2018 Dear Friends: I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to everyone taking part in Polytechnique Montréal’s 2018 Poly-Monde industrial mission in India. Innovation, a necessity for business competitiveness in today’s world, is our government’s focus for creating a more sustainable economy and inclusive growth. This visit to India is an unparalleled opportunity for future engineers from Polytechnique Montréal to put the knowledge they have acquired in school into practice by analyzing technologies and their impact on key economic sectors. I am certain that this experience will enable students to strengthen their role as leaders, and that their observations will help make our businesses more productive and our economy more prosperous. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to wish you a very productive trip and offer you my best wishes for success in the future. Sincerely,

LETTER FROM THE SUPERVISING PROFESSOR

Poly-Monde missions have become a tradition at Polytechnique Montreal. Each year, a select group of future engineers from Polytechnique are heavily involved in organizing an industrial mission abroad.

The 29th Poly-Monde mission will take place in India during the Spring of 2018. After a Brexit-influenced 2016 mission to the UK and Ireland and a 2017 mission to the eastern border of the EU, Poly-Monde returns to Asia. A demographic and economic giant, India’s dynamism now makes it as much a key destination for foreign investors as it is for the spirituality-seeking traveler. With its economic development accelerating, how does India balance tradition and modernity 70 years after its independence from the UK? And as the latter drifts away from Europe and reinvents its commercial strategy, what’s in stock for Commonwealth members such as India and Canada?

As the professor in charge, I am pleased and honoured to oversee the academic component of the mission. Under this component, the participants of Poly-Monde acquire the skills to take full advantage of the mission’s experience, such as the economic analysis techniques and the basics of geopolitics.

Poly-Monde is an enriching project. The members of Poly-Monde are learning all aspects of organizing and funding an industrial mission. In these tasks, they are supported by a board of directors that includes former Poly-Monde students, which is a concrete example of the mission’s great impact.

I sincerely wish the participants of the Poly-Monde 2018 mission in India to live the experience of a lifetime. I wish them to further develop there critical skills, valuable in their forthcoming engineering career, but also, and especially, meet inspirational people that will follow them throughout their lives, abroad and at home.

A GREAT PROJECTWHAT IS POLY-MONDE?

Since its founding in 1990, Poly-Monde brings together some 20 graduating engineers from Polytechnique Montreal. Coming from a variety of fields, the members have the chance to live the Poly-Monde experience throughout a full year.

The project aims to organize

an industrial mission abroad that will allow participants to better understand the inter-national issues related to the current global industrial context. Initially, the mission’s team

members identify the economical segments to study and orga-nize visits in Canada during the academic year. These visits allow them to become familiar with the Canadian industrial context as well as the technology-defining competitiveness.

These meetings offer a

concrete vision of the members’ future career challenges, as soon-to-be engineers. Indeed, by talking to leader engineers as well as visiting several compa-nies operating in different areas, the Poly-Monde participants have the opportunity to ponder and analyze the challenges and responsibilities of the engi-neering profession. This early

immersion in the industry will assist them in becoming agents of change throughout their career.

Following the academic year

in May, Poly-Monde members fly abroad to achieve an inter-national three-week mission in a hosting country. The mission give the members the oppor-tunity to reach out companies, universities and dignitaries to engage in an economic, scien-tific and political discussion. Hereafter, the graduating engi-neers synthesize their learning in a mission report during the final stage of the project.

The mission, supported by

Polytechnique Montreal, remains the sole responsibility of Poly-Monde students. Consequently, planning, funding, and organi-zing steps are all conducted by mission members.

The global industrial context is marked by the emergence of new markets, international competition and the globalization of technologies. The growing importance of these new realities greatly influences the academic development of engineers of all kinds.

In this spirit, the International

Project orientation, introduced at

Polytechnique Montreal in 2007, provides training for students wishing to understand the chal-lenges of globalization. In this perspective, the Poly-Monde mission aims at training engi-neers to better understand the global challenges of tomorrow. Beyond industrial visits, two courses of this orientation are mandatory for all members of Poly-Monde. The first one,

Technology and international competition provides microeco-nomic basis for market analysis in which globalized companies operate. The second one, Poly-Monde Industrial Mission, allows students to put into perspective the development of a company through the macroeconomic and geopolitical context that surrounds it.

INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERS

OUR GOALS

Identify and explore technological sectors that define the competitive-ness of Canadian businesses compared to peer countries.

Discover the technologies and strategies to improve the competitiveness of Canadian companies in international markets.

Develop entrepreneurship, multidisciplinary teamwork, critical thinking, leadership, openness, etc.

Understand the international context in which the countries are evolving.

