Presentation Structure

Once upon a time…


Your presentation is a story told in three parts.

Part I: The Opening

• Purpose▫ Gain attention of audience

Establish credibility▫ Introduce central thought, purpose

or objective▫ Make the subject relevant by

relating to your audience Why do you care about your research? Why might they care about your research?

▫ Tell them what you are going to tell them


Part II: The Body• Establish a framework that works

for you• Should have flow, unity, and logic • Enumerate points to help flow• Focus – just the information you

need for today’s audience, not everything you know about the topic


“What” a Head; “Why” a Heart

• Information for the head answers the questions of “what” and “how”▫ Data, statistics, process, results

• Information for the heart answers the questions of “why” and “who cares”▫ Stories, analogies, quotes, implications


Part III: The Conclusion• Summarizes main points-only

highlights• Reminds the audience why they care

about your research• Alert audience you are finishing• Finish on time and with a flurry• Ensure understanding, commitment,

and next steps

Technique Tips• Speak with people

• Not at them ; Not down to them• Make eye contact with your audience

• Connect with your audience• Eye contact, intonation, volume, • Stories, visual aids, facts• They should be comfortable with you

• Feel good about yourself and your topic• Project your enthusiasm to your audience• Make sure you can pronounce words correctly


Technique Tips
