Musical Jars Children can experiment with sound!! You will need a few jars or drinking glasses fill them to different levels with water and see what sound they make when you tap a spoon to the side.

Learning outcomes Learning Outcome 4: Children develop a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, enquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating.

Resources Glass jars or cups (minimum 3) Spoon Water Food dye (optional) Joana @ Barrymore Road shows us

What’s next Add more jars and different levels of water. Why don’t you try something else other than water and see if that changes the sound yet again?

Key Concepts Experimentation. Sound waves. The brain’s interpretation of sounds as a musical note. Sound travelling through space/air in waves.

Let’s Make Some Paint Did you know that you can make your own paint using chalk and water? All you need is some chalk, water and a small rock or piece of wood to crush up the chalk. Once the chalk turns into powder add some water.

Key Concepts Using man made and natural resources to create. Expressing creativity through art.

What’s next Store the paint in small containers, zip lock bags or jars. Test the paint on different surfaces; Paper, rocks, concrete, cardboard. Not the kitchen wall! Does it look different when it dries?

Resources Click on the link below to watch Fatma from Aitken Hill Preschool make her own chalk paint. Fatma from Aitken Hill Preschool chalk, brush, rocks, sticks and paper.

Learning outcomes Learning Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners. They work with a variety of mediums and technologies to create.

Let’s Grow A Rainbow…. This paper towel art is a fun activity that doubles as a science experiment!

Learning outcomes Learning Outcome 4: Children develop the ability to mirror, repeat and practice the actions of others either immediately or later. Learning Outcome 5: Children interact verbally and non-verbally with others for a range of purposes.

Key Concepts The water will move up the paper towel through a process called capillary action. The water moves upwards through the paper towel, lifting the washable dye from the markers.

Resources

• Paper towel • Washable markers • Two cups of water

Eliza from Dobell Avenue Preschool

Questions to ask: What colours does a rainbow have?

What do you think will happen to the water?

Why do you think the colours are changing?

How do plants drink water? Plants suck water through their stems through a process called, 'capillary action'. Step 1. add some water to each jar Step 2. add a different coloured food dye to each jar… enough for a bright and vibrant colour. Step 3. add some flowers in each jar Remember to take some “before” photos!

Learning outcomes Learning outcome 4: Learning: Children develop a range of skills and processes such as inquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating.

Resources With Samantha from Annadale Preschool Part A - the experiment Part B - outcome To conduct your own experiment, you will need:

• Recycled jars (3 or more) • White flowers • Water • Food colouring

What’s next After you plant your seeds from your Preschool at Home pack and they begin to grow, make sure you water your plants from the correct place. Hint: water from the roots.

Key Concepts Botany – the scientific study of plants. The natural environment.

The Bouncy Egg Experiment Place a raw egg carefully into the bottom of the glass. Pour the vinegar over the top of the egg, just covering it. Leave it like this for about 24hrs. The next day it will look translucent (see through). If it isn’t, wait until the next day. If it is translucent, carefully take the egg out and rinse it under cold water, rubbing the outside to remove the white film. Check its bounce on a plate. If it can bounce, you can experiment with bouncing it from higher heights!!

Learning outcomes Learning Outcome 4 - Children develop dispositions for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination and reflexivity.

Key concepts Investigation, observation, experimentation, hypothesising and thinking reflectively. Cause and effect and enhance children’s sense of wonder through science.

Resources Vinegar, one raw egg, one clear glass

Watch this video

Questions to ask How does the raw egg feel? Tell me about how the vinegar looks and smells What changes can you see have happened? How does the egg feel now we have taken it out and rinsed it off?

Does it bounce, how far?

Rain Clouds This easy science experiment is a fun way to explain how rain clouds work. Fill your jar about three quarters full of water from the tap. Use the shaving foam to create a cloud on top of the water. Let the foam settle a bit. Now drop food colouring into the 'cloud'. As your cloud fills up, the food colouring will fall into the water creating a rain-like effect.

Learning outcomes

For children to use reflective thinking and inquiry to consider why things happen and what can be learnt from this experience.

Key Concepts

This activity allows children to explore clouds and how clouds make rain. The children will engage in a science experiment.

Resources

• 1 Clear glass or jar • Water • Shaving foam • Blue food colour • Pipette or glass dropper

Watch video Here

Questions to ask What do you think will happen when we use the food colouring on the shaving foam?

What did you see happen?

How to make a paper plane Making a paper plane is so much fun and they are easy to make. Once you have made your plane you can decorate it, have races with your family or make a few and see which one goes the furthest.

Learning outcomes

For children to use reflective thinking to consider why things happen and what can be learnt from this experience.

Key concepts

This activity encourages fine motor skills which help with writing. Mathematical language such as measurement, how far did it fly?

Resources A4 Paper Kylie from Dawson Street Preschool has made a video to show you how to make your won plane Watch the video here

What’s next Using masking tape or chalk, use ‘markers’ to see how far your plane flies each time. Can you beat your own score?

What will make it fly further? Perhaps you might like to design and draw a super jet.

Wiggly Slippery Worms • Did you know that worms have no arms, legs or

eyes? • There are approximately 2,700 different kinds of

earthworms. • Earthworms have tiny retractile bristles along the

body which help give it grip and a slippery mucus covering, allowing the worm to move through even the hardest earth.

Key Concepts Children are curious and enthusiastic participants in their learning.

Resources Worms are wonderful. Watch this short clip to find out more interesting facts about worms. Watch this video

What’s next Have a look inside your garden and see if you can find some worms? Why don’t you draw what you see? We would love to see all your drawings.

What day of the week is it? There are lots of great ways to learn the days of the week and to understand sequencing. You could: Watch the video - Learn the days of the week through song.

Write down the days of the week on 7 different pieces of paper. Discuss the differences in the words, notice that they all end in ‘day’.

Ask children to tell you what day it is (prompt them by reminding them what day yesterday was or what day tomorrow will be).

If your child developing an interest in write letters, invite them to copy words onto the artwork they have completed that day or in the journal they received in their Welcome pack.
