Art and Art History• As part of Lumina Festival, the CAB Art Gallery held an
opening reception for Betty Brown: Retrospective with over 100 guests.
• Co-PI’s Drs. Taylor and Brander received a grant from NOAA’s marine debris program for nearly $300K and Dr. Ann Pabst and Duke University collaborators receive over $2.3M from BOEM.
Communication Studies• Dr. Julie-Ann Scott had three top papers recognized by
the National Communication Association and each will be presented at the November conference.

Creative Writing• Ornament, faculty member Anna Lena Phillips Bell’s
debut poetry collection, won the 2016 Vassar Miller Prize in poetry and was published in April.
• The late Hannah Frank was awarded the 2017 Norman McLaren-Evelyn Lambart Award for Best Scholarly Article for Animation Studies.
• SMILe software developer Karl Ricanek has raised $3.4M for funding, research and global expansion.

conjunction with CFPUA

Earth and Ocean Sciences• Scott Nooner received NSF funding for two different
projects totaling over $289K.
• Lynn Leonard reports that the dept. received $372K this year for CORMP and has received funding since 2000.
• Online Master of History program was ranked 1st nationally by BestColleges.com and GradSource, and was ranked 10th by the College Affordability Guide.
• 200+ scholars travelled to UNCW to attend the Mountain Interstate Foreign Language Conference.

orientation including a reception, tours, and a half-day Engaged Teaching Institute.
Distance Education• Enrollment continues to trend upward with 31%
increase from y-t-y and new MOU with MCB Camp Lejeune effective until 2026.

PhD Integrative Coastal & Marine Sciences
Submitted fall 2012; stalled, affected by mission statement limitations and GA marine science review. Appendix A submitted by ECU and UNCW on 5/25/16. Vote on 8/4/16 by UNC Graduate Council.
Campus(s) approvals during Spring 2017 for submission to UNC-GA by summer 2017.
UNCW/ECU committee continues to work on the development of joint PhD, adapting ECU’s existing PhD in Coastal Resources Mgmt.
