Altoona-Johnstown Bishop’s Night for Vocations 2013 Sister Kathy Kurdziel repre-sented the IHM Sisters at the an-nual Bishop’s Night for Vocations held on May 15 at Our Lady of Lo-retto Community Hall in Loretto, PA. Sponsored by the Serra Clubs of Altoona and Cambria County, the event included a reception with vocation displays from differ-ent religious communities in the diocese, dinner, and recognition of the winners of the poetry, poster, and essay contests sponsored by the Diocesan Offi ce of Vocations. The theme was “Keeping Our Eyes Fixed on Christ.” Since approximately 90 sisters have entered the IHM Congrega-tion from this area, a number of IHM sisters’ relatives and former students shared fond memories of many IHMs and the impact they have had on their lives. Four hundred and fi fty eight people attended this event.

OSP IHM Haitian Outreach CommitteeAt its March meeting the OSP IHM Haitian Project Committee discussed different ways to support the Little Sisters of Ste. Therese in preparation for their chapter. Their 9th General Chapter will take place from August 6-17 at their Motherhouse in Riviere Froide, Carrefour, Haiti. The IHM Congregations have been closely connected to the Little Sisters since 1995 when the congregations entered into a twinning relationship of friendship, hospitality and fi nancial support. Mindful of their approaching Chapter, the committee decided that a letter of support would be sent to the Little Sisters and the following prayer would be used by all four congregations to show our solidarity. This prayer was crafted from the ones being used by the Little Sisters themselves as they move through their time of prepa-ration. Copies of the prayer are included with the Newsletter. Please let us join together in prayerful support of the Little Sisters.

Prayer for Solidarity with The Little Sisters of Ste. Therese in Haiti for their General Chapter

O God, blessed Trinity, in this year of Faith, you call the Li le Sisters of Ste. erese to celebrate their 9th General Chapter around the theme: “Li le Sisters, rediscover your charism as leaders and sowers of hope.” We thank you for this blessing for these Sisters. May their hearts be open and a entive to your call to remain faithful to the mission given them, to work in your great mission of salvation. Loving God, let your Spirit ll each delegate with the faith to experience this chapter in oneness, cohesiveness, transparency and generosity. Mary, you were with the Apostles at Pentecost. Be with the Li le Sisters as they enter into their chapter. Inspire them with courage. Following your example, may it be a prayerful time of placing their trust in Divine Providence. Amen!

IHMs Help Staff DC “Come and See Day”IHM Sisters Kathleen Lunsmann, Rachel Terry and Myra Gilbart attended a day-long “Come and See” retreat for high school girls at the Washington Retreat Center. The event was sponsored by the Washington Archdiocesan Offi ce of Consecrated Life. Fifty-fi ve young women attended the event. The sisters staffed an IHM display table and spent time in prayer and conversation with many of the participants. Contractors worked on the water main pipe at the IHM Center. An

underground leak necessitated the digging of a 200 foot trench and replacement of the pipe. The project has been completed successfully.

Dear Sisters, The Spiritual Renewal Center Study Committee, under the advisement of the mission board, has been in con-versation around your suggestions and dreams for what a Spiritual Renewal Center might look like for us now. The report was submitted to the Leadership Team and the Mission Board at the April 2013 mission board meeting. (The report can be found on the IHM website under Documents for Mission Board April 26, 2013). The study committee recommended that a team be formed to take these creative ideas and explore them further. It is our pleasure to announce that we are ready to begin the first phase of our spiritual renewal by offering this invitation to all IHM Sisters to discern your call and desire to be a part of this team. The team would meet peri-odically (an established timeframe to be discerned) in prayer, conversation and dreaming about what shape this spiritual renewal group will take. We ask that you spend time in reflection and discernment on your own desire to be a part of this “dream team”. This initial phase is open to anyone who wishes to gather in commitment to this endeavor in order to shape how the next phases may look. We are proposing that your personal discernment take place throughout the summer, and we will ask for sisters to respond to this call by September 1, 2013, to the Spiritual Renewal Committee through Sister Patty Tippen, [email protected]. A first meeting will be scheduled for some time in the fall. More details will follow. We will announce this endeavor at the assembly and also follow up with a piece in the IHM Newsletter. The energy, excitement, commitment, and belief in this Spiritual Renewal Team are shared by the Spiritual Renewal Committee and our Leadership Team. Thank you for your responses to our survey. Your input and dreaming in your mission groups have brought us to this place where we are now with this new endeav-or. May we continue to listen to the Spirit and Holy Wisdom for guidance and next steps on this journey! Gratefully, Spiritual Renewal Committee: Sister Patricia Tippen, Chairperson, and Sisters Beatrice Caulson, Mary Ellen Higgins, Mary Schoberg, & Mindy Welding

