  • NAMSS Certification: Putting MSPs in the Drivers Seat

  • Fast Certification FactsNAMSS has achieved NCCA accreditation for the CPCS and CPMSM certificationsNAMSS CCN completed a job task analysis which was used to develop the newest versions of the certification exams Implementing a Certificant Referral Program to increase certificant candidates

  • Why Certify?Certification by NAMSS puts MSPs in the drivers seat: It increases MSPs potential for advancement in any healthcare environment and indicates to their supervisor(s) and accreditation surveyors that they are experts in the field, both which enhance an MSPs value and job security.

Job seekers! Certification is arequirement of many employers, especially in positions of management.

  • NAMSS Partnerships: Building Recognition for MSPs as the Gatekeepers to Quality Care

  • NAMSS 2011 Advocacy AgendaTo educate policymakers and healthcare leaders on the value of the MSP in the delivery of healthcareTo advocate for policies and resources that will support MSPs in our evolving rolesTo work with government, accreditation agencies, and association leaders to ensure that patient safety remains the central focus of quality healthcare

  • Integration of health IT should not be limited to the electronic health recordMSPs should have a one-stop source for a primary source verified file, making the credentialing process more efficientA solution that will not replace MSPs, but allows MSPs to focus time on the investigation of questionable files, OPPE, FPPE, and other quality-focused initiativesThe Ideal Credentialing Solution

  • Intelligent. Using available technology, the system would perform a cross-check of data elements to verify the physicians identity and to catch adverse information that may not have been reported in the applicationInteroperable. The system would be based online in a secure system that works with credentialing softwareInnovative. Many companies are trying to develop a one-stop credentialing system, but there is no true solution yet availableHow Would it Work?

  • The Ideal Credentialing Solution would use hospital directory information or a standardized roster to piece together a timeline of physician affiliationsThis would provide a solution to the time-consuming process of investigating time gaps in a physicians application

    Affiliation History

  • Course instructors at Harvard/MIT have expressed interest in having students explore the feasibility of creating the Ideal Credentialing SolutionHarvard/MIT students will also look at existing technology to see how it matches up to the concept of the Ideal Credentialing SolutionNAMSS continues outreach to government and private stakeholders for their thoughts on the Ideal Credentialing SolutionThe Ideal Credentialing Solution

  • Medical Staffing Ratios SurveyNAMSS commissioned a Medical Staffing Study in 2009 to provide states and individual members with updated data and trends.

The results of the study help:Identify the number and validate the complexity of the application and verification process. Provide a benchmark for facilities to reference when justifying business needs. Indicate how tasks, roles, and responsibilities of medical services staff have expanded and changed over time.

Results of the survey and materials to help maximize its application are available to NAMSS members in the Members Only Section of the Web site.

  • MSP Video What Is Medical Staff Management? Viewable and downloadable on the NAMSS Web site Emphasizes the value of medical services professionalsDemonstrates the link between MSPs and patient safety

  • Get Involved with NAMSSNow is the time to start thinking about whether a volunteer leadership position within NAMSS is right for you, and if it is, that you are taking the appropriate steps now to reach that goalReview the Director and Officer Criteria found online in the Nomination of Board Members policyIdentify what steps you should take to achieve your leadership goal Reach out to others for guidance

**NAMSS in-person and online courses, live and recorded Webinars, books, tools, quizzes are designed to meet the needs of MSPs at every stage of their careers. *NAMSS offers education for MSPs through a variety of vehicles to provide a comprehensive program designed to meet the needs of various types of learners.In-person courses take place at various locations across the country and are led by a NAMSS instructor in a group setting.eLearning encompasses various types of education all requiring a computer and internet access. These courses range from online courses, where a participant accesses a program online and can move at their own pace, to Webinars (which are first available live and then may be accessed in a recorded version).Quizzes, in which a participant reads or reviews material and then completes an online quiz to test their knowledge.Books and Tools, which may be ordered or downloaded depending on the tool for MSPs to read and reference.

