to fuel a more sustainable future. https://www.forbes.com/30-under-30/2018/#76cca1c51aaf.

NEFRSEF is solely funded by the donations of corporations, educational institutions and individuals. NEFRSEF 2019 is scheduled for February 10-12. Thus far, teachers from 29 public and private schools have committed to sending 275 students to the fair.

DAUAA Jacksonville Florida Chapter WILL AGAIN support the NEFRSEF in 2019.

There is more information about the fair at the website: www.nefrsef.org.Feel free to contact Marion Zeiner at [email protected] or calling him at, 904-396-5751, ext. 1412.

“I have known I wanted to be an engineer since I was young. From this I found that my passion for

both flight and space travel could be pursued by becoming an Aerospace engineer and working on the flight vehicles I have spent so much time in the past years studying. This scholarship helps me pursue

this dream by allowing me to get through another semester without having to pay for textbooks out of my pocket. This is amazing for me as I am having to pull out student loans that there are portions that are being taken care of through scholarships. I would like to thank everyone involved with this

scholarship that made it possible that I could receive it.”

Elizabeth D. Nealin, Engineering ExcellenceSustainment (EES) Scholarships Cont.

“The work of an engineer, in whatever field, has an impact on the world around us. The whole point of engineering is to find new ways to solve problems and make a difference by doing so. Engineering

allows me to apply my interest to the real world and expand my abilities every day with new challenges. Engineers are like the wizards of our society. Everyone needs them to fix their problems,

but aren’t sure how they do it. This scholarship will benefit me because it will enable me to spend more time studying than wondering how I will cover books for the semester. Solving problems just

like an engineer. “

Select HealthDo you have a 42-pound head?

Well it depends... do you have good head posture?

Did you know that for every inch of Forward Head Posture (FHP), the weight of your head on your spine can increase by 10 pounds?

The effects of poor posture go far beyond just looking awkward. Research presented at the 31st Annual International Conference of the IEEE EMBS Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, (2009) stated; “Over time poor posture results in pain, muscle aches, tension and headache and can lead to long term complications such as osteoarthritis. Forward head carriage may promote accelerated aging of intervertebral joints resulting in degenerative joint disease.” It appears posture impacts and modulates all bodily functions from breathing to hormonal production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse and lung capacity are among the many conditions influenced by faulty posture.

“90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine” Dr. Roger Sperry, (Nobel Prize Recipient for Brain Research)

Additionally, Dr Roger Sperry demonstrated that 90% of the brain’s energy output is used in relating the physical body to gravity. Only 10% has to do with thinking, metabolism, and healing. Consequently, a FHP will cause the brain to rob energy from thinking, metabolism, and immune function to deal with abnormal gravity/posture relationships and processing. Degenerative neck pain goes hand-in-hand with balance problems especially in the elderly, as sensitive cervical spinal nerves combined with the inner ear’s vestibular balance system stabilize equilibrium. What’s more, signals from the first 4 cervical vertebrae are a major source of stimuli for regulating the body’s pain-controlling chemicals (endorphins). FHP dramatically reduces endorphin production by limiting the cervical spine’s range of motion. Inadequate endorphin production up-regulates the central nervous system causing non-painful sensations to be experienced as pain.

The tough part of this is that many of us are used to the pain and miss the signs of reduced functions brought on by our poor posture. Some of the recognizable traits seen in those presenting FHP are: • Suboccipital pain syndromes (pain at the base of the skull)• Mouth breathing (sleep apnea)• Difficulty swallowing• Teeth clenching• Face & neck pain• Migraine Headaches• Uncoordinated gait and loss of body balanceIf you see yourself in any of the above, it’s time to consider seeking care. Taking care of

your body early will keep you living a life without limits the natural way.
