WREH-WILSON The president of the Tubman College -Tubman University Alumni Association, Mr. Henry N. Thompson, has presented a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Elliot Wreh-Wilson, President of Tubman University. This is in recognition of his efforts in the placement of graduates at various entities, the construction of additional class- rooms and a graduation stand among others. Thompson said, “Today we are certificating you as a sign of our appreciation for all you continue to do for our university. The construction of an Engineering Annex with over ten large classrooms and several offices, the construction of a graduation stand, the placement of TU graduates at Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and other entities, the training of three TU graduates in Israel among others,” he said. He admonished members of the association to be true ambassadors by portraying positive image of the universi- ty wherever they find themselves. He also thanked the Government of Liberia, GIZ (German Technical Corporation) USAID Liberia, Partners In Health (PIH), Mary- landers for Progress (MFP) among others for their continuous support to the Univer- sity. TU-TC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CERTIFICATES DR. WREH-WILSON

The president of the Tubman College -Tubman University Alumni Association, Mr. Henry N. President Updates

The administration of Tubman Uni-versity in its last graduation ceremony awarded diplomas to 264 students who graduated with degrees in vari-ous disciplines from the six colleges across the University. The gradua-tion ceremony which was scheduled to be held in May 2020 was deferred to November 28, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Delivering the keynote address at the 7th com-mencement convocation, Rev. Dr. Lawrence K. Bropleh highlighted many achievements made by the gov-ernment of Liberia led by H.E.Dr. George M. of proper internet services, and the issue of salary harmoniza-tion among others. Also speaking, the Valedictori-an of the seventh graduating class, Mr. Emmanuel D. Mor-ris, of the College of Agricul-ture and Food Sciences said, “I am deeply honored to be the Valedictorian of this class, let me on behalf of my fellow grad-uates extend our deepest appre-ciation to the administration and the instructional staff, for their effort made during our study.”

The Country Representative of Africa Rice Center, Dr. Harold Roy-Macauley accompanied by the Deputy Agriculture Minister for Regional Development, Research and Extension, Dr. George Forpoh on Monday, January 28, paid a courtesy visit to the President of Tubman University, Dr. Elliott Wreh-Wilson. Speaking during the visit, Dr. Forpoh disclosed that the team was in the Southeast to meet stakeholders for an upcoming inte-grated rice and fish production project sponsored by the European Union (EU). He added that the project is a pilot project to be carried out in five counties including Maryland. He disclosed that the Ministry of Agriculture will shortly implement a Covid-19 stimulus package for farmers in the coun-ty in the aspect of land clearing. Minister Forpoh encouraged Tubman Uni-versity to take advantage of other opportunities including the upcoming Na-tional Agriculture Fare.

On his part, the Country Representative of Africa Rice Center thanked Dr. Wreh-Wilson and his team for the hard work thus far. Dr. Roy-Macauley expressed his desire to work with the University in creating employment for the youth through agricultural programs like the integrated rice and fish pro-ject. He disclosed that an assessment team is due to arrive soon.

Responding, Dr. Wreh-Wilson thanked the delegation for the visit and pledged the University’s support to the program. He pointed out that the University sees agriculture as a major boost to job creation and food security in the country. According to him, Tubman University is seeking partner-ships for its 500-acre farmland in Barrabo to help compliment the support of national government. He pointed out that fish and rice are part of the daily meals of the people of the region thereby making integrated fish and rice project a feasible one. He urged the Minister and team to ensure that the project becomes a reality.

RICE CENTER VISITS TUBMAN UNIVERSITY

The National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) has accredited Tubman University (TU) to offer masters degree in two academic disciplines. In a letter dated Sep-tember 1, 2020 and signed by Prof. David S. Dahn, Acting Director of NCHE, the commission specified that TU has been accredited to offer masters in Education Leadership and Hospital Administration respectively. “In keeping with recommendations from the department of Quality Assurance at the NCHE Secretariat regarding the assess-ment conducted on TU, it submits that TU has the basic capacities and potentials to commence delivery of the two programs applied for in Education Leadership and Health Administration,” the letter read. The letter reads further, “Until production of the required ‘Permit’ from NCHE Secretariat when sealed duly, accept the legitimacy of this correspondence to commence full operations of the pro-grams herein mentioned, and other academic activities on 1st October 2020.”

