Purpose & Aims

The purpose of this research was to allow me further information on my target audience, which I will then use to create a music magazine they will find interesting.

Methods & Techniques

I conducted my research using the self report technique of a questionnaire, this would provide me with primary, quantitative data. In the questionnaire I asked several questions which allowed me to find out their age, gender, town of residence, hobbies & interests and things they typically look for in a magazine (such as price, gifts and features) From this questionnaire I then formed a focus group of students who I predicted would fall intop my target audience. The results found were then collated into graphs and then placed in this presentation.

Gender & AgeFrom my sample of five students, all of them were male and between the ages of 16 and 18. This is

because my magazine is primarily targeted at males of this age and therefore I was able to

choose a suitable focus group.

OCCUPATIONAL STATUS

From the five participants I questioned, I found that all five were students, however one of them had a part time job. This would suggest they will be able to pay

more for my magazine.

TOWN OF RESIDENCE

This graph shows that from the five people I interviewed four of them were from Harlow while only one was from London.

This shows the areas in which I should sell my magazine, and that it should be primarily in the Harlow area.

Relationship StatusThis graph shows that from the five people I

interviewed four of them fell under the category of “Single” while one fell under “In a relationship”This suggests that the majority of my magazines readers will be able to spend more on my magazine as they

only have themselves to buy for.

Hobbies & InterestsFor this question I asked my focus group to tell me

which of these Hobbies/Interests they enjoyed. From the results it is apparent that the majority are

into both Gaming and Music, this suggests that adverts included in my magazine should be focused

more on these areas.

Magazine preferencesFor this question I asked the focus group “If given the

choice of these magazines, which would you pick?” The graph shows that the majority of my target audience were

interested in the two Rock-based magazines NME & Kerrang, as my magazine is also based around this genre this is a good result. I also know which magazines I should be using for textual analysis, in order to make it in a similar

style.

price rangeHere I asked the focus group “Would you be willing to

pay £4.49 for a monthly magazine?” As the graph shows the majority of my target audience said no, with the one who said yes being the part-time worker. For this reason It would be advisable for me to lower my asking price as

not to deter the majority of my target audience.

place of purchaseHere I asked the focus group where they are likely to buy a music magazine from and gave the four choices seen above. There is a tie in the results

between HMV and WHSmith, this suggests I should sell copies in both of these shops.

free giftsFor this question I asked the group what kind of free gifts they would expect to get from a music magazine, if any. The results were varied with

answers including; Posters, CD’s and Merchandise including badges and key-rings.

Colour schemeFor this data I asked the focus group which colour

scheme they thought would go best with a rock music magazine, as the graph shows, the majority chose

White & Black with one choosing Red & Black. For this reason I shall include all of these colours, however using primarily White & Black with Red used in small amounts.

artists & bandsHere I asked the group which bands or artists they would

be interested in seeing in a rock music magazine, the feedback was varied, however the style of music was

similar. Answers included; Maximo Park, Arctic Monkeys, Reverand & the Makers, Kids in Glass Houses, Tenacious D

and Linkin Park. These results allow me to find similar artists and bands to use in my magazine.

magazine featuresFor my final question I asked the focus group “What main feature would you like yo see on a double-page

spread?” I then gave them the options listed above and asked them to tick one. The two highest results were

Interview and Album Review, this suggests that for my double-page spread I should devote a page to each

with a possible History of band/artist if there is room.

proposalFrom my research I was able to find out much more information on my target audience. From this information I aim to change my magazine in order for it to appeal all members of my target audience, and not to exclude any. For example, my price should not be too high as it will exclude the unemployed members of my target audience, for this reason I will lower it from the original £4.49 and reduce it to a more reasonable £3.99. I also aim to take on board the feedback given on the type of articles I should use in my magazine and the colour scheme I should use. This will mean my magazine will directly appeal to my target audience as it was designed by them.
