Fellow Lions:

We are inching towards the last

quarter of this Lions fiscal year. We have a lot ahead of us in fundraising, administrative functions and service

activities. To cite a few, Strawberry sale, White Cane, WSSB Track Meet,

installation of new members, and in-stallation of a new President. This is only a partial list. Please check the

calendar for the complete list. Worthy of note for the month of

March is our participation in the Dis-trict 19G Spring Conference. Fort Vancouver Lions Club had a great

showing of 13 individuals, 12 mem-bers and spouses. Dotty Scott and

Helen Sutfin were recognized by the LCIF President for their hard work in founding and guiding the Leo Leg-

ends, a club for 12-18 year old girls and boys. We received several

awards as well for our Web site, Busi-ness Card, Newsletter, and Achieve-ment Speech.

Terry Sutfin was elected as a trus-tee for the Lions Sight and Hearing

Foundation. These achievements are truly a group effort. Thanks to all who helped. The conference was educa-

tional, social and fun. Nancy and Bruce Preece, and Hallie Walker at-

tended Leadership 101. All members attended interesting seminars. Some pinochle and clamming had to be

Benefit Concert

April 5, 2013 Thank you to everyone who helped with our most recent Benefit Con-cert on April 5th. Most of all, thank you to the musicians. They do-nated their time and talents to help us raise funds for all of our con-

certs. Both “Three Together” and “The Rite of Spring” are fantastic bands and do a lot of charity work. If you ever get a chance to see them, thank them for their help.

I would also like to thank all of the sponsors for this Spring’s concert: US Digital again donated $2,000.00, we received donations of $250 for Craig Limoges and the New Phoenix Casino. $100 donors were:

Salmon Creek Postal Annex, Blind Onion, Shanahans Tavern, Total Mer-chants (Cheri Perry), and Hydraulics Inc (Adam Hegewald). New Sea-sons donated a $50.00 gift card, and Beaches Restaurant donated eight

$25 gift certificates. Dotty Scott again created our promotional flyer and the Concert Pro-gram. Rick Giles printed all of the tickets. Len Ledger helped with all of

the organization of the show and got Beaches and New Season to do-nate. Lori Pulliam donated water and cookies that we sold that night and also manned the ticket booth. Shelly Brown took pictures and

video of our secret performer. Attending the concert from our club were: The Browns, Milligans, Pulliams, Nielsons, Giles, Adam Hegewald and Carol Bisbee. Thanks for attending.

Now for the secret performer: Rick Giles was Ricky Demento, relative of the great Dr. Demento and sang his classic, “Shaving Cream.” Rick did a great job and if you come to lunch next Friday, April 12th, you will

see the performance. We will also get it on our website and perhaps You Tube also. The band rehearsed with Rick only 2 times, but he memorized the song and put on a great and memorable per-

formance. We had a pretty good walk up crowd and raised almost $1,000 in ticket sales. We sold the New Seasons $50.00 gift card for

$40.00 and one of the Beaches certificates for $20. We have 7 Beaches gifts to sell at our next Friday lunch meeting to finish

our sales for the concert. With the previous ticket sales and the $3,100 we made from ad sales we should gross over $4,400.00. Expenses will be: $500 donated back to the Foundation at WSSB

(The Pacific Foundation for Blind Children), $400 for the Sound System that evening and $65.52 for the Concert Programs (PIP).

So we should net over $3000 for our charities.

Look for our next concert in October. We are considering a Lions

Talent Show.

RENT, the Musical: On Saturday March 9, fourteen members of the Ft Vancouver Li-

ons club and their guests attended the musical, RENT in Decker Theater at Clark College. Prior to the musical we all met at

Beaches’ Restaurant on the Columbia River for a social hour and dinner. One of the highlight of the meal was the excellent service

provided by Robby and Danny Pulliam. A good time was had by all.

to benefit two great schools!

