Before class:

1. Consider how you will teach the activity over thecourse of a couple days. The suggested time for thisResponse Group activity is 120 minutes.

2. Before beginning Phase 1 of the activity, print a copy ofHandout A: Enlightenment Thinker Cards and cut thecards apart. Also make two copies of the five pageHandout B: Head of Enlightenment Thinker. Tape oneset of heads across one wall of the classroom. Postthe other set on the opposite wall.

Slide 16Although Isaac Newton is often characterizedas a mathematician and scientist, he wasknown as a philosopher during his time. Hisviews that nature was understandable,predictable, and bound by natural laws were sosignificant that many of the great philosophersof the 18th century, including John Locke andVoltaire, sought to interpret his ideas. Heestablished a method that others used toaddress issues and questions.
