Society Notice Board Editor’s Comments: At the end of a month where severe weather, snow, high winds and heavy rain disrupted services, mostly south of the border it was sad to get the first accident involving one of Virgin’s flagship ’Pendolinos’. Though it appears to be a failure of Network Rail maintenance, which could have had catastrophic effects, the strength of the ‘Pendolino’ design appears to have saved lives with only, sadly, one fatality. Interestingly whilst this incident received the normal hype by the media, the two ‘road’ deaths at level crossings, Dingwall and south of Norwich, received cursory attention…as usual. The latter one was a high speed incident but thankfully the train stayed on the track. Why is media / public sympathy always with the car drivers who for whatever reason broke the law, whereas little if any thought is given to the train drivers, who unable to do anything, know they have just killed someone. No-one condemns the motorist, whereas the level crossing design is seen as at fault. We must stop taking motoring offences lightly and the rail industry must fight its corner. Annual General Meeting: Please note the AGM is to held on SATURDAY 17TH MARCH 2007 at THE CREWE ARMS HOTEL, opposite the Station in The Disraeli Room at 12.00 noon. For those members planning to attend, who have not already done so, PLEASE notify the Secretary, Chairman or Membership Manager URGENTLY so that we know how many will be attending. Similarly please notify of any apologies for absence Magazine: Any information / article on any railway related item will always be most welcome for inclusion in part or as a whole in the magazine. Where in the…..? A light-hearted look around Britain at the current railway scene to see if you can spot the location. Last month’s location was the Southern station of St Leonards Warrior Square.

It wasn’t always narrow gauge

Railway Cuttings

Gordon Wharrie’s Railway Cuttings Rail passengers faced major delays after a landslide caused massive disruption when a Swindon to Cheltenham sprinter came of the track at 10.25pm near Kemble station on Monday the 15th January. Emergency services took nearly two hours to rescue 30 passengers but no-one was seriously injured. Network Rail engineers worked throughout the next day to clear the line and restore services. The cause of the landslide is being investigated. Cornwall Correspondent’s Railway Cuttings Camborne station is to receive a well-earned facelift over the next few months as works begin on a major refurbishment of the station building along with improved passenger facilities. The project is the result of a partnership led by Cornwall County Council along with FGW and Camborne Town Council and supported with further funding from the Railway Heritage Trust. Mr McTaggert of the county council’s planning executive has welcomed the refurbishment. When completed the station will have a brand new waiting room with improved disabled accessibility, new toilets including one which is wheelchair accessible, improved lighting, signage and seating. There will also be CCTV, cycle lockers and disabled parking.

Pendolino 390033 on Euston-Glasgow Central was derailed at 95mph near Grayrigg, Cumbria. Sadly one lady was killed and several seriously injured. The cause has been attributed to a poorly maintained set of facing points, not a good day for Network Rail. However the strength of the Pendolino design has been the saving grace in reducing the level of injuries.

390033 only 24 hrs beforehand Thursday 23 February 2007

Location ‘Spot’light by Trevor Roots

This new feature is intended as a guide to various popular spotting locations around the country and will include how to get there and what rolling stock you might see in a constantly changing railway scene. If anyone can provide similar details on other locations please let me know or if you want a particular location reviewed in future editions. Please also let me know if any details are wrong or you have updates. Contact [email protected] Our second featured location is:

CARLISLE Location: Carlisle still retains its status as a major junction being situated on the WCML 10 miles south of the England / Scotland border. In addition to the main WCML route from Scotland, the route from Kilmarnock / Dumfries joins just south of Gretna Green. To the south, three lines converge to join the WCML; the Cumbrian coast, the Settle & Carlisle and from Newcastle. Two miles north from the station are the main DRS depot and marshalling yards at Kingmoor ,which lie to the west of the WCML. Just south of the station and to the east of the WCML lies the former Upperby Depot now used for stabling odd items of rolling stock and track machines. Similarly, to the east of the Cumbrian coast line, lies Currock carriage and wagon works where again various items of rolling stock can be seen.

