Practicum Overview
o Practicum Schools (rural placement opportunities)
o Expectation Overview (2 Teacher Candidates per Associate Teacher, collaboration)
o Associate Teachers (volunteer, principal approval required)
Placement Process:
o Meeting Certification Requirements (both divisions, both teaching subjects if possible)
o Process varies by school board
o Placements currently in progress
o Placements released November 3 (via portal, Cindy will email)
o Arranging car pools (via OWL site)
Before Practicum Begins:
o Police Checks, ID Lanyards (pick up in Teacher Education office, room 1131)

o Prepare your Teacher Candidate Profile (available via Practicum Resources link above)
o Begin work on your Organizational Binder (see tips in Handbook, page 25)
When you know your placement:
o Email your Associate Teacher (using your Western email address) to
introduce yourself (include your TC profile & program summary)

check first-day details (arrival time, parking)
review your school’s website
Practicum begins!
o Remember to take your… Photo id, police check, Teacher Candidate profile, organizational binder
o Arrive early, sign in at the main office
o Dress code is business casual
Practicum 1 Weekly Expectations
o Observing, Assisting, Planning, Teaching, Reflecting
o Teacher Candidates acquire a “big picture” understanding of schools, communities, students, and teachers as they observe in classrooms, participate in school life, and plan and teach their first lessons.

Associate Teacher Report
Your Associate Teacher will :
around the practicum mid-point, use the Associate Teacher Final Assessment Form for formative assessment
towards the end of the placement, complete the Final Assessment Form for Practicum 1 by providing brief comments and assessing the Teacher Candidate’s progress on each of the continua
check one box to indicate whether the practicum overall was satisfactory or not satisfactory;
share the assessment with their Teacher Candidate, have them sign the form to indicate that they have received it and provide them with a copy which includes signatures
forward a copy of the signed report to the Teacher Education Office via email [email protected] or by FAX (519) 661-2095

Organizational Binder
ORGANIZING YOUR ORGANIZATIONAL BINDER (PAGE 25 of Handbook) always have a hard copy with you at school during your practicum
o Instructional Organization:- daily schedule/agenda information, every individual detailed lesson plan and accompanying handouts
o School Organization information:- timetables, class lists, lunchroom/hall/yard duty schedules, calendars, meetings
o Student Information (CONFIDENTIAL): - a variety of student assessments, anecdotal notes and observations, rubrics, checklists, marks

Active Observation:- may use Active Observation LOGBOOK- organize this section in your Organizational Binder to reflect your ongoing focused observations in the classroom and in the school, teaching/learning information, reflections, talking points from debriefing notes with Associate Teacher
Resources:-examples of instructional and assessment strategies, curriculum resources, online support and websites, professional resources
