“Community Engagement in Global Health Research: UnsettlingImplications of Taking it Seriously”

ABOUT THIS SERIESThe Howard A. Schneiderman Memorial Bioethics Lecture Series began in 1990with a generous endowment from Dr. Schneiderman, the third dean of theSchool of Biological Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. This seriesbrings outstanding faculty to UC Irvine each year to speak about importantsocial and ethical implications of advances in biology and medicine. The lecturesare open to faculty and students and to members of the community at large.

LECTURE ABSTRACTThe testing and introduction of new health technologies in the developingworld raise a daunting range of ethical, social and cultural challenges, includingwhat it means for host communities to genuinely authorize the necessary trials. In this lecture, Dr. Jim Lavery explores the implications of taking thesechallenges seriously and suggests that doing so might require a significant re-thinking of the principles underlying contemporary research ethics.

Reception to follow lecture Event and parking are free