Keys to the Future: ConCrete next steps

The following are the suggestions of all of the sisters in Peru who gathered in Lima to participate in the Keys to the Future process in February 2013. Sisters Mary Elaine Anderson, Norma Poma Arpi, Jeanne Marie Kearney, Tomasa Fernandez, Eileen Egan and Ancilla Maloney offered the following:• be open and invite women • adapt customs to Latin American culture• be aware that it is hard to welcome new members when we are so busy and work so hard.• socialize and form relationships with more young persons• find ways to participate in events and service opportunities together• stop waiting –we need to start making a plan for a vocation program• meet with young women who are interested; invite them to live with us• include associates to help us organize a vocation program• invite young women that we know to retreat/reflection days to help them discern

In Spanish from the same group:• necesitamos ser más abiertas a la cultura y sus costumbres • el apostolado pone muchas demandas a nuestro tiempo, entonces no es fácil para dedicarnos a encuentros vocationales • ayudar a los nuevos Peruanos conocer nuestra congregación y nuestras costumbres • experiencias en la vida comunitaría: fin de semana y jornadas vocacio- nales mensuales • ser creativas en preparer litúrgias• invitar a mujeres reunirse con nosotros para rezar juntas• invitar alumnus de MU a venir para el Programa del Verano en enero (Sicuani)• celebrar más publicamente Día de la Fundación y 8 de diciembre • comenzar reuniones con mujeres en nuestras casas• comenzar un programa vocacional

From the IHM Business OfficeNew Life Committee Serves as Resource At a joint meeting of the New Life Committee and the Vocation Team, it was suggested that the contact information of members of the New Life Committee be publicized in order to serve as a resource for sisters and associates who are looking to do something for vocations. We’re grateful for the initiatives taken by a number of individuals and groups in mak-ing IHM more widely known and experienced through a variety of service experiences, prayer and refl ection days, and other opportu-nities for sharing our mission and spirit. We hope to see even more of these efforts throughout the congregation. Aware that each of us is called to nurture new life in our con-gregation, we’re also aware that sometimes getting started can be a challenge, so let us know how we can help. Please contact any of these members of the New Life Committee for conversation, ideas, and assistance, or for sharing your own ideas and insights:

Benjamin Franklin by Edmund S. Morgan

Reviewed by Sister Mary Joan Kelleher

Edmund Morgan suggests that while we may regret not having known Franklin personally, we can learn much about him from his writings. It is through them that this former Yale historian describes the Franklin that he uncovered after years of extensive, scholarly research

into the massive collection of this founding father’s writings. While much of this work deals with Franklin’s professional life, it does touch on his personal-ity and private life. Benjamin Franklin’s fascination with the world in which he lived led him to do more than just experiment with electricity, but also to study ocean currents, the causes of the common cold, and chemical elements. It was his concern for his fellow human beings that prompted much of what he did, be it scientifi c, professional, philanthropic or diplomatic. Franklin believed that public interest superseded his own. The book delves extensively into Franklin’s political views before the Stamp Act of 1765. He was a consistent supporter of the English crown until the failure of Parliament and the crown to address colonial rights brought him, somewhat reluctantly, to the opinion that colonial independence must be ac-complished. Franklin’s diplomatic career both in England and France, while well documented by others, receives a fresh appraisal in this book. Franklin’s religious views can, in Morgan’s estimation, be gleaned from his writings. They reveal that one can be moral and God-fearing without the need for organized religion. No doubt this view motivated his staunch defense of separation of church and state in the new republic. The book was critically acclaimed at the time of its publication in 2002 and considered to be one of the best portraits of Benjamin Franklin. While more than a decade has passed since then, the scholarly worth of this biography still stands.
