Colin Stokes

• Colin Stokes is a proud father who has always had a passion for raising his son and daughter the morally best way possible. In his speech he questions how movies are raising our youth and what message they are sending.

THESIS: How movies are teaching manhood throughout time.

Capturing The Audiences Attention

Colin starts his speech by describing how his children have always meant so much to him. He starts with informing the audience about the first time he let his daughter watch The Wizard of Oz. He then describes how The Wizard of Oz uses female characters throughout the entire story. This eventually leads him to more of his speech to open up for the audience.

Keeping The Audiences Attention

He keeps the audiences attention by then comparing The Wizard of Oz to Star Wars. He talks about how his son saw Star Wars and fell in love with it, but he questioned why. Colin identifies how similar the two movies are, but with a completely different outlook on the characters.

TED COMMANDMENTS• Colin uses the TED commandments well he engages the audiences

attention throughout the entire speech by keeping focused on his topic, but with a sense of humor. The commandment that he followed the best was Thou Shalt Tell A Story. He uses real life incidents with his children to show how movies are making people grow up thinking certain ways because of the examples on the big screen.

Dynamism Grade:4/5 Colin uses a great topic to get the audiences attention. Just at times it seemed as if he was a little nervous about his speech. This was more towards the beginning of the speech, but he eventually overcame his nerves and delivered a great speech.

Colins view on creativity shows us that sometimes it can direct us toward the wrong path. He emphasizes that creativity can lead us in the right direction in teaching us what is right and what is wrong. I don’t believe that this disagrees with Ken Robinsons speech but it’s kind of a directional look towards Robinsons speech

CREATIVITY:

Page 9: Presentation public speaking

- In comparison with their technical side of each speech they both use real life situations and visual effects to stimulate the audiences attention.

-The biggest difference of the two speeches was how much more confidence in public speaking Robinson has over Stokes.

I’ve learned through Colin’s speech that I must keep it direct but add some real life situations. Keeping the audiences attention can be hard without any comical relief.
