Health in Uganda• With an average annual growth rate of 3.2%, amongst the largest in the world – Uganda’s

population is expected to increase to 44 Mn by 2020

• Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 6.7 births/woman and a contraceptive prevalence rate of 24% both contribute significantly to the increase in Uganda’s population

• Life expectancy at birth is around 52 years

• HIV prevalence has reduced from more than 30% in the 1980s to 6.4% by the end of 2008

• Infant mortality rate was at 79 per 1,000 live births in 2005

• Hospital bed density of 0.39 beds per 1,000 population

• 0.117 physicians per 1,000 population

• Uganda’s elimination of user fees at state health facilities in 2001 has resulted in an 80% increase in visits

• Total expenditure on health as a percentage of GDP (2009) – 8.2%

Phase I • Substantial investment to upgrade the current infrastructure• Enhancing the already existing medical programs to tertiary level care by bringing in

new medical equipment & clinical skills• Introduction of new specialties• Introduction of high end laparoscopic equipment to bolster the General Surgery and

Gynaecology programs• Strengthening of the Critical Care department• Introduction of fully equipped Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to

strengthen the maternity program• Scaling up of Emergency Medicine and Ambulance services• Provision of comprehensive range of diagnostic services• Creation of a robust referral mechanism so that complex surgical interventions can be
