About the Logo

Prepareathon™ is a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) program designed to motivate people and communities to take action to prepare for and protect themselves against disasters. Organizations and communities conduct Prepareathon events to encourage participants to take specific actions that will help protect them from the disasters most likely to affect them and their community. The goal of the Prepareathon program is to build a more secure and resilient Nation by increasing the number of individuals who understand which disasters could happen in their community and practice the preparedness actions they need to take to protect themselves.

The Prepareathon logo is a graphic mark designed to aid public recognition and to provide consistency for the purposes of communication and promotion.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), through FEMA, owns the Prepareathon trademark. As the owner, DHS has the legal responsibility to maintain the credibility and integrity of the Prepareathon logo from any intentionally misleading purpose or misguided use. FEMA encourages communities, organizations, and other stakeholders to customize the Prepareathon logo when hosting events to demonstrate local ownership. Customizing the logo offers the following benefits:

■ Provides a recognizable name to support promotion to participants ■ Connects a community or organization with other Prepareathon events across the country

These Prepareathon Logo Usage Guidelines explain the elements of the logo, basic specifications for reproduction, and proper use and customization of the Prepareathon logo.

These guidelines must be adhered to at all times and any misuse will be documented and addressed.

By registering your event online and acknowledging that you have read and agree with the Prepareathon™ Consent to Use Agreement, FEMA will provide the requested logo. Correct Use of the Logo

Logo Size To ensure that the logo is legible and recognizable, the logo should be displayed at a size no smaller than 2 inches wide for print materials, and 170 pixels wide for web, screen, or social media use.

There is no limit on how large the logo can be. The size will be different for each creative product and will largely depend on the purpose and goal of that item. For example, the logo will need to be larger on posters than on flyers. Some examples are below.

■ Flyer, 8.5 x 11 (U.S. Letter), logo size: 3” wide ■ Poster, 24 x 36, logo size: 9” wide

Logo Color For logos in full color, use the following colors:

For four-color process printing, refer to the CMYK values shown above. Please ensure that your printing colors match the colors identified on the chart as closely as possible.

For on-screen applications, refer to the RGB values specified above.

5

Additional Logo Variations The preferred style of the Prepareathon logo is full color. Logo artwork is available in four-color process (CMYK) and RGB web versions. Black and white, reverse, and grayscale versions are also available (see below for examples).

Clear Space Clear space helps focus sight on the logo as opposed to around the logo. Competing graphic and page elements—such as text, photography, or background patterns—can divert attention away from the logos.

To determine the amount of clear space to use around the Prepareathon logo, refer to the logo example immediately below and follow these steps:

■ Determine the final size of the Prepareathon logo that is being used.

■ Identify the amount of clear space to use around the logo by using the height of the “P” in Prepareathon.

6

Backgrounds A white background provides the logos with a clean, crisp contrast. If using a color variation of the logo, ensure that the background colors provide proper contrast.

Rotation and Orientation The logo must always be oriented horizontally.

Logo Misuses Incorrect use of the Prepareathon logo can compromise the integrity, effectiveness, and public recognition of the brand. To ensure accurate and consistent reproduction of the logos, always use the approved digital artwork. Never alter, add to, or re-create the Prepareathon logo other than by proper customization where appropriate. Several examples of logo misuse are provided below.

Customizing the Logo

The Prepareathon program allows for limited customization of the Prepareathon logo to achieve local ownership for promotion while providing consistency of communications. The logo includes standard elements that cannot be changed, which ensures a uniform brand. Licensees can customize the logo by including the organization’s name in the designated area. Recognizing that communities across the Nation are affected by various hazards, Prepareathon offers several hazard-specific options available on the Prepareathon section of ready.gov.

Customizing the Prepareathon logo must be done with care and precision. Consistent reproduction across all types of applications—print materials, presentations, advertisements, websites, exhibits, and even stationery—will reinforce the mission and result in a greater awareness of the Prepareathon program.

The following explains the basic specifications for customized reproduction, including color and size requirements. Examples of unacceptable applications of this identity system have also been included. Please use these guidelines and the approved digital artwork when customizing and reproducing the Prepareathon logo.

Customizable Logos The only portion of these logos that is customizable is the space above “Prepareathon,” where an entity may insert the state, community, or organization name.

Choose the appropriate logo or hazard-specific logo and type in the appropriate entity name. Here are some examples:

■ Flyer, 8.5 x 11 (U.S. Letter) logo size: 3” wide ■ Poster, 24 x 36 logo size: 9” wide