The following slides highlight some of NAMSS education products and programs. The complete list is available at www.namss.org. **Application forms are available on the Web site and on your USB Drive. Also available are print out fact sheets with how you can host these courses in your states. ***Mark your calendar for our future annual conferences.*NAMSS is hoping to partner with State Associations to deliver this new educational programming. It is a face to face one day course that can be offered in conjunction with your state meetings.**The NAMSS certification programs establish industry standards and serve as a comprehensive measure of knowledge in the field. The Certified Professional in Medical Services Management (CPMSM) and Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS) designations identify MSPs who have met an established standard of knowledge and understanding in the field of healthcare credentialing, governance, law, accreditation and regulatory compliance, which will help them perform their duties competently.

Additionally, NAMSS periodically performs a job task analysis (JTA) on both exams to identify the minimum level of competency for MSPs to perform successfully in their jobs. The JTA data is used to develop the newest versions of the certification exams and supports the development of training tools that is enabled by our education committee.*Many certificants report receiving a salary increase as a result of their certification by NAMSS. By achieving your CPCS designation, you gain confidence and demonstrate professional competence in the application of your knowledge. CPCS certificants cite recognition and respect from peers and supervisors as a top value of certification.By achieving certification as a CPMSM, you often gain respect from physicians and medical staff leaders and validate your experience in management of medical services. The knowledge necessary for certification as a CPMSM may require experience beyond your current healthcare environment. By increasing your breadth of knowledge beyond one particular healthcare environment, you increase your marketability, should you choose to seek new employment. Certificants with the CPMSM designation have proven their in-depth knowledge of medical staff bylaws, hospital procedures and standards, management processes and accreditation standards, policies and procedures, which will help them communicate better with physicians and all key stakeholders. **NAMSS is on a strong advocacy mission this year, and our profession is certainly gaining recognition.

*Highlight affiliation history element as a truly unique part of the Ideal Credentialing Solution*Cornyn and Burgess offices were not only selected because Kate is a constituent of each, but because both sit on committees that have oversight over health care legislation. Burgess is an OB/GYN who has a solid knowledge of credentialing.*Point 1: CMS acknowledged credentialing as the first-line of defense against poor care. They recognized NAMSS as a leader in promoting best practices to ensure high-quality credentialing and care.Point 2: Many staffers thought that hospital transparency and proper technology to support credentialing are obvious necessities in healthcare. They were surprised to hear that the reluctance of hospitals to share information and the lack of a fully efficient credentialing system still creates complications in credentialing.Point 3: The purpose of the meetings in DC was to introduce NAMSS and MSPs to federal lawmakers as well as to introduce them to the Ideal Credentialing Solution.*Point 1: Clarification can be found on the Advocacy page of the NAMSS Web site. It clarifies questions on telemedicine and whether or not hospitals need to keep paper copies of physicians credentials on file.Point 2: The CMS Office of E-Health Standards recommended that NAMSS also reach out to the Department of Labor to tell them that having an MSP workforce with the appropriate skills and training is necessary for the delivery of safe healthcare. CMS also encouraged NAMSS to speak with the Department of Commerce, which has an interest in the expansion of telemedicine, which must be supported by comprehensive and efficient credentialing.*Point 1: Many of the revisions involved clarifying and streamlining the standards, or proposing recommendations that would make the standards more in line with the current terminology and practices utilized in HFAP facilities.Point 2: qualified MSPs may not necessarily be certified MSPs. The proposed standard offers certification as a measure of qualification, but NAMSS recognizes that there are many qualified MSPs who entered the profession and through years of experience, have become certified. The standard recognizes this difference.Point 3: The Task Force had a call with George Reuther in February. We expect to hear whether or not HFAP has accepted any of our changes as early as March 2011.*AHLA: NAMSS and AHLAs Medical Staff, Credentialing and Peer Review Practice Group will meet to discuss how to increase transparency among hospitalsCAQH: Version 6 of the CAQH application will include some of the recommendations proposed by NAMSS to make application more hospital-friendlyABMS: NAMSS was invited to nominate a public member to serve on their Database Advisory CommitteeAMA-OMSS/FSMB/NAHQ: These organizations have invited NAMSS leaders to attend their 2011 meetings to continue developing our partnerships

NAMSS continues to reach out to groups such as the American Hospital Association, American Medical Association (full organization), and others. Our outreach in Washington will continue as well.**MSPs are encouraged to share this presentation with other professionals in their healthcare environmentincluding supervisors, human resources personnel, medical directors, chief medical officers, and medical executive committees
