Preparing for the Inevitable Big One

What happened in Baguio back in 1990 could happen here in Metro Manila as well. The Philippines will have to face another natural disaster yet again that will test each and every Filipino’s strength and faith in God.

The Big One is a 7.2 quake at the west valley fault that could spell disaster of unimaginable proportions. According to a study done by JICA, the said quake will be causing at least 34,00 deaths, 114,000 injuries, 3 million refugees, telecom loss and 4 out of 10 building collapsing.

Before the earthquake strikes, be sure to keep a first aid kit, a battery-powered radio, whistle, flashlight and extra batteries at home. Also, don’t leave heavy objects on cupboards or shelves because they’ eventually fall during an earthquake. Lastly, always make sure to turn the water, gas and electricity off when not in use.

Once you feel the slightest shake on the ground, stay calm. If you’re inside, stay under a table, couch or any other heavy furniture for you to fit in. Make sure to stay away from windows. If you’re outside, stay in an open field away from lampposts or anything that might fall on you especially buildings. If you’re in a car, stop the car and wait for the shaking to stop, then go to an open field where you think is safe.

Right after the big one hits, check yourself and others for injuries and provide first aid immediately for anyone who needs it. Don’t forget to turn on the radio for you to be updated.

We could never avoid any natural hazards to happen. No one could stop nor predict it. All we could do to effectively minimize the casualties and damages it could bring is to be prepared at all times.
