Preparation to Hear the Dharma BY REV. HARRY GYOKYO BRIDGE
FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS, I have been reflecting on what
happened to me in my life that helped
lead me to become Buddhist. As I have
said before, I was not raised Buddhist
– my father was a “nominal Christian”
(as in, Christian in name only), but my
mother had converted to Seventh Day
Adventism when she was in high school
in Japan. However, there wasn’t a church
nearby in Massachusetts or Tokyo, so
my upbringing was largely areligious –
in other words, religion just wasn’t part
of my upbringing.
But recently I have identified a
couple of things that happened to me
that may have prepared me to hear the
Dharma. This morning I remembered
an incident in junior high school, soon
after we moved to Japan. We were
coming out of class, and my friend said
something like, “Harry, why are you
being so obnoxious? Don’t you realize
people don’t like you when you’re like
that?” I remember it so clearly. I don’t
remember what I was doing that was

I AM EXCITED TO BE WRITING this, my first Busshin article as your
church president for 2019. I would first
like to thank both Jon Takagaki and
Steve Terusaki for going above and
beyond their own time as presidents
by also taking on the responsibility of
being co-presidents for the past two
years. We are very lucky to have such
wonderful and dedicated members,
and I am looking forward to learning
from them as I transition into this
position.
I am honored to accept this
position, to show my appreciation
and support of this sangha and the
teachings of the Dharma. I am so
grateful for Reverend Dr. Seigen
Yamaoka, Reverend Harry Gyokyo
Bridge, and Reverend Michael Endo
and the BCO sangha for helping June
and I raise our two daughters, Kiyomi
and Mayumi. The girls have seen how

WISHING EVERYONE A HAPPY New Year, 2019! Now that the
excitement of the holidays has come
and gone, back to the basics of
everyday living.
Due to inclement weather
conditions, the January 17th meet was
cancelled but we will be meeting on
Thursday, February 7th per usual. We
do hope to see everyone at this meet
and anyone wishing to joining the
group is most welcome.
We have had a busy, active
past year. Many thanks to all the
participants. We hope to plan another
exciting year and if anyone has any
suggestions, please bring your ideas
to the meet.
At this time we wish to extend
our gratitude to Mary Hiromoto
and Gloria Fujimoto for their very
generous monetary donations to
the Momiji kai. Thank you very much
ladies for your generosity. n
LEAGUE GAMES ARE WINDING DOWN FOR THE YOUTH Club. Thank you for coming out to support our teams.
The Youth Club was treated to a special service in their
honor on Sunday, January 27. All of the teams, coaches and
parents were invited. Britinee Yasukochi, assistant coach for
the Cal State East Bay Womens’ basketball team was our guest
speaker. She spoke about kaizen, which means continuous
improvement. Coach Britinee also described her motivation to
give back to her community by speaking to young basketball
players. The youth club members learned a lot through Coach
Britinee’s inspirational message. Thank you to Roger Lee for
coordinating this memorable event. And of course, thank you
to Coach Britinee! n

DHARMA SCHOOL IS PROUD TO announce 2 new Dharma School
students, Mia and Noemi Nguyen. Mia
is in the 4th grade and Noemi is in TK.
Their parents are Karen Ishimaru and
Tin Yin. Welcome to Dharma School!
Happy BirthdayUpcoming March birthdays include,
Brandon Chue, Madison Ikeda, Jordan
Kim, Bryant Lee, and David Medina.
Happy birthday!
Our Dharma School students also
enjoyed a lesson on January 20th
created by Grant Ikeda and presented
by the Jr. YBA. They read the traditional
Japanese story “The Rolling Rice
Cakes”, tied it into a discussion about
Gratitude then helped the students
make a mouse to take home. n

MARCH 20193
THE JR. YBA STARTED THE YEAR off on January 13th when Grant Ikeda
created a lesson and craft for the
Dharma School that was presented
by the Jr. YBA. Glenn Kamita read the
short story “The Rolling Rice-cakes,”
from the book “Kintaro’s Adventures
and Other Japanese Children’s
Stories.” The story was about an
elderly man who lost his rice cakes
and decided to let the mice that
found them, eat them. In return, the
mice gave him a bag of infinite rice to
show their thanks and gratitude. The
discussion centered around gratitude
and the phrase “what goes around,
comes around. We finished with each
student making their own mouse to
take home.
In January, some of us attended
the Bay District Winter Activity. The
activity this year was at Laser Quest
in San Mateo. This was extremely fun
because we got to play laser tag with
our friends from other churches in the
Bay District. Following the activity,
Bryant Lee and Grant Ikeda attended
the Bay District meeting. We would
like to thank Karla and Roger Lee for
providing transportation and to the
San Mateo Buddhist Church for hosting
the meeting and for providing lunch.
Upcoming news! The Jr. YBA will
be having their annual udon fundraiser
on March 3rd. Ticket prices are $7.00
for children and Kerokai members, and
$10.00 for adults. We will be selling
tickets at church before and after
service. On the go right after service
and can’t stay for lunch? No worries!
We have orders to go as well!
To finish off this month, we will
be attending the Coast District Young
Buddhist League Conference the
weekend of March 16th, at the San Jose
Buddhist Church. This year’s theme is
“Moana - Who Are You Meant to be?”
We are looking forward to attending!. n