Reacting to this development, Prof. Elliott Wreh-Wilson, President of TU highlighted the importance of TU com-mencing the two graduate programs. He said the Universi-ty will attract massive partners and government support in employing additional qualified faculty members. He added that although there are already some professors in the rank and file of the university, there is a need for addition-al hands to further strengthen the graduate program when it kicks off. The graduate program is expected to begin at the start of Academic Year 2021-2022.

TU TO OFFER MASTERS DEGREES SOON

As the University begins a new semes-ter of academic activities, the President, Dr. Elliott Wreh-Wilson has called on all workers to start with renewed vigor to move the University forward. Speak-ing at the first general employees meet-ing on Thursday January 21, the Profes-sor Emeritus told employees that though TU is faced with some challeng-es, it is expected of everyone to their job with creativity and commitment. He thanked the employees for their diligent and sacrificial services during the past year and pledged his admin-istration’s commitments towards mak-ing the University a good place to be for all as the Center of quality and ex-cellence that it aspires.

Speaking also, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Mlen-Too Wes-ley assured the University that the fac-ulty are ready for work. He, however, called on faculty members to rise up to their duties and responsibilities. He reminded them that they are preparing the minds of people who will contrib-ute to the improvement of the region and world at large.

In an effort to enhance internal revenue generation at Tubman University (TU), the President, Dr. Elliott Wreh-Wilson, on Friday January 22 paid a working visit to the university farm in Barrabo district. Briefing the President on the status of the farm, the Manager Mr. Kartan Nugba said his team have planted 28 acres of pineapples, 32 acres of cocoa in addition to the 25 acres of rubber. He disclosed that they are working on strategies to increase the sizes of the cocoa and pineapple plantations with plans to include oil palm. He thanked the people of Barrabo for providing about 500 acres of land to TU and pledged his team’s commit-ment to ensuring that the land is fully utilized. Speaking on the workforce, the Manager said the farm cur-rently has seven Supervisors, 20 employees and 20 volunteers. He added that all the Supervisors including the Manager are graduates of Tubman University. Some of the constraints as stated by Mr. Nugba in the manage-ment of the farm include insufficient storage capacities, transportation for both products and employees and the destruction of the plants by insects.

Speaking during the tour of the farm, the President of TU thanked Mr. Nugba and his team for the hard work and sacrifices; he pledged his administration’s commitment towards making the farm the farm is fully functional. He pointed out that the farm is cardinal to his administration for both job creation, internal reve-nue generation and food security. He encouraged those working on the farm to be committed and diligent. He promised to engage the government and other stakeholders for the expansion of the farm.

A diversity park which was constructed by the graduated class of Academic Year 2019- 2020 of Tub-man University was on November 27, 2020 dedicated on the main campus of the University.

During the dedication ceremony, Mr. Anthony Kawbo, the president of the graduating class stated that the project was part of the class contribution to the University, as they believe the park will add to the aesthetics of the University campus. “If Tubman University must grow, graduates as well as stu-dents must contribute to its growth. The park being dedicated today is our way of helping to beautify our campus that we cherish so much”, he remarked.

For his part, Tubman University’s president, Dr. Elliott Wreh-Wilson praised the graduating class for the efforts made in beautifying the campus; he promised that the park will be maintained by the Uni-versity.

He indicated that the construction of the Diversity Park was a positive way of giving back to the Uni-versity as building the University requires the efforts of every individual, students, faculty members, staff and the host community.

Dr. Wreh-Wilson recounted several contributions made by past graduates but was quick to point out that the park symbolizes unity in diversity.

The park which is valued at USD $5,000, hosts the flags of all the 15 counties of Liberia. It symboliz-es the celebration of diversity and promotion of equal opportunities at TU.

Meanwhile, the Diversity Park dedication was attended by scores of officials including Dr. Francis Karteh, Tubman University Acting Board Chair and Chief Medical Officer of the Republic of Libe-ria, Assistant Minister of Education, Hon. Emmanuel Godwin who represented Minister of Educa-tion, students, and local government officials among others.
