Special Event:
AN EVENING WITH WINSTON MOORE Thursday, January 9, 2020
Winston H. Moore moved to Boise, Idaho with his wife, Diane, in 1957 because of the
prolific pheasant population—ducks too. Winston was an exceptional outdoorsman and
started a wholesale sporting goods firm based on his expertise. Within a short period of
time his business flourished and afforded him the opportunity to travel to exotic saltwater
destinations to fly fish for bonefish, tarpon, sailfish, and permit. As a pioneer of fly fishing
for bonefish, sailfish, and permit he figured out how to fish by observation and trial and
error.
Most of the time, Winston had to develop his own fly
patterns. There really were no books or articles nor people
fly fishing in saltwater. He has many great stories of some of
his incredible experiences including fly fishing for trout,
salmon, and steelhead.
Winston Moore has caught on a fly rod 112 permit,
over 7,000 bonefish, 138 sailfish, and more than 600
tarpons! Most likely he released a world record 50#
permit and 200# tarpon taken on a fly.
Mr. Moore is a most successful businessman and has
made an impact to countless people with his
philanthropy. At 95, Winston is an active commercial
real estate developer and his good friend, Buddy, goes
to the office with him every day.

Welcome to the
WESTERN IDAHO FLY FISHING EXPO 2020
The Boise Valley Fly Fishers are pleased to announce the 16th Annual Western Idaho Fly
Fishing Expo on Friday and Saturday, January 10th-11th, 2020. We continue our traditional
two-day event at Expo Idaho in Boise, with two indoor casting ponds and a dynamic group
of speakers, demonstrations, and exhibits.
ENTRY FEE: $10 for Adults, 13 and under Free
CASH ONLY AT THE DOOR
The Boise Valley Fly Fishers is the oldest fly-fishing organization in Idaho, chartered in
1971. Our mission to promote the sport of fly-fishing through education, conservation,
and public access activities is dependent upon a successful Expo. Instruction in fly tying,
casting, and fly-fishing ethics has been our strength over the years.
Our organization has used funds raised at the Expo to support conservation and
philanthropic projects throughout the Northwest. We have partnered with Trout
Unlimited, Idaho Fish and Game, Boise Park & Recreation, and the Bureau of Reclamation
to complete several projects. BVFF for the past several years has supported the important
work carried out by Casting for Recovery, and
Idaho 2 Fly, through annual donations.
This year we highlight BVFF’s partnership with
the Oregon Department of Fish & Game,
establishing educational signs along the Lower
Owyhee River for protecting brown trout
redds. This sensitive fishery is a very popular
destination with Boise valley anglers, and we
are proud to help support this ODFW project.
We would also like to thank Silver Creek Supply for the 4th year of support with our
indoor casting ponds, and BVFF.

EXPO 2020 LOGO
This year’s logo fly pattern, the Brown Drake
(Ephemera Danica) is contributed by local
fly tyer Ken Held.
“I started fishing over 50 years ago in Japan,
where my dad was stationed in the Air
Force, using a Tenkara rod to catch my first
trout.
My fly-fishing journey started over 40 years
ago when I was given a 7wt Eagle Claw rod
and reel by a neighbor. One of my Christmas presents that year was a fly-tying kit and
the rest is history. I started with tying the standard flies Adams, Joe’s hopper, Royal
coachman and many others for the time. I went to a fly-tying class at the Mountain Air
Force base arts and crafts center every Thursday for 2 hours and learned the art taught
by Marv Taylor. I looked forward to Sundays as Marv wrote for the Idaho Statesman
newspaper and had a new fly pattern every week, but only after dad had read the sports
section, was I allowed to see it. Since then I have tried to be as innovative with my tying
as I can with new materials making my flies durable and as realistic as I can. I started tying
at the BVFF Fly Fishing EXPO in 2010 passing my knowledge and techniques to other tyers
and learning from other tyers. In 2013 I was contacted by Rick Takahashi to have some of
my flies published in his new book Modern Terrestrials. The book was released in
September 2014. As a kid on Christmas day sitting at my first vise, I would never have
thought that one day flies that I tied would be seen by so many in that famous book.
In 2017, I became part of the Frosty Fly Pro Staff using their products to create realistic
flies like the one on this year’s BVFF pin and patch and stickers. I am a Project Healing
Waters volunteer, passing my knowledge and skills onto our veterans in the program. So,
my journey continues just like any fishing adventure, wanting to see what is around the
next bend in the river.

