higher levels of anxiety. These symptoms are akin to ‘jet lag’ – which I can tell you from experience is never good - and often results in increased absences and difficulty concentrating in class. All because the child allowed their sleep patterns to shift over the holiday period.

Early in the school year parents and students alike often approach me concerned that they are already falling behind in their learning. Some are able to get control of the situation, but for many sleep deficit is a major road block to productive learning, and their physical and mental well-being.

To both students and parents I say ‘thank you’ for working together with Prescott College staff this year. Students, please take the time to relax and rejuvenate in order to be ready for the new academic year of 2018. But students and parents alike need to remember that to really make the most of the holidays, sleeping patterns need to be monitored so that students do not return to school sleep deprived.

Also, monitor physical activity and engage in daily exercise. This is best done outside where direct sunlight is on your face for at least half an hour per day.

Jesus’ words are recorded in the book of John Chapter 10 verse 10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

May you all have a Merry Christmas as we celebrate the coming of our Saviour Jesus Christ. May we all choose the good life in Christ, and have it to the full. I look forward to being able to serve you again in 2018.

Mr Peter Charleson, Principal

We received some lovely feedback from Glen Ewen Estate’s staff at the Senior Students’ Formal, that our students were very well mannered on the day and some of the students made an effort to actually talk to the staff, which they found quite rare.Always great to hear these sorts of comments from the public.

SPEECH NIGHT 2017

The 2017 school year finished with a celebration of students’ achievements, both academic and sporting at our 2017 Speech Night on Thursday 7 December. The Principal, Mr Charleson, addressed and highlighted the College’s achieved targets and pointed to goals and visions for the future. This year’s College Captains, Sahil and Monique, gave a very creative and entertaining speech - a reflection on how they are feeling now that they have completed Year 12.

It was a night full of wonderful memories for the Year 12s, through the eyes of the Principal, teachers and the students. Looking back, at not only their final year, but at their journey from the nerves of their first day of high school to becoming young adults about to take the next giant leap into the unknown, we all felt proud, knowing what fine people they have become. It is bittersweet watching them leave the nest after such an amazing journey, but with every ending comes a new beginning. We wish our graduating class every success in whatever path they choose and hope to see them again in the near future.

Thank you to dignitaries, special guest speakers, families and all the students who attended. Thank you to Miss Orwa and Prescott College Creative Arts Choir for your beautiful performances. And last, but not least, to all the dedicated teachers for their work throughout the year and your personal videos to each of the students. They were very heartfelt, moving and very humorous (as you can see from the reactions in the photo below).

Today is a day of mixed feelings. I am sad at leaving a place that has been home for the past 13 years, yet excited about the challenges at my new school, Hilliard Christian School, in Hobart, Tasmania.

There are too many memories to recount all of them. They involve classes that I enjoyed interacting with, Outdoor Education Camps, staff-student games, parent-teacher interview nights...in fact, sitting here on the last day I can recall very few bad days.

I have been privileged to have worked with many friends who were also colleagues, enjoying a laugh during the day, debates about football, discussions about curriculum and socials together.

What I will miss the most is the relationships formed over the years, whether it be the handshakes with the Year 9 class, the jokes with the Year 12s, and even the collegial discussions on the SACE Moderation Panel.

Prescott College will always have a place in my heart, as it is also the place where my three children undertook their secondary education. This environment has enabled them to grow into mature young adults who are ready to take their place in society, all while maintaining their faith in God.

As I move to become the Principal of another school, I pray that I will find the enjoyment at the new location, that I have had here.

Wishing you God’s blessing over the holiday season and the best wishes for 2018.

Mr Stephen Littlewood, Maths Teacher

We will miss you, Mr Littlewood, but I’m sure the Crows supporters won’t miss being taunted!

We wish you all the very best in your new role and may God keep you and your family well. Hope you carry the peacefulness and contentment you found here down in Tassie.

