NATURA 2000 NETWORK
The Natura 2000 Network is the world’s biggest coordinated protected-site network and the main tool for preserving European
natural heritage.
It was born from the Habitats Directive in 1992 and also includes the sites declared under the
Birds Directive of 1979.
Its goal is to ensure conservation of Europe’s most valuable and threatened habitats and
species in the long term.
NATURA 2000 NETWORK
SOME FIGURES:
27,500 sites throughout the whole of Europe
1863 sites in Spain, around 2120000 km2, which means 30% on surface percentage
275 sites in marine environment in Spain which is 84,404 km2
THE LARGEST MARINE CONSERVATION PROJECT IN EUROPE
And one of the most advanced in terms of knowledge and protection of the marine
environment.
Thanks to the previous project called LIFE+ INDEMARES we have increased the marine
protected surface from 1% to 8%.
Integrated, innovative and participatory management of the
Natura 2000 network in the Spanish marine environment.
OBJECTIVE AND PROGRAMME OF ACTIONS
OBJECTIVE AND PROGRAMME OF ACTIONS
Towards a new model for the management of the sea.
OBJECTIVE AND PROGRAMME OF ACTIONS
Effective, innovative and integrated management of the protected areas of the Natura 2000 network, with the active participation of the sectors involved and research as basic tools for decision-making.
Objective
• Improve the level of knowledge.
• Complete the Natura 2000 network in the sea and ensure effective management of the protected areas.
• Ensure the maintenance or restoration of a favourable conservation status for
habitat types and species of community interest.
• Improve the surveillance and monitoring of Natura 2000 sites and the conservation status of habitats and species.
• Provide adequate capacity building, as well as promoting the sharing of information, awareness raising and cooperation between stakeholders involved in conservation.
• Promote and explore the opportunities that the marine areas of the Natura 2000 network offer.
• Promote innovative approaches related to the Natura 2000 network marine areas.
• Involve the socio-economic sectors and the users of the sea in the management of the areas.
• Demonstrate the positive impact of integrated management and disseminate this information so that it can be applied in other regions of the EU.
• Support measures to promote adaptation to climate change.
