Storm control – increased yield

Turbines don’t switch off at typical cut-out speeds of ~25m/s, but adapt power depending on the wind

Advantages: Power production in stormy conditions, protection against storm damage and improved grid performance

Energy yield of an ENERCON 82m rotor is comparable to conventional machines with 90m

Advantages:

~ Higher efficiency due to modified blade design

~ Lower noise emissions due to optimised blade tips

~ Longer service life due to reduced stress

~ Transport made easier due to streamlined blade design

Ancillary grid services – More than MWh

Comparison: Ireland’s DS3 System Services - Rewards electrical capability that surpasses Grid Code

Minimum requirements include 14 standard services

• Fast Frequency Response (FFR) • Steady State Reactive Power (SRP) • Dynamic Reactive Response (DRR) • Fast Post Fault Active Power Recovery (FPFAPR) • ……..

Additionally: increased payments available via Scalars, eg:

Faster performance – e.g. FFR – up to 2x payment Reliability – especially for SRP (95.5% min required) Features – e.g. SRP with voltage control – double payment Scarcity – targeting wind capabilities (DRR, FPFAPR)

Annual budget: up to € 235 million (from 2020)

FiT Rates for Onshore Wind (100 - 1500 kW)

FiT with only Default Degression

FiT where Deployment Cap has been reached or applied for

FiT if all Deployment Caps reached

• Could still be opportunities to develop through the FIT market

• Feed in tariff is lower than before

• Plus, confusion over how tariff decreases over time if caps are reached

• Poor wind sites will suffer, but projects with good wind will still work

• However, there is already a long queue, and time is limited, so….

• Medium onshore wind must start to look beyond subsidies and the FIT

Could your business also benefit from on site generation?

• CASE STUDY – How End Farm Project

• How End Farm installed 1x E-48 in 2015, at their dairy farm in Cumbria

• Project provides 0.5MW – enough to power ~300 homes

• Power used for refrigeration (9,000 litres of milk cooled daily to 4oC),

milking equipment, farm usage, bore hole pump, and 2x farmhouses

• Saves money long term compared to buying power from the grid

• +20 year protection against price rises

• 3x turbines in 2015 at Draffan, Southfield & Marshill, south of Glasgow

• Andrew Stewart, a local farmer, involved local community & gained

Scottish Government Fund support for the £8m project

Community involvement makes projects more attractive

• Andrew contacted the Lesmahagow

Development Trust (LDT), and this community

group invested 25%, with the remaining 75%

invested by the rural business

• LDT investment promises substantial profits for

local social and environmental developments

• Project contributes to property insulation,

recreational schemes for young people, &

protection of town’s heritage

• 2.5MW – enough to power ~1,500 homes

ENERGY STORAGE

ENERCON have built 2 storage solution projects, and are considering more…

Case Study 1 – Husuhagi, Faroe Islands

• Components – 13 x E-44 900kW, Enercon Smart Container (40ft

Container) and two battery containers from SAFT

• Tech – Li-Ion; 720kWh/2.4MW active discharge power and 1.5MW active

charging power

• Use – ramp rate reduction from wind energy, increase flexibility in grid,

less dependency on oil

Case Study 2 – Feldheim, Germany

• Components – 42 turbine Wind Farm, 3360 battery modules (one

module = 28 cells) from LG Chem, inverter cabinets, boost converter,

control cabinets, subordinate control, calculation of frequency at POC,

housed in a 17mx30m building

• Tech – Li-Ion, 10.79MWh/10MW discharge power

• Use – collaborate with primary control reserve power (balancing),

tertiary reserve, energy management

Page 27: Presentation for Energy Now Expo · PDF fileComparison of the power curve ... calculation of frequency at POC, ... • ENERCON have partnered up with well known consultancies to offer

REPOWERING

Repowering existing sites can increase project viability. Advantages can include:

• Use of existing infrastructure such as access roads

• Use of existing grid connection and hardware

• Simpler planning

• More local acceptance

ENERCON repowering references include:

Case Study 1 – Delabole Wind Farm

• Originally the first commercial onshore wind farm, built in 1991 in Cornwall

• In 2011 Good Energy replaced 10x Vestas 400kW turbines with 4x ENERCON E-70

• Capacity was doubled to 9.2 MW

Case Study 2 – Mean Moor Wind Farm

• Originally the first co-operatively owned wind farm, built in 1997 in Cumbria

• In 2016 Baywind Energy Co-operative, together with Infinergy, replaced 5x Wind World turbines with 5x ENERCON E-70

• Capacity was more than quadrupled from 2.5 MW to 11.5 MW

• Power output expected to increase six-fold

Page 28: Presentation for Energy Now Expo · PDF fileComparison of the power curve ... calculation of frequency at POC, ... • ENERCON have partnered up with well known consultancies to offer

EXTENSIONS

Extending existing sites similarly can also increase project viability. Advantages can include:

• Use of existing infrastructure such as access roads

• Use of existing grid connection and hardware

• Simpler planning

• More local acceptance

• Significant reduction in risk

If you already own a wind turbine, can you use the returns you are making from it to install another?

• Under new market conditions returns may be lower than the initial project…..

• ……….but, may compare well to other investment opportunities

STOCK BUILD GIVES SHORT LEAD TIME

From 2017, we now build stock for single turbine sites in the UK

• New market means some projects need short lead times for turbines

• Turbines, towers and blades are pre made and held in storage

• Component shipped after contract signature

• Reduces lead time from contract signature to installation from 6 months to 3 months

• Gives customers more flexibility

• Gives customers better cash flow
