DIRECTOR’S NOTES“The test of an adventure is that when you’re in the middle of it,

you say to yourself, ‘Oh, now I’ve got myself into an awful mess;I wish I were sitting quietly at home.’ And the sign that something’s wrong

with you is when you sit quietly at home wishing you wereout having lots of adventure.”

— Thornton WilderThe concept of going “into the woods” speaks to the necessary journey into the unknown and complicated world that we all encounter. The experience of leaving “home,” the place where things are secure, stable, safe, and known, and traveling into the “woods,” can be scary. The Playhouse chose not to stay home in the familiar and safe. Instead, it chose to travel into the complicated and difficult world of Steven Sondheim and James Lapine. This musical includes some of the most intricate and challenging music in musical theater. And it presents each cast with an opportunity to push itself beyond what each individual might think possible.

A few short weeks ago, I asked a group of individuals to permit me to be their guide on a journey “Into the Woods”. I assured them that, if they trusted me, the journey would be exciting and fulfilling, and we would create a little magic for ourselves and our audiences. Little did I realize I would, in many circumstances, just be along for the ride. The talent, enthusiasm, commitment, and dedication brought to this performance by each character has been outstanding and far surpassed anything I could anticipate or hope for when originally casting this show. This cast, these rehearsals, and these performances have created an experience none of us will soon forget. I thank each and every person associated with this production for my journey.

On behalf of the cast and staff of “Into The Woods”, it is our “wish” that youenjoy your journey with us tonight. — Lee, Director and Tour Guide
