“In this turbulent and interconnected environment, we need more engagement with the world, not less: we must build more connections with other countries, adapting our global role, not pulling back from it.”

David Lidington, MP, Minister of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office

A day in 2023, projecting the futureI’m traveling to research a topic, and to meet a team, as I am their new manager.

As soon as I arrive, I receive a message telling me the distance I’ve just traveled, the potential impact on the environment in terms of carbon footprint, and how I can combat this effect.

Then I receive information on my mobile concerning the location: what the weather is like etc.

Waiting for a cabI receive a message stating that given my destination and my usual standard of comfort, I’d be better off taking a cab.

While I wait for the cab, I get a message telling me how long I will have to queue, who the people interested in sharing a cab are and what their destinations are. Then I can decide which cab to get in (the newest one, the green cab, the cleanest one, the hybrid one etc...)

In the cabI get a message asking if I wish to talk to the taxi driver or to work.

I have an iPad screen in the cab and I can choose to watch the news, charge my phone, start a meeting, listen to various kinds of music, or have a conversation with the people who share the cab. I don’t need to pay the driver, since the amount will be deducted directly from my bank account.

Arriving at the office

Thanks to my phone, right before I reach my destination, the hostess is informed that I’m close to the office. The doors open as they recognize my phone, then the hostess guides me to the meeting room.

During the meeting

I know who the people in front of me are as everyone around the table has typed their name and position on a screen. I also know if they support my project or not.

Lunch breakLunch is at a restaurant with an interactive table, with menus projected onto tabletops, allowing diners to order food and beverages interactively, to change the ambiance of their individual tables, to play games and even to order up local information and services, such as booking cabs!

I can choose my meal, trackpad to navigate in the menu, and I know in advance the number of calories that I’m allowed, since my phone tells me how much exercise I've had and how many calories I am allowed to have.

Interactive shoppingI have to buy some groceries. I receive a message from the brand as I’ve already shopped there. I can decide either to get exactly the same grocery list or be guided into the store.

The brand knows my age and my habits so it guides me to buy exactly what I need. I scan the products with my phone and get out without using the cash point. Then I receive a text message confirming the amount that I’ve spend.

• While shopping, I can use my mobile phone to read review while in store, to compare prices, receive advice from friends and family, take photographs of the products, look up product information, check the product’s availability at another store, and see if it’s easier to order online.

The mobile phone is not the enemy of retailers : instead mobile technology offers an opportunity to  engage with people and to nudge them towards the cash register.

After-work

I arrive at a party and get a message telling me how many people I know in the room, how many are friends(facebook contacts), how many are colleagues, how many are work contacts (linkedin network), how many nationalities are present etc.

Then, as I walk through the party, my phone guides me to people who share the same status information I do: willing to encounter people, to talk, here for professional reasons etc.

Hotel design

The hotel has been designed by aircraft designers, and reflects an overall sense of identity as a space. It is neither overwhelming nor being overwhelmed by the technology at its heart. The rooms are small and smartly designed.

The design is based around the keywords warmth, vibrancy, charm and theater. The hotel's technological aspects are balanced out by a creative, sensuous social space with a strong personality.

Connecting with the world through technology

To communicate with family members on a different continent, play games, read stories, read the children's homework, visit an exhibition, or choose a program on TV.

ConclusionTo conclude, social interactions will inevitably be dominated by technology and technological innovations, but this technological pervasiveness can help us live productively in an interactive world.

We will gain an improved ability to communicate and share our activities online, to a dedicated audience.