Last year, for its 28th edition, the Poly-Monde team chose to study sectors particularly related to current events. Members of the mission participated in some thirty visits throughout the province of Quebec, focu-sing on the sectors of forestry, multimedia, smart cities and cyber security. It is with a better understanding of the commer-cial and technological realities of those sectors that the team headed to the Baltic countries and Finland to compare the issues and markets of the targeted sectors. In total, the Poly-Monde team has carried out more than 30 industrial visits in six cities

from four countries during its three-week mission.

FORESTRY INDUSTRY

Predominantly covered by the boreal forest, the province of Québec has reformed its forest management system to over-come the ecological errors of the past, while optimizing the harvesting of these resources. Despite the ongoing disagree-ments between the main players in the forestry sector, it is the current softwood conflict that hinders its export, the largest market industry in Quebec. In the baltic countries and Finland, silviculture is very present due

to more limited territory. As the pulp and paper industry demand is decreasing, multinationals like Stora Enso and Metsa Group are currently developing alternative solutions such as environmen-tally friendly wood packaging products. The growing popu-larity of wooden buildings also gives a new wind to this historic industry.

MULTIMEDIA

With the growing use of digital technology, the field of multi-media is evolving rapidly. In Quebec, the government has

put in place monetary policies to attract foreign companies and to encourage the development of new companies. It is therefore in Montreal that Square Enix, Float4, iLLOGIKA and Moment Factory are mingling. Investments are currently being made to develop new specialized programs and increase the sector’s number of skilled workers. The Baltic countries are not immune to this problem, where several startup companies are trying to penetrate the international market. Visits to TutoTOONS, Vividly App and Creative Mobile have allowed the team to understand that this sector now reaches a large number of users and diverse industries.

SMART CITIES &

CYBERSECURITY

With the growing urban popu-lation, companies such as IBM and Cisco now offer consulting services and data management solutions to enable their clients to better understand the issues affecting citizens. The city of Montreal sees a great potential to develop applications facilita-ting public transport as well as systems allowing the preven-tion of water network problems. While NOKIA has also changed its offer of services in Finland, Estonia has surprised its popula-tion by developing the e-Estonia system, enabling its citizens to have access to and modify online and from a single account, their administrative documents such as their income tax reports, their medical documents and their vote in the various elections. 65

MISSION 2018 : INDIA

India represents a signi-ficantly rising force on the international economic scene that must not be overlooked. With a population exceeding 1.3 billion, it is set to take the first rank of the global popula-tion scale, while simultaneously developing the expertise of its workers through the creation of numerous technical and engineering schools. India has a large and increasingly qualified population, giving it a growing economic strength. However, this spectacular expansion leads to reflection. What are the socio-economic consequences of this rapid development on its habi-tants, small traders and large companies? What role does the Indian culture play in this expansion and what are the obstacles facing develop-ment?

It is through the study of the three distinct economic sectors that Poly-Monde 2018 will try to identify the diffe-rences and establish parallels between India and Quebec. Indeed, the stakes and perfor-

mances of the fields of food and agriculture, biomedical and pharmaceutical technolo-gies as well as Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) will be studied to better understand the changes taking place in India and the competi-tiveness of this country in full emergence.

FOOD & AGRICULTUREIn India, agriculture is the

most important sector of economic activity with 58% of rural households contributing to the industry, accounting for 17% of the national GDP. In recent years, a number of factors have contributed to the growth of the agricultural sector in India, especially the rising house-hold income and consumption as well as the expansion of the food processing and export sector. This increase in demand raises important issues, namely a decline in the areas owned by farm households and their incomes, and an increase in food waste, which is attribu-table to supply chain logistics problems.

BIOMEDICAL & PHARMACEUTICALThe biomedical and pharma-

ceutical sectors can be divided into four distinct subsectors: biotechnology companies, active ingredient manufactu-rers, clinical research centers and innovative and generic pharmaceuticals. It is the latter that receives the most attention in India as the Indian pharmaceutical companies provide more than 20% of the global generic drugs. On the other side of the globe, the field of biotechnology is booming in the Montreal region and more globally in Canada. As the demand for health care continues to grow globally, this development can be expected to continue in the years to come.

INFORMATION & COMMUNICATIONTECHNOLOGIESThe global ICT sector is a

very competitive and innova-tive market. In 20 years, this industry has grown exponen-tially in India, representing up

to 60% of the world market in 2017. Apart from the increase in demand, this rapid deve-lopment can be attributed to competitive advantages in the workforce and to the creation of attractive policies encou-raging companies to make a digital transition. More preci-sely, outsourcing of ICT is a crucial element to India’s economy, enabling among other things external compa-nies to speed up the product development. Indeed, Business Process Management (BPM) accounts for 23% of all Indian ICT exports.

At the end of the mission, Poly-Monde will offer a comparison of the practices and performances between Quebec and India, dealing with the food industry, the biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors as well as the ICT.
