The building and construction sector contributes 3% of all informal jobs in Kenya and is a key employment opportunity for the youth.Yes, despite being a critical supplier of jobs, building and construction is faced by significant skills shortage with only 25% of workers formally trained.
“In a pool of 100 masons who say they are qualified, less than 10% have the desired level of skills; in order to select who to work with, we give them assignments and establish who can perform. We face a significant shortage of relevant skill for finishers, and have to import them from China, India, and Eastern Europe. The cost of expatriation can go a long way in improving salaries for local staff if available in sufficient skill level. Right now it takes nearly 4 times as long to complete finishing of developments.”
~ A private sector actor in the building & construction industry in Kenya
