Statement of Need: Obesity
The Obesity Crisis
• African American adults are nearly 1.5 times as likely to be obese compared with White adults.
• Approximately 47.8 percent of African Americans are obese (including 37.1 percent of men and 56.6 percent of women) compared with 32.6 percent of Whites (including 32.4 percent of men and 32.8 percent of women).
Trends in Physical Inactivity
• The percentage of adults who do not engage in any leisure time physician activity is higher among African Americans (31.9%) and Latinos (34.6%) than Whites (22.2%).
• 60% of adults are not sufficiently active to achieve health benefits
• A study of more than 30,000 healthy adult US women found that middle-aged women need at least an hour of moderate activity a day to maintain a healthy weight without restricting calories

A Prescription for Exercise
• A Prescription for Exercise is an initiative created by the National Medical Association to encourage membership to include physical activity when designing treatment plans for patients.
• The NMA will convene five (5) meetings with member providers on the importance of writing exercise prescriptions at the conclusion of each office visit
• Members will be re-educated on coaching techniques to effectively counsel overweight/obese patients

• Prescription for Exercise was piloted at the NMA’s Annual Scientific Session in Detroit, 2016
• The OBGYN Section led by Theodore Jones, MD hosted a lunch presentation
• More than 80 physicians attended and the response was overwhelmingly positive
