  • In the Evening By the Moonlight ................................................................. James BlandSung by the Men of the Chorale

In the evening by the moonlight you could hear the young folks singingIn the evening by the moonlight you could hear those banjos ringing; How the old folks would enjoy it, they would sit all night and listenAs we sang in the evening by the moonlight.

Scarborough Fair ................................................................................ English Folk SongConducted by Gloria Srikijkarn arr. by Anne-Marie HildebrandtSung by the Women of the Chorale

Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.Remember me to one who lives there; Once he was a true love of mine.

Tell him to weave me a cambric shirt, Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.Without no seam nor fine needlework, then he'll be a true love of mine.

Have him find me an acre of land, Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.Beneath the sea, and over the sand, then he'll be a true love of mine.

If he tells me he can't, I'll reply, Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.Let me know that at least he will try, then he'll be a true love of mine.

Love imposes impossible tasks, Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.Though not more than any heart asks, And I must know if he's a true love of mine.

Please join us in singing the following song.Mairzy Doats ...................................... Milton Drake, Al Hoffman, and Jerry Livingston

Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey, a kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you?Yes! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey, a kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you?

Stouthearted Men from The New Moon ..............................Music by Sigmund RombergSung by the Men of the Chorale Words by Oscar Hammerstein II arr. by Walter ScotsonYou who have dreams, if you act, they will come true Would you turn your dreams to a fact, it's up to youIf you have the soul and the spirit, never fear it, you'll see it through.Hearts can inspire other hearts with their fire. For the strong obey when a strong man shows them the way.

Give me some men who are stout-hearted men who will fight for the right they adore.Start me with ten who are stout-hearted men, and I'll soon give you ten thousand more.Oh, shoulder to shoulder, and bolder and bolder they grow as they go to the fore! Then there's nothing in the world can halt or mar a planWhen stouthearted men can stick together man to man.

Wood from Four Pastorales ......................................................... Music by Cecil EffingerOboe Soloist: Ian Wisekal Poem by Thomas Hornsby Ferril

There was a dark and awful wood where increments of death accruedTo ev'ry leaf and antlered head until it withered and was dead,And lonely there I wandered and wandered and wandered.

But once a myth white moon shone there and you were kneeling by a flow'r,And it was practical and wise for me to kneel and you to rise and turn to go,And you to turn and whisper no. And seven wondrous stags that I could not believe walked slowly by.

Polly-Wolly-Doodle .......................................................................................Gail KubikSoloists: Nancy Lauth, Leah Lucas, Mike Freeland Oh I went down South for to see my Sal, Sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day;My Sally am a spunky gal, Sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day.

Fare thee well, Fare thee well, Fare thee well my fairy fay,For I'm goin' to Lou'siana for to see my Susyanna, Sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day;Oh my Sal, she am a maiden fair, With curly eyes and laughing hair.

Oh a grasshopper sittin' on a railroad track, a-pickin' his teef wid a carpet tack.Oh I went to bed, but it wasn't no use, my feet stuck out for a chicken roost.

Please join us in singing the following song. How Much Is That Doggie In the Window? ..................................................Bob Merrill

How much is that doggie in the window? The one with the waggly tail. How much is that doggie in the window? I wonder if he is for sale?

How much is that doggie in the window? The one with the waggly tail. How much is that doggie in the window? I do hope that doggie's for sale?

  • Shenandoah/Deep River ....................... Based on an American Folk Song (Shenandoah) and a Traditional Spiritual (Deep River) arr. by Sonja Poorman and Berta PoormanOh Shenandoah, I long to hear you. Away, you rolling river.Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you. Away, I'm bound away 'cross the wide Missouri.

I long to walk your peaceful valley, hear the rolling of the river,And see the mountain laurel bloomin'. One day, not far away, I'll cross the wide Missouri.

Deep river, my home is over yonder.Deep river, Lord, I want to go back to my home and nevermore will I roam.

Oh roll, river roll, and soon I'll be home.

Battle Hymn of the Republic ..................................................... Music by William Steffe Words by Julia Ward Howe arr. by Jay AlthouseMine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored. He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword. His truth is marching on.

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps. They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps.I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps,His day is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me.As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free! While God is marching on.

Please join us in singing the following song. Are You Sleeping .......................................................Traditional French Nursery Rhyme

Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) ...................................................................... Billy Joel arr. by Mac HuffGoodnight, my angel, time to close your eyes, and save these questions for another day.I think I know what you've been asking me. I think you know what I've been trying to say.I promised I would never leave you, and you should always knowWherever you may go, no matter where you are, I never will be far away.

Goodnight, my angel, now it's time to sleep, and still so many things I want to say.Remember all the songs you sang for me when we went sailing on an em'rald bay.

  • And like a boat out on the ocean, I'm rocking you to sleep. The water's dark and deep, inside this ancient heart you'll always be a part of me.Goodnight, my angel, now it's time to dream, and dream how wonderful your life will be.Someday your child may cry, and if you sing this lullabye,Then in your heart there will always be a part of me.Someday we'll all be gone but lullabyes go on and on. They never die, that's how you and I will be.

Climb Ev’ry Mountain from The Sound of Music ................... Music by Richard Rodgers Words by Oscar Hammerstein II arr. by Ed Lojeski

Oread Farewell ...............................................................................Music by Dan Forrest Soloist: Renee Posey Words by Charles Anthony Silvestri

The time has come to say farewell; And though my heart be heavy,I promise still to remember ye E’en though we say, “Farewell.”

The flow’rs that bloom’d in Summer’s sun have lost their fleeting glory,And all but died in Winter’s chill; and we must say, “Farewell.”

