PABLO CASALS O Vos OmnesBorn in 1876; Died in 1973

“O Vos Omnes” is adapted from theLatin Vulgate translation of Lamenta-tions 1:12. It was originally sung aspart of Holy Week services in the

Roman Catholic liturgy, and was oftenset, especially in the 16th century, aspart of the Tenebrae Responsories. Inmodern times the text is often sung as a

motet. Casals’ treatment utilizes darkcoloration through thick textures in theinitial TTBB exposition and throughoutas alto, then soprano voices are added.

Casals also uses pauses for the audi-ence’s contemplation of the Lamenta-tion author’s “sorrow” at the ends oftext phrases.

WILLIAM BYRD Haec DiesBorn in 1540; Died in 1623

“Haec Dies” is an antiphon text asso-ciated with Easter Sunday. Byrd’s set-ting is a delightful six-part treatment

that projects a joyful and energeticspirit in the interweaving of themelodic lines.

DAN FORREST Psalm 8: Adonai, AdonenuBorn in 1978

Dan Forrest’s setting of Psalm 8begins with the ethereal sound ofpianissimo expressions of awe in thevoices and harmonics in the violin.

The piece develops into sweepingphrases with massive crescendosbefore settling back into an attitude ofprayer at the conclusion.

ANDRÉ THOMAS GloriaBorn in 1952

André Thomas’ “Gloria” is a gospel-stylesetting of the text from the Ordinary of

the Mass. Thomas utilizes movement andclapping as well as vocal idioms like slides.

JOHN PHILIP SOUSA Fairest of the FairBorn in 1854; Died in 1932

John Philip Sousa, the American MarchKing, composed prolifically at the turnof the 20th century. His influence inmusic made a lasting impact on the futureof American marching and concert bands,

as well as bands around the world.Fairest of the Fair was inspired by thememory of a beautiful girl he met at afair. Its melodic content makes this Marchone of his finest.

PIERRE LA PLANTE A Walk in the Morning SunBorn in 1943

The composer writes, “While growingup in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, in the1950s, some of the first orchestralmusic I heard was written by LeroyAnderson. Although Leroy Anderson

had been composing since the 1930s,this was the first time when he wasexperiencing his greatest commercialsuccess, and his orchestral miniatureswere a staple on WDOR.” He states,

“A Walk in the Morning Sun is a ‘tipof the hat’ to Leroy Anderson’s

unique style and contribution to Amer -ican Music.”

GUSTAV HOLST Second Suite in F for Military Band, Op. 28,No. 2 (Mov. I, II, & IV)Born in 1874; Died in 1934

Gustav Holst may be best known forhis orchestral work The Planets, but healso made an indelible impact in theworld of concert band music. Holst’sSecond Suite was composed two yearsafter his Suite No. 1 for Wind Band. Both works may very well be pointedout as some of the earliest wind ensem-ble literature to gain respect as signifi-cant. His experience playing tromboneis quite evident in his writing of thiswork, which often uses the low brass asa vehicle for melodic content. Ironicallythough completed in 1911, it was notpremiered until 1922, due to distractionby other projects he was working on.

In his Second Suite, Holst used sevenHampshire folk songs as the founda-tion of the piece. The first movement,March, features the Euphonium playingthe folk song “Swansea Town.” In the

second half of the movement the wood-winds begin a light 6/8 section thatleads to a reprise of the first half in itsentirety. Song without Words, the sec-ond movement of the Suite, uses thefolk song “I’ll Love my Love” as its the-matic material. The movement beginswith a clarinet solo that develops into afull band sound, before descendingthrough the woodwinds into the tenorbrass, and its final descent into a solotuba. In the final movement, Fantasy onthe Dargason, Holst uses the instrumen-tation of the wind band to its fullestpotential with nearly every section fea-tured at some point. Beginning with asolo saxophone, the work uses thefamiliar tune of “Greensleeves” in themiddle as its main theme. After fullydeveloping the movement, Holst reducesthe instrumentation to an unlikely duetbetween the piccolo and the tuba.