CARLISLE STATION Access: Rail: All Virgin West Coast & Cross Country stop, some terminate, at Carlisle so provide regular services throughout the day calling at platforms 1, 3 & 4. ScotRail operate approx. hourly from Dumfries, with some originating from further afield eg. Kilmarnock / Stranraer, terminating in bay platform 7. Four widely spaced services operate through to Newcastle. Northern operate the Cumbrian coast line with regular services to Whitehaven usually terminating in bay platform 2. A few services traverse the entire line, via Carnforth, connecting with WCML services at Lancaster. A trip on this service will pass Sellafield. Northern also operate regular services to Leeds via the Settle & Carlisle line and Newcastle terminating in bay platforms 5 & 6. Road: Carlisle is situated at the northern end of the A6, the old route north and the southern end of the A7. The A69 runs east across the Pennines and the A595 west to the Cumbrian coast. The M6 bypasses the town, access being from junctions 42 - A6, 43 - A69 & 44 -A7/A74(M). It is 10 miles south of the Scottish border at Gretna lying on the River Eden to the southeast of the Solway Firth. The station lies on a north-south axis in the centre of the town surrounded by a one-way system, which if you miss your turn can be confusing to rectify. Avoid busy times. The entrance is on the eastern side. Car parking is available at the station and there are various nearby public car parks. One to the north of the station, below the Cathedral, is alongside and to the east of the WCML line. Passenger Traffic: Services use three through platforms 1, 3 & 4 and four bay platforms, 2, 5, 6 & 7. WCML trains are Class 390 Virgin 'Pendolinos' and Class 220/221 Virgin ‘Voyagers’. With the exception of the Caledonian sleeper service, loco hauled trains are rare and only specials or charter services. Northern operate their various services with two car, Class 42 ‘Pacers’ Class 156 ‘Sprinters and single car Class 153s. At present these are in numerous liveries. ScotRail operate Class 156 ‘Sprinters in Strathclyde PTE carmine & cream and First liveries. HSTs can also be seen occasionally, particularly if as a result of an East Coast diversion.

Freight Traffic: Trains run through platforms 1, 3 and 4 in both directions. Between platforms 3 & 4 are two centre roads. Class 37, 47, 57, 60, 66, 86, 90 and 92 work through regularly everyday with Class 66 predominating from EWS, DRS & Freightliner. Other locos can be seen, mostly on an, 'as required' basis, but they run often enough to give you a chance of seeing something interesting. The types of freight hauled are coal, steel, tankers, aggregates, freightliners, intermodal and engineers. Light engine movements occur quite regularly and attention must be paid to DRS movements particularly at the north end of the station. Class 325 units are allocated to run the daily service for the 'Royal Mail'. The yellow HST track testing train runs to a regular diagram on certain days in the week. Though there can be big gaps between trains, like buses, several can arrive at once and all through lines occupied with freight. Over a good day an average of 4 or 5 trains an hour is usual. Because of the slow speed at which services operate through the station, Carlisle is a good place for wagon enthusiasts. Stabling: There are stabling sidings on the west of the station parallel to platform 1, regularly occupied by the resident Class 57/3 ‘Thunderbird’. Bay platform 8 can host a ScotRail Class 156. A siding also runs behind the wall east of platform 6, where a Northern Class 156 lays over between services. To the south and west are further sidings, which occasionally hold a Freightliner 66. The centre tracks between platforms 3 & 4 can also be used to either loop a freight service or temporarily stable locos.

Best Spotting / Photography Sites: The southern or northern end between platforms 1 & 3 is the favoured location. It is a reasonable place for photography as all passenger services stop / terminate and many freight trains stop in the platforms, awaiting signals or a crew change. Facilities: There are buffet facilities between platforms 1 & 3, platform 4 at head of bay platforms 5 & 6 and a small W H Smiths by the ticket office. With the town centre adjacent, numerous other shops are readily available.

DRS, KINGMOOR MPD Access: Rail: As the crow flies it is less than a mile north of Carlisle station on the west side of the WCML, after passing over the River Eden and under Etterby Road bridge. The quickest out and back service (64 mins or 41 mins Saturday) from Carlisle to pass Kingmoor depot and yard is the ScotRail 14.22 to Gretna Green (arr. 14.33) return 15.10 (arr.15.26) (14.52 (arr.15.03) Saturday) Road: If travelling from town centre (1 mile), follow one-way system for north / /A74(M)/A7. After large roundabout, pass over River Eden then after 300 yds take left filter lane into Etterby Street. After 600 yds turn left into Etterby Road prior to Redfern Inn, then turn right and park immediately in access lane to Balmoral Court. Walk back onto Etterby Road and right onto bridge to view south of depot. (careful as no footway, binoculars req) From M6 Junction 44, head south on A7 for two-thirds of a mile then turn right at traffic lights (opp Morrisons) into Briar Bank. At end of road turn left into Kingmoor Road then right into Etterby Road. From Kingmoor Yard ,see below. To view depot at closer quarters, continue down to Balmoral Court and park at entrance to Nature Reserve. Go through kissing gate and depot is in front of you. Follow ash path through reserve for 300 yds alongside line to gain further views. Winter is best, though mucky, as lineside vegetation is getting thicker.

