My inspiration

I took this Kerrang magazine contents page as inspiration for my real life magazine as it’s very colorful and clear and this is how I wanted my content page to look to attract the audience of young people. This contents page uses headings to separate the page numbers into different sections, this makes it easier for a audience member to read and help them navigate themselves though the magazine better.

My contents page

This is my finished contents page. I tired to follow the conventions of a real life magazine when creating this and I done this by looking closing at the contents page I took for inspiration. The next slides will go more into depth about how I followed these conventions.

Page 4: Presentation1

Masthead and titles:Hear is the main title of the contents page. The title is very simplistic like ones I have seen in real media texts so it follows the conventions of a real life magazine. The text I used for it was similar to the text I used for the rest of my magazine, which was a very harsh font, allowing the title to follow the theme running throughout the magazine. I also stuck to the conventions of a real life magazine with the title as like in my inspiration the title is placed at the top left of my magazine.

I have also added the masthead of my magazine on the right hand side of my contents page as this follows the conventions of a real life magazine. I have also added the dateline and an image of the magazine front cover, to make this look more professional and highlight the key information of the magazine.

I also added sub-titles to help set out the page information of my magazine. This is one of the typical conventions of a real life music magazine. I presented these sub-titles with classic names such as ‘every month’ and ‘features’ and put them in a larger font and in read boxes to make it stand out. I got the idea to put these in boxes from my inspirational content page, and felt this would also work perfectly with the design of my magazine.

Images One of the images on my content page is the image of a Protools desk. This is the enhance the knowledge that this magazine is about modern day music. This image follows the conventions of a real life magazine as I have seen images of software instruments in rock sound however it still challenges traditions as you would more likely see an image of a bass guitar of drum kit. The image has the page number the story about it will be one clearly presented in bold text at the bottom of the picture. I feel using this image in my magazine will help draw in more musically advanced people to my magazine as

potential audiences. The main image for my magazine content page features the two models who will be on the double page spread of my magazine. This idea was also done in the magazine I took for inspiration and many other magazines of the rock genre, therefore it clearly follows the conventions. I presented the page number of this magazine in a white box to make it stand out clearly to the audience. Also I added a copy of the double page spread next to it so the audience members clearly see these models are also featured in the main story of the magazine. One adventurous thing I done with this image was edit the background to a shattered glass background. This linked nicely with my front cover background however it challenges the conventions as I have never seen this done in a real life music magazine at all, making it a new an original idea. The other images I used for my magazine’s content page where presented as a

number of images where also seen on my inspirational music magazine. Both of these images follow the conventions of a real life magazine as neither of the models are smiling and this is typical for a magazine of this genre. I also again added the page numbers these where linked to in bold text at the corners of the pictures. Both of these pictures where taking in a green room but I edited out the green background to make it look more professional. Also the extra images where of each gender showing the audience that magazine has stories that will appeal to girls as well as boys.

Page navigators

Like a real life magazine I wanted my magazine to have page navigator's that link the stories in the magazine to over 100 pages. I split the main stories into sections such as: every month and features. However I also filed up the empty space on my magazine with more page navigators as this was also done of the contents page I took for inspiration. I kept my navigators clear with a continuous colour code pattern with red displaying the page number and black displaying the page title. I picked these two colours as they contrast well together and are both on the colour scheme I wanted for my magazine. The one page that doesn’t follow this is the deals of the week that is highlighted in purple, this is because this is a promotional page so I wanted it to stand out as much as possible.

Page 7: Presentation1

Other features:Another feature I added was the subtitle before the page navigators saying ‘poison this week’ I added this to my magazine in the same font as my masthead as I have seen this in many real life media texts and it makes the contents page easier to read as well as following the conventions of a real life text.

To follow the conventions of a real contents page further I added my editors note at the bottom right of my magazine. I presented with a picture of the editor next to it as I saw this in my inspirational magazine. I also followed the conventions of the magazine I took for inspiration by writing the editors note in a smaller and more traditional font. This is so It doesn’t jump out at the reader as much as the other text as the information in this not isn’t key and is read more for personal interest.