ROSSANO GALANTE A Childhood RememberedBorn in 1967

Rossano Gallante is best known for hiswork as a film composer, but morerecently has also composed a number ofworks for concert band. Rossano writes,“This light, lyrical composition cap-tures youth and innocence through theeyes of a child. Playful melodic lines

interspersed with more lyrical, lushsonorities will take audiences back tothat simple time of their childhood.” AChildhood Remembered was commis-sioned by, and dedicated to, the HofstraUniversity Symphonic Band, Dr. PeterBoonshaft, director.

WILLIAM FRANCIS MCBETH Canto, Op. 61Born in 1933; Died in 2012

One of the most influential composers ofthe 20th century, William Francis McBethwas best known for his “pyramid ofsound” concept, which is consistentlydemonstrated throughout his works. InCanto, McBeth used a number of unique

devices such as clapping and “pitchedblocks of wood” to make the piece comealive. McBeth uses the folk song melody“Sakura” as a foundation throughout thispiece. Tonight’s performance is conductedby assistant director, Nathan Williams.

RANDALL D. STANDRIDGE ImaginariumBorn in 1976

The composer writes, “Inside everyperson, there is a place where creativ-ity dwells. Gears turn, dreams flow, and ideas spark into life. This idea-factoryor ‘Imaginarium’ is the place that everycreative person goes to, again andagain, to find their muse, flesh outideas, and to exert change on theworld around them. This piece is ded-icated to all of the dreamers who seemore in the world than is actuallythere, who see possibilities where oth-ers see only dead ends, and whobelieve in creation rather than destruc-tion. This one’s for you.”

Imaginarium was commissioned by theAssociation of Texas Small School Bandsfor our All-State Concert Band in 2015.It is comprised of four sections: “Sparks,”where ideas begin to germinate; “TheCloud Factory,” which represents the daydreamy zone where one imagines endlesspossibilities (with my best nod Eric Satieas well); “Here, There be Monsters…” isthat moment of panic or nightmare thatall creative people feel when self-doubtsets in and the task seems too monumen-tal to overcome; a brief recapitulation to“Sparks” before “Eureka!”—the idea isfully realized!

NIKOLAI RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Russian Easter Festival OvertureBorn in 1844; Died in 1908

Rimsky-Korsakov dedicated this pieceto Modest Mussorgsky and AlexanderBorodin, two composers who, withRimsky-Korsakov, Mily Balakirev, andCésar Cui, made up “The Five,” a groupof Russian composers dedicated toestablishing a distinct Russian stylewithin the traditions of Western classi-cal music. Through Rimsky-Korsakov’s

use of melodies from the Obikhod, acollection of chants from the RussianOrthodox liturgy, the Russian flavor ofthis work is prominent, with Rimsky-Korsakov describing it in his memoirs:“…[reminiscent] of the ancient prophecy,of the gospel narrative, and also a gen-eral picture of the Easter service with itspagan merrymaking.”

LEONARD BERNSTEIN Overture to CandideBorn in 1918; Died in 1990

Based on Voltaire’s 1758 novella Candide:or, All for the Best, Berstein’s operettaCandide opened to mixed reviews andclosed shortly thereafter. Voltaire’s satiri-cal novella unabashedly explored theexcesses of the Catholic Church’s Inqui-sition, and Lillian Hellman’s librettowas seen as a thinly masked attack onthe House Un-American Activities

Committee. While the original overturewas composed for a smaller ensemble, thelater scoring performed here for fullorchestra has become one of Berstein’smost well-known and often performedpieces. Weaving together melodies fromthroughout the operetta with musicaljokes, this overture has become a favoritenot only to hear, but to perform, as well.

JOHN WILLIAMS The Cowboys OvertureBorn in 1932

There are few orchestras as iconicallyAmerican as the Boston Pops Orches-tra, and when John Williams succeededArthur Fiedler as its principal conduc-tor in 1980, he wanted to open his firstconcert with an original piece. Williamshad composed a score for the 1972John Wayne film The Cowboys, which

painted a picture of the trials andadventures of a ragtag group of youthunder the tutelage of Wayne’s characteron a 400-mile cattle drive. Taking themelodies from that score, Williams con-structed a traditional orchestra over-ture that began his lasting associationwith Boston Pops.
