Cultural context Cultural Context can be defined by our upbringing and cultural

background. This refers to thoughts, opinions and feelings that result from experiences.

Sawfreaks take on the ideas that the Saw franchise expresses and make them their own.

They are conscious about its effects to society but somehow encourage the influences of the film and how the film itself is influenced by the society in which it is produced.

Page 9: Presentation project-3-new

However, it rarely deals with the negative aspects of how society views the franchise instead it glorifies the franchise itself.

With its most important news being whether or not the Saw franchise will continue with another movie, it fails to deal with some of the real arguments pertaining to Saw; Is it or is it not torture porn?

How can you understand their culture and work

Saw fans have a strong enough interest that some changes in their lifestyles are made to accommodate devotion to the series of movie. They want to get externally involved with it and they are motivated to demonstrate their involvement though certain behaviours and the fan site www.sawfreaks.com allows them to do so.

Page 11: Presentation project-3-new

Fans can sometimes also wish to acquire material objects related to the movie or join debates on forums about the traps and theories in the movie.

Their culture and work are solely based on the world and theories created in the movie.

Page 12: Presentation project-3-new

There are people who know the saw movies only from the advertisements and they assume they like the twisted traps but for the real fans its the twisted plot lines that makes them to get more involved with it and access fan sites like Saw freaks.

“The SAW franchise I think are the best movies in this genre and took this genre to a completely new level.”

These fans are the persons that creates the wallpapers, comics, games and videos they even explain the theories behind the movie so that everyone can understand and by doing so they, the fans which are the consumers become the producers.

We can argue that using De Certeau’s theory on the practice of everyday life that using strategies and tactics is a way that a prosumer community has taken to draw a specific audience in

Bourdieu’s theory on the close affective relations with text is a ‘valuable anti-bourgeois’, a ‘popular mode of expression’

We can argue that a prosumer community is a particular mode of engagement with the text, producing material based on the material chosen

Theory

Page 16: Presentation project-3-new

Another theorist, Jenkins argues that once cult work was discovered, it developed into them being consciously designed to produce fan interactions.

This can be linked to the prosumer community, arguing that from later fan sites or from personal relations and experience to the material, that fan interactions were created through community pages and sites.

Page 18: Presentation project-3-new

Fan fiction and fan art communities usually have a set of rules that they follow to help preserve the longevity of their

website.

1. They agree to not profit from or sell copies of their creations.

2. They always proclaim that their work is unofficial and has no connection with the creators.

3. Finally, they respond to requests from the copyright holder to remove content and work with the creator as

needed.

Clearly states that it is a fansite.

.

Clearly states that the work on the site is just a fan creation and most importantly states that it is not an official site.
