Non-Conventional

An unconventional machining process

(or non-traditional machining process) is

a special type of machining process in

which there is no direct contact between

the tool and the work piece.

In unconventional machining, a form of

energy is used to remove unwanted

material from a given work piece

Electrochemical Machining

Processes: ECM removes material at the anode

(work piece) using current controlled

electrochemical process. By feeding a

shaped cathode (tool or electrode)

towards the work piece, the reverse

shape of the tool is copied to the work

piece.

Electrochemical Machining

Processes:1. Electrochemical machining (ECM)

2. Electrochemical debarring (ECD)

3. Electrochemical grinding (ECG)

Electrochemical debarring (ECD)

In Electrochemical Deburring (ECD),

burrs are dissolved from metallic

workpieces electrochemically and are

flushed away by pressurized electrolyte.

Electrochemical grinding (ECG)

ECG that combines electrolytic activity

with the physical removal of material by

means of charged grinding wheels.

Advantages

No mechanical force

There is no cutting forces therefore

clamping is not required except for

controlled motion of the work piece.

There is no heat affected zone.

Very accurate.

Relatively fast

Page 12: PresentationElectrochemical Machining Processes

Economics

The process is economical when a

large number of complex identical

products need to be made

Several tools could be connected to a

cassette to make many cavities

simultaneously.
