WHY THIS TOPIC?• Because someone said to me, “How do
you make a presentation?”

SO, LET ME SHARE SOME BACKGROUND!!!
MAKING A PRESENTATION!• Doug – that’s easy for you.• You are an expert!
– Well, what about 1978?• A Lowly GS-4. Brand new! Different Career Field.
– What about 1984?• Brand New Instructor, two weeks to prep a class I had never taught!
– What about 1995?• Selected for the FAR rewrite and had to brief the “BIG” People in DC.
– What about 2000?• Move from one University to another and having to prove myself to
leadership all over again.– What about 2007?
• Having to tell the whole Property and Contract Community what the new rules said -- AND MEANT (Along with John and Chuck)

– Ain’t no literature – You have no supporting evidence!
EXAMPLE: I once choose to analyze the F-20 Tigershark program for Doctoral program.Good idea – huh?BAD IDEA – no literature to support ANYTHING I said!!!

TECHNICAL ISSUES• KNOW YOUR MATERIAL
• DO NOT JUST READ THE SLIDES– TALK TO THE TOPIC OF THE SLIDE– YOUR SLIDES ARE YOUR TRIGGER – and
the Audience’s trigger – regarding the POINT OF THE SLIDE
• EXCEPTION – SOME TECHNICAL ISSUES HAVE TO BE READ/DISSECTED VERBATIM
TECHNICAL ISSUES• My Weakness…
VISUALS!!!• Failure to use pictures,
photos, illustrations leave out a whole group of learners who need visual stimulation to learn!
TECHNICAL ISSUES• ANIMATIONS
– The Literature says to use animations but not to OVERLOAD your presentation with animations• NOTE – I HATE ANIMATIONS!!!• But I do use them in very specific
situations– My other presentation here at NES– Used to reveal a Question– But reserve the answer on the slide
TECHNICAL ISSUES• SOUND/VIDEO
– Yes, again, you can use SOUND, MUSIC in judicious amounts
– But the technical issue is to make it work!!!• Is there a “System” that your computer can play
the sound through, i.e., overhead speakers• Is there a microphone that you could place near
your computer speakers.– AND… Make sure that your computer won’t
crash with the music playing• OPTICAL RECOGNITION – Minority Report
TECHNICAL ISSUES• HOW DO I GET FROM ONE SLIDE TO
ANOTHER– MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT
EQUIPMENT!!!• INVEST a FEW DOLLARS!• BUY NEW BATTERIES ALSO!
– Can’t tell you how many times the clicker dies!
• Worse comes to worse– “Next slide” “Next Slide” “Next Slide”
• You get the idea!
TECHNICAL ISSUES• AND ALL OF YOUR EQUIPMENT
CRASHES!!! (Last year – me at the NES. WINDOWS 10 WANTED TO UPDATE!)
• KEEP GOING!• Know your material so well that you do
not NEED to presentation – TALK to/through the topic

– Do a Presentation at an NES.
