adds, “the following year, I was able to see the benefits from a continued release on cereals and pulse crops. I even saw results in year three.”
In fact, one of the primary benefits of TIGER 90CR® Sulphur is the season-long release, which results in opti-mum availability and minimal loss of sulphate during the growing season compared to water soluble sulphate forms. (Fig #1)
The preseason application is most effective in the fall to allow for the winter freeze thaw cycle to degrade TIGER 90CR® Sulphur into a micro fine particle. This fine particle oxidizes rapidly as the soil warms and soil microbes come to life. The high application rate of 100 lbs/acre provides a superior distribution of sulphur particles. There is also an improvement of NPK utilization because sulphur is critical for full utilization of NPK. And the production of sulphuric acid surrounding the sulphur particle acidifies the micro site, which enhances phosphate and micronutrient availability. All of these benefits combined with reduced overall application costs and
Typically sulphur is applied in the spring as a blend with ammonium sulphate as a seed row application. Another option is to apply TIGER 90CR® Sulphur in the fall or early spring as a surface broadcast application. This method exposes the sulphur particles allowing for maximum degradtion and release during the growing season.
In addition some innovative farmers are applying sulphur as a preseason application, but at higher rates. The high rate TIGER 90CR® Sulphur appli-cation will provide a multiyear benefit as it releases over the growing season and into the second and third sea-sons. Soil testing is utilized to monitor the Sulphur residual effect. Producers such as Dean Hobman from Nokomis, Saskatchewan have been applying TI-GER 90CR® Sulphur at 100 lbs/acre in the fall or early spring to the surface of the soil. The results provide valuable insight for other farmers considering the same type of application.
According to Dean Hobman, he “start-ed applying TIGER 90CR® Sulphur in the fall to reduce fertilizer blend bulk as well to optimize canola yields.” As a result Dean finds that he is able to seed more acres in a day and his yields have been excellent. Dean
time savings are valuable to today’s farmers who struggle to manage their time, while targeting optimum crop production.
Tiger-Sul is the world leading producer of bentonite sulphur and bentonite sulphur micronutrients. With three North American production facilities as well as a licensed production facility in South Africa, Tiger-Sul continues to lead the market in quality and innovation as demand for sulphur fertilizer grows.
Innovations such as the New Leader’s MultiBin Fertilizer and Micronutrient spreader transforms a single hopper into three or four large-capacity hoppers, allowing operators to cover more acres and reduce fill time while increasing productivity and maintaining an accurate spread pattern. The MultiBin system is ideal for the application of TIGER 90CR® Sulphur as a preseason application.