FIRST TIME FLY TYER Have you ever wanted to tie a fly? Would you
like to try? The First-Time Tyer program is
designed for all ages to tie their first fly -- we
have material and instructors ready to help
you. The Woolly Bugger is a proven pattern.
Tie the fly today and use it on the water to
catch a fish!
The First Time Fly Tyer Booth is hosted by The
Woolly Buggers, a youth program of the Ted Trueblood Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
The Woolly Buggers (and adult volunteers, the Rusty Spinners) will be on hand to teach
new tyers, young and old alike, how to tie a woolly bugger fly. In addition to the namesake
fly of the club, the woolly bugger is fun to tie and is a workhorse fly that can be used in
almost any condition!
The Woolly Buggers meet:
2nd Tuesday of each month (with a few exceptions)
6:00 PM
Trophy Room
Idaho Fish & Game
Walnut Street, Boise

12:30 PM Casting in the Wind and the Double Haul
Jeff Currier
Jeff has been teaching fly casting for more than 25 years. He’s also won several “Best of the West” casting competitions including one with a winning distance cast of 114 feet with a 9 foot 5-weight rod! What this means is Jeff can certainly double haul and wind is never a hindrance.
In “Casting in the Wind & the Double Haul” Jeff emphasizes that the wind should be your friend. Jeff begins by demonstrating some of the simple tricks for dealing with wind such as over the shoulder casts, the Belgian cast, aggressive sidearm pick-ups and even casting with your opposite hand. Then he teaches the essential double haul.
Whether those who don’t double haul want to admit it or not, the double haul is the most important casting tool next to casting itself. If you haven’t learned it, Jeff will prove that you can. The show is entertaining, involves the crowd, and can be designed to fit your needed time frame.

This excellent seminar starts basic with a run down on the rod, reel and line. Why a 5-weight? Why is a fly line so expensive? He’ll show you how to set up then teach you how to get started in the backyard. He’ll explain how to make that first cast all the way through to Roll Casting and a few tricks for dealing with wind.

Born to Be Wild: How Science Can Inform Recovery of Idaho Salmon and Steelhead
Russ Thurow and Rick Williams
Historically, the Columbia River basin (including the Snake and Salmon Rivers) was the most productive Chinook salmon habitat in the world. By 1995, fewer than 1,200 wild Chinook salmon returned and today all Snake River populations are at risk of extirpation and federally listed under the Endangered Species Act. Federal Agencies consider the “four H’s” (harvest, habitat degradation, hatchery practices, and hydro) the primary causes of salmon declines.
Rick will describe the history, status, and trends of salmon and steelhead populations in the Columbia and Snake River basins. He will discuss the scientific foundation supporting an ecologically based salmon and steelhead recovery effort.
Russ will focus on Chinook salmon populations within the Middle Fork Salmon River basin (MFSR) in Central Idaho. He will describe results of long-term scientific research to advance knowledge of the landscape and local biophysical conditions and processes that influence salmon habitat, and the distribution, diversity, persistence, and recovery of salmon. MFSR research results illustrate that essential building blocks for recovery persist in the MFSR, however, recovery is limited by outside-basin factors. These data may be applied to inform effective salmon recovery strategies.
Russ Thurow is a Fisheries Research Scientist with the USFS- Rocky Mountain Research Station in Boise, Idaho. For 35 years, his research has focused on understanding ecosystem function and aquatic species responses and on development of conservation and restoration strategies. Russ is very familiar with Central Idaho’s Middle Fork Salmon River basin and the ecology of its wild Chinook salmon and steelhead.
Dr. Rick Williams is a Research Associate in the Department of Biology at The College of Idaho and lives in Eagle, Idaho. His research and writing having focused on the conservation of native trout and salmon for more than 30 years. Rick has worked on Columbia River salmon recovery issues since the 1980s and served on the scientific review panels including the SRG, ISG ISRP, and ISAB. In 2006 he edited “Return to the River: Restoring Salmon to the Columbia River”. Rick serves as a Senior Conservation Advisor for Fly Fishers International.