Grand Final results for our Vista Teams

Prescott College vs Prescott College Southern

Prescott Schools Challenge was held Thursday Week 7 of Term 4. Junior students had the opportunity to participate in Boys Basketball and Girls Netball. This year the competition was held at Prescott College and all students participated with great enthusiasm in extremely difficult weather conditions.

The Prescott College boys secured a very close win in the Basketball and the Prescott Southern girls displayed a great performance in the Netball.

This year the Prescott Schools Challenge shield was won by Prescott Southern.

Thank you to all those who planned and assisted in making this event a great experience for our students. This includes Mr. Elbourne, Mr Lozada, and Pr Travis T from Prescott Southern and Mr Bocala from the College.

After a successful term of junior basketball, Thursday Week 8 saw both the girls and boys Vista Junior Basketball teams play in their division grand finals. The boys were up against strong competition and after a great effort from the College Boys, Modbury HS secured a 4 point win in their division 2 final.

The girls, after being undefeated all term, entered the final versus Torrens Valley as clear favourites. Torrens Valley had a strong lead throughout the game and looked as though they would pull off an upset in the girls basketball. A great effort by the Prescott girls saw them pull back a substantial lead and secure victory in the final seconds of the match with a 22 - 21 final score. What a great effort by all students who participated in the Vista Weekly sports, well done!

THE END IS JUST A NEW BEGINNING...

It’s a paradox (a seemingly absurd or contradictory statement which when investigated may prove to be well founded or true) that feels right at home in the final newsletter of the 2017 school year.

This is the end, but it’s also the beginning of many new things.

In Revelation 22:13 (the last book of the Bible if you want to look it up), God describes himself to the writer John this way; “I am the alpha and the omega (these being the first and last letters in the Greek alphabet. If we were to put it in modern English we could say, “I am the A and the Z”), the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

But it goes further too – because God isn’t just the first and the last, but everything in between as well!

Our God encompasses all time – the many endings and beginnings that make up the history of not only the world, but the universe and all created things. And He wants to be part of all our beginnings and endings as well.

As the 2017 school year ends I leave you with the words of Pr Rick Warren: “Through salvation our past has been forgiven, our present is given meaning, and our future is secured.”May God bless and be at the centre of all your beginnings and endings as 2017 draws to a close.

Want to contact Pastor Braden? Email him at [email protected], call 0490 848 811 or drop by the Chaplains office Tuesday-Thursday each week.

The office will be closed as of Thursday 14 December and will re-open on Monday 22 January, 2018.We’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe, enjoyable and holy Christmas.May this Christmas fill your homes with the peace and joy of Christ, and the new year bring you closer to God. Merry Christmas! From the staff of Prescott College

We had a great evening at the Speech Night! Proud parents, good looking students, smiling families and teachers who felt that those words of encouragement had paid off. Well done and congratulations to the graduating class of 2017. May God continue to bless your lives. Thank you to all other students and their families who also attended. The College looks forward to seeing your student up on stage in the coming years as they reach the end of their secondary schooling at Prescott College. May everyone in our community have a blessed and Merry Christmas, as we celebrate Jesus’ birth and the life He offers us in Him.

The primary goal is to empower people with STEM and programming skills, especially in developing countries. It was developed with an intention to understand and utilise electronics to its maximum potential, which benefits all. It is based on Dr. Mohammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, whose work relates to social businesses. The strong emphasis on social enterprise learning is geared towards the vision of “the world without poverty” by creating a large number of Social Enterprise Ambassadors to promote Dr Yunus’ vision to micro finance social business to help billions of people

living in poverty earn an income. You can help with these initiatives and at the same time hone your STEM skills by joining their workshops held during school

terms and school holidays. Or a school club can be created that run STEMSEL as STEM

curriculum. More information is available on their website: stemsel.com

Prescott College students were able to experience STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in action when Weikee and university interns from STEMSEL Foundation visited the school. STEMSEL stands for Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) and Social Enterprise Learning (SEL). It is a not-for-profit organisation run by university students from fields of engineering and business, that is dedicated to teaching the next generation about building blocks of a modern economy such as microchip applications and programming.