The School of Piano Technology for the Blind (Piano Hospital) and the Pacific Founda-tion for Blind Children (WSSB) are hosting a concert featuring three great pianists, who

have overcome total blindness to excel at piano performance. The concert will be held at the Fort Vancouver High School Auditorium, 5700 E. 18th St. at 2pm on Sunday April

14th. Tickets are $40 per person. Tickets are available at the Piano Hospital or online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/353379. There will also be an auction for several ex-

citing items, including a getaway for 5 nights at Sun River, OR, a luxury cabin stay in Kellogg, ID and more. There will be a signup at club meetings to allow for a reserved

section for our club and to plan the Sunday Brunch before the concert.

What’s Next from

the Social Committee?

Ken and I would like to Thank You for all your prayers and kindness you have

shown us, following the death of my oldest son, Kevin. I didn't realize how much comfort cards can be at a time like this.

WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY

Friday, March 1, Fort Vancouver Lions: Hallie Walker, Roy Pulliam, Sandy

Hammond, Jerry Jacobus, Carol Bisbee, Bill Shalaby, Sandy and Randy Foster, Lee

Denny, Larry Ball, and Terry and Helen Sutfin helped the First Graders at Washing-

ton Elementary School celebrate READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY. The Lions read to

small groups of students, who then had the opportunity to select a new book to take

home. Lions reading to first graders happens each year as part of the school district

celebration of Dr. Suess’ birthday.

WSSB Track Meet This year’s track meet at the Washington State School for the Blind will be on May

16th. We are hoping for: wonderful weather, plenty of volunteers, and most impor-tantly everyone having lots of fun.

Student athletes from all over Washington and Oregon, will run, jump and throw all day long. No matter what their disability, they will competed with smiles on their

faces as everyone cheers them on. Events include sprints and long distance runs, standing and running long jump, the shot put and modified throw, and the high jump.

We will again serve over 300: athletes and their families, all of the volunteers, and the staff, Johnsonville Brats for lunch. Johnsonville donates the brats. Frito Lay do-

nates chips. Our member, Tracy Hein of Sacred Grounds Coffee donates all of the hot dog buns. IGA donates the condiments.

Everything starts with a pot luck breakfast provided by the staff at the school. The events start at 9 AM and is usually over by 3 PM. If you have worked this event before

you know how much fun it is. If you have not, you are in for a treat.

To sign up contact Roy Pulliam at [email protected] or just show up. Roy Pulliam, Track Meet Chairman

Upcoming Lions Projects Next Friday's LEO Legend (the teenage Lions club we created) Charter Night event. Please consider helping with the: setup at 5:30, cooking and serving the dinner, and tear down. We will need a few volunteers to cook the Lasagna at home and bring to the event. Also, consider attending and supporting this new club. Cost is only $7.00. Email me back if you can help with any or all of the above. We will be cancelling our Friday meeting on May 3rd to work the International White Cane day. For new members, this is the day Lions all over the world hand out little white canes to show support in our effort to fight preventable blindness. We will need a lot of help with this one as we are working at several locations over a 2 hour shift at lunchtime on Friday. There are also Saturday opportunities to help. Contact Lion Carol Bisbee to sign up and for locations to work: [email protected] or call Carol at 360-573-4059 On Saturday, May 4th, we will be working the Diabetes Awareness Seminar at the Con-vention Center in Portland. Lion Craig Limoges is taking signups for morning and after-noon shifts. Contact Craig at [email protected] to help. Lion Ron Nielson will be running this event because Craig will be at his son's college graduation.

Twenty-one Lions and friends joined the "Cash Mob" at Billygan's Roadhouse Restau-rant on Monday, March 18th. Lion Roy Pulliam organ-ized the event to support the local establishment in Salmon Creek. The restaurant had been suffering due to an illness that was brought in by a customer and spread to 22 diners. It wasn't Billygan’s fault. Cash Mobs are events that support local busi-nesses all across the country. Monday's Cash Mob re-sulted in over 100 participating and the Columbian and News Channel 6 reporting on it.