So brief a time has come and gone since first we sang together; But bittersweet is that music now that we must say, “Farewell.”

Now we must part, and fare ye well in all that ye endeavor! And last, I pray--fondly think of me, whene’er you say, “Farewell.”

  • Program Notes

Welcome to “Songs Our Mothers (and Others) Taught Us". By far the majority of our pieces were chosen by Chorale members who had specific memories associated with them.

You might think that a program drawn from such disparate sources would have no unifying theme, but as I leafed through our selections one word came into my mind: “longing". I hit on this concept from the pieces themselves; you’ll get a whole extra layer of meaning as you hear their related stories. For now, though, here’s a tour through the varieties of that bittersweet emotion:

First, there’s a longing for lost childhood. Our first song, named for our program, expresses the feeling perfectly: Songs My Mother Taught Me, which contains the line “oft the tears are flowing . . . from my memory’s treasure.” Billy Joel’s Lullabye/Goodnight, My Angel, written when his seven-year-old daughter asked him, “Where do we go when we die?” also fits this mold. There will be a time when “we’ll all be gone.” But the love of a parent for a child goes on and on. I guess you could call it a case of retroactive longing.

Second, there’s a longing for love. The Cherrytones are singing Africa by the artist Toto, which expresses great anticipation for the arrival of his love on the “12:30 flight.” (Be sure to listen for the sound effects in this one!) Scarborough Fair describes how the speaker “must know if he’s a true love of mine,” by how willing he is to attempt several impossible tasks. Wood tells us about one magical moment when the loved one said “No” to keep the lover from going away. Shenandoah couldn’t be clearer about its emotion, as the very first line says, “Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you.” Not the river, mind you, but the daughter of an Indian chief. And may I say that Polly-Wolly-Doodle is a love song? I think it is!

Third, there’s a longing for the eternal and the ineffable. The aspirations expressed in The Impossible Dream and Climb Every Mountain speak to the deep desire of humankind to strive after what is, in the end, unattainable. Lord, Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace, with its beautiful words from the prayer of St. Francis, tells us of the longing to be part of God’s plan, to live selflessly. Even The Battle Hymn of the Republic with its militant, marching rhythms, contains a longing for justice and freedom.

I had to save a few words to talk specifically about our final selection, Oread Farewell by Dan Forrest. What a haunting piece, written on the occasion of Forrest’s departure from the University of Kansas at the end of his degree program there.

Artistic Director and Conductor, Brian Patrick Leatherman, is enjoying his 23rd year with CCC. During his tenure, the Chorale has doubled in size and greatly expanded its repertoire and collaborative activities. A retired music educator and very active choral conductor, he and Chorale accompanist Cindy Runkel have formed the Highlands Ranch Encore Chorale and the South Suburban Encore Chorale, non-auditioned daytime choirs for adults “55 and better,” providing a professionally run choral experience that highlights the social, physical,

and mental benefits of choral singing. Brian is an active choral clinician and adjudicator who has appeared as soloist with numerous choirs and orchestras including the Robert Shaw Festival Singers and the Robert Shaw Festival Chorus. Prior posts include directorship of the Pueblo Choral Society and the Douglas County Children’s Chorus.

The Chorale’s Associate Conductor, Greg Marsh, has been a choral director in Colorado and Arizona for more than 30 years. This is Greg's 22nd year with the Chorale. He holds a Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting from Arizona State University and is currently the vocal music teacher at Columbine High School. Mr. Marsh has frequently been a featured soloist for the Chorale, conducts portions of each Chorale performance and serves as the musical director for the Chorale Showcase Concert. Mr. Marsh is also a past conductor of

    the Colorado Mormon Chorale.

Cindy Runkel, now in her 9th season as Principal Accompanist, began musical training with her father while in kindergarten, then studied with Elizabeth Pastor, concert pianist and faculty member at The Cleveland Institute of Music. Ms. Runkel served as accompanist for her award-winning high school choral program and received multiple college scholarships, including a full piano scholarship to Miami University (OH), where she accompanied and

sang in multiple ensembles, performed in two European concert tours, and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree. Cindy and co-founder, Brian Leatherman, are celebrating Season #3 of their two 5280+ Encore Chorales, with 180+ "55 and better" singers!

Assistant Accompanist and Director of The CherryTones, Debbie Johnson grew up playing Beethoven & Chopin and singing Rodgers & Hammerstein! She has taught music and drama in both Denver and Tucson. Previously, she worked with two non-profits in India and founded/directed DenverWorks, an inner-city jobs program. We sang songs at our cabin my whole life, learning wonderful old songs. As Randy and I grew, we learned to play ukuleles and then guitars. We introduced Peter Paul and Mary, Judy Collins and the Beatles to the mix. Our children and now our grandchildren have carried on the music vocally and with piano. My parents can’t be here to enjoy this wonderful concert of music we grew up with (Climb Every Mountain and Impossible Dream being 2 of their favorites). My Dad died December of 2016 but my Mom just died on April 3rd, 2018. She was so looking forward to coming on May 12th. So, this is dedicated to the two of them. Thank you Mom and Dad. Love you. Barb and Ken Janusz

We have met at the dawn of our life and will live happily together until its sunset. I love you. Albert Zagray

This dedication is for all of the music lovers in our family who have gone on before! Our parents, cousins, aunts and uncles, who instilled in us our love of music. Fred and Kerry Cottingham

In memory of my dad (who passed away last July), a big band musician and my very first piano teacher; and in honor of my mom for taking me to dozens of piano lessons and always being my biggest cheerleader! Much love & gratitude, Cindy Runkel
