Unsticking the Middle

Introduction

-  Our pathway is Cultural / Industrial. -  Reason why we chose this :

-  St Blazey’s rich history. -  Discussions with the locals. Found something

environmental would be a waste of time & money.

Our Idea

A digital experience of the past, present and future of St Blazey. We hope this experience includes people of every demographic. This experience hopes to keep an ongoing interest in the history and the future of the area.

RFID -The RFID tags would be embedded in objects relevant to St Blazey. - The user buys the collectable item from local information spots. - These activate the installation with each one triggering different responses."- Each RFID (item) provides the user with a different experience of the installation. - Because these items are relevant to the area, the tourist/user would take home the item and continue the legacy.

1st Space -  The Past. -  This space will be a Soundscape. -  This room will not let in any natural light but will be dimly lit with

small studio spotlights. With these spotlights we will illuminate the laminated sound reflectors.

-  These work by distorting the sound around the room, creating a wholly encompassing experience.

-  The sound used will be information regarding the mines and sound effects, trying to give a sense of the atmosphere in a mine.

1st Space

The Present -  The present space is St. Blazey itself, it encourages the user/tourist to

explore the area. -  Around the area there will be interactive monuments displaying Images,

locals stories, quotes, a twitter feed and general information about St. Blazey.

-  Inside each of the monuments there will be Infrared LED’s and an arduino with RFID readers.

-  The IR LED’s will be mapped to produce the information. -  In order to activate these monuments you will need one of the collectable

items. -  To see the content the user will need a digital camera of some sort.

Forcing the user to take a picture and collect the information. -  There will be no information to where they are, again encouraging the

user/tourist to return.

The Present

3rd Space -  The Future -  Within this space there will be hidden projectors which will be

mapped to the walls. -  This information will explain the future plans such as the St.

Austell, St. Blazey and China Clay Area Regeneration Plan. -  Again in order to see this content you will need a collectable item

to activate the projectors.

Future Development

What else can the Monuments/Spaces be used for ?

- Bringing the monuments to a more personal level, allowing the locals to add their own information about local news, events and advertising for businesses.

- Collectable items create potential for a south west oyster card which allows people to access multiple installations across the south west.

- Future Space could also be used for community activities, such as, lectures, films, and exhibition space for local artwork.