DRS 20s, 37s, 66s & 86s (16 visible on depot in total) (with WCML to right) DRS Kingmoor MPD from Etterby Road bridge, 18 December 2006

Allocation: DRS has the following classes of locomotive, all of which can be seen on the depot in various numbers: 08, 20, 37, 47, 66 & 86 (recently moved) Facilities: There is a shop next to pub on Kingmoor Road.

KINGMOOR YARD Access: Rail: As with DRS depot. Road: From DRS depot, return to Etterby Road and turn left, which becomes Kingmoor Road. After ½ mile road bears left and over WCML via wide bridge. Park on wide footway and view yard over parapet (strong binoculars req.) For closer side on views, wagons permitting, continue across bridge to west side of yard and just before timber yard turn right into EWS entrance. Reception sidings to your right (east of yard) often hold locos on coal trains, particularly at weekends. Walk a few yards through open height barrier and onto rough bank in front of derelict buildings to view across yard. One EWS shunter is allocated to yard and can usually be seen from here. Be responsible, as access road is private and now entirely fenced right up to EWS signing on point. From north and A74(M) to avoid traffic on A7 (my route, ed.) leave A74(M), signposted Rockcliffe after crossing River Esk. Cross over A74(M) and over Floriston level-crossing (good spot for photos of freight leaving yard to south) Continue on and through Rockcliffe, taking right fork to Cargo / Carlisle. Continue past Cargo turn and various commercial yards and watch for EWS entrance on left just after timber yard (last premises).

or e-mail at: [email protected] TRAM NEWS: London: The future for London and other cities is LRT because congestion is now reaching unsustainable levels and road pricing is not the answer. More tram systems in London would improve traffic flow and could carry some 3000 passengers per hour and if we could link other tram systems, underground and BR stations. It would make the movement of people far easier and would reduce cars and pollution. We could even have freight trams as they do in some other European cities. Stourbridge: The experimental service of the PPM has now ended but it did show that the Parry People Mover is a safe, reliable form of transport. Midland Metro: Although many people would like trams to run into Birmingham City Centre there has been so many problems that government money may now be hard to get. Edinburgh: The growth and prosperity of the city is at risk if they do not get funding for their tram system. South Hampshire Rapid Transit: It now looks like they will end up with a guided busway, which is not what they wanted but all they could afford.

WAGON REVIEW 29t Vacuum-Braked BR General Merchandise Van – Vanfit VAA, VBA

The construction of the new air-braked general merchandise van began in 1969 when Ashford Works produced a new 29 ton van Diagram 1/248. The body was wood and steel and had full length doors, which made loading easy from platforms or with folk-lift trucks. They were initially coded COV and numbered in the ‘B’ series B787XXX but when TOPS was introduced, air-braked stock lost their ‘B’ prefix and the vans were renumbered 200000-200208 and re-coded VAA or VBA. The design codes were also changed to VA001C, VA001D and VB003Z. Some experimental vans were produced between 1969-1971 and further batches were built which brought the number range to 200324. Of the 325 vans built only 61 vehicles are still in revenue earning service.

Switzerland On the 13th February the 16:27 Geneve Airport to Brig, train 1737, was worked by BLS 465011, apparently this locomotive has been on this circuit for about a week now! Ae6/6 11401 "Ticino" has been saved by the Club San Gottardo in Mendrisio, near Chiasso, Switzerland. They are looking for sponsors to keep this historic locomotive fully operational, this is exceptionally good news for devotees of this wonderful class. A posting on a French forum shows a picture of 'oldies' Ae4/7 10950 and 11010 and says they have been certificated to run for Rail4Chem which will use them on tanker trains from Cornaux yard (Neuchatel). It's a bit early for an April fool, so is it true? If it is, it would be the most unusual traction development in Europe for a long time, 70 year old main line locos returning to commercial freight service after a decade of retirement!
