STAR Program hosts orientation sessionOn August 20, the STAR program kicked off the fall semester with a student and family orientation attended by nearly 100 people. One highlight of the orientation was the presentation of a $1,000 Scholarship for a former homeschool student who is new to STAR. This was funded and presented by Trustee Mary Hornbuckle, Vice President of the Coast Community Colleges Board of Trustees. The scholarship, awarded to Luc Ceci who is an incoming freshman majoring in Business, can be used to pay for tuition and books.

"Cohort 26," the new STAR group starting this fall, will include the majors of Business and Psychologyhoused up at the Garden Grove campus but alsointroduces the new Health Sciences cohort that willmeet at the Newport Beach campus. This expansionof the STAR program and it's support services to theNewport Beach campus is just one way that theSTAR and Title III grant is reaching across the college.

Right: Mary Hornbuckle, Vice President of theCoast Community College District Board ofTrustees, presents a $1,000 scholarship toLuc Ceci, a former home school student andnew Coastline STAR program student.

Status of Coastline IT leadershipWith the recent reorganization of IT across the District and the departure of AnthonyMaciel, a position of "User Support Manager" assigned to Coastline was created. TheDistrict is currently in the hiring process for this position. In the meantime Craig Oberlin,Sr. Director of User Support and Helpdesk is providing IT leadership to Coastline. Craigmostly recently was the Sr. Director of Information Technology at Orange Coast Collegeand has been with the District for 4.5 years. Craig is splitting his time between all 3colleges and the District Office, so for the most expedient service, please continue to usethe “Computer Services Request” form located on the “Faculty & Staff” page ofwww.coastline.edu.

"Computer refresh" a topic of discussionAt the moment, Craig Oberlin is forming a cross-functional, cross-site team to developand finalize (with the help of our committees and constituent groups) a set of district-widestandards for desktop, laptop, tablets, printers, copiers, and scanners. We hope tocomplete this process by the end of October. Coastline is set to be the first college toorder from these standards, beginning November 2013. In the meantime, IT will beidentifying existing equipment to be surplussed (largely from the old Coastline CostaMesa campus) to make room for receipt of the new equipment. Also, this helps to clearour storage area to accommodate the old computers as they are being swapped out fornew ones in November. If needed, additional staff will be deployed to Coastline to ensurethe success and timely completion of the computer refresh project. We will keep youupdated on this project as developments occur.