obnoxious, maybe just being loud and
excited to be out of class. But all of
a sudden, I was shown an aspect of
myself that I hadn’t been aware of.
I think my friend was just trying to
help, but I remember his words really
hitting me. I don’t think I was mad at
him, in fact, I remember strongly not
being mad. Instead, I took his words to
heart. I was being shown an aspect of
myself and the impact it had on others.
But I was only 11! Some people might
resist or even get angry, or feel even
more strongly that no one could tell
them what to do. But I turned inwards.
I think it made me more self-conscious,
but not necessarily in a good way.
Perhaps a more positive response
would have been to try and be more
aware of the way my behavior affected
others, but I kind of shut down so as
not to bother others rather than be
myself and temper my behavior when
the occasion demanded.
Maybe if Buddhism had been a
part of my life, I would have been able
to face this challenge more positively.
But maybe this is something I had to
go through to prepare me to hear the
Dharma ten years later. “Who am I?”
“What is the self?” “What is the life
about?” These are important questions
that Buddhism tries to help us answer,
but it can be hard to realize that the
questions are being asked, let alone
what the answers are. I hope that
coming to temple, either as a Dharma
School student or as an adult, allows
others to be able to hear the Dharma
as well, so that they – we – can begin
to ponder these questions as we live
our lives. n

come all members and friends of the BCO to be part of a Host Group, so feel free to invite your children and extended

hard members work and have learned
from them and those that have
passed away to become Buddhas.
I too have benefitted in the same
respect through my relationships
with the Issei and Nisei members.
Because this church has such a big
impact on my life, I would like to
make sure that BCO can also have
the same impact on others.
On January 27th, we were
fortunate to have guest speaker,
Britinee Yasukoshi, the assistant
coach for the CSU East Bay
women’s basketball team speak to
the sangha during the Youth Club/
Family Dharma Service. She gave
an inspirational talk and used a term
that stuck with me, the term “kaizen.”
She used this term in her message
to us when she spoke about her
time playing for church youth club
basketball and how it incorporated
into the job that she has now. That
term, “kaizen,” meaning continuous
improvement, is what my goal - with
the help of Sensei, the office staff,
the board, and the sangha - is in my
term as president and as a member
of this sangha. Thank you and I look
forward to this new year. n

THE BCO DHARMA SCHOOL IS continuing to work on a project to
identify BCO members that are active
military or veterans. We would like
to learn about where and when they
have served or are currently serving.
We would also like to recognize
these members for their service with
a specially designed shikisho. The
beautiful red, white, and blue shikisho
was designed by Minister’s Assistants
at the Las Vegas Sangha. A story about
the inspiration behind the design of
the shikisho is found in the October
2018 Wheel of Dharma Newsletter (on
page 4). Thank you very much to those
that have already us information.
We currently have a list of 16 BCO
members that are veterans including:
Fusako Joan Aochi (Women’s
Army Corps, WACS – Korea), Yasuhiko
“Yas” Aoki (Korea), Harry Bergland,
Don Kaneshige, Albert Kanzaki, Gary
Kawabata, Gary Lawrence (Vietnam),
John Minamoto, Mits Nakayama,
James Nishi, Makoto Otsuka, Robert
Oto, Dick “Digger” Sasaki, Yasuo “Yas”
Shimada, Tom Yokomizo, Isamu “Sam”
Yoneyama, and Saburo Yoshida.
If you are currently active military
or a veteran or know of such a member
that is not listed above, can you please
inform the BCO Office (officebco@
gmail.com or 510-832-5988) or Shuji
Glenn Kamita (sgkman10@gmail.
com)? The Dharma School Students
look forward to learning more about
our military service members and their
special stories. We also look forward
to presenting them with a “veterans
shikisho” during a Dharma School
service in May 2019. n

ON SUNDAY, APRIL 7, 2019 we will be observing our annual
Hanamatsuri Service, commemorating
the birth of the historical Buddha
Shakyamuni. The guest speaker for
the service will be Rev. Kodo Umezu,
Bishop of the Buddhist Churches
of America (and former resident
minister of the Buddhist Church of
Oakland).
In conjunction with our
Hanamtsuri Service, we will also be
conducting the Kieshiki Affirmation
Ceremony.
In our Jodo Shinshu Buddhist
tradition, the Kieshiki Affiramtion
Ceremony is performed before the
altar of Amida Buddha and Shinran
Shonin by the Bishop of the BCA. It is
an important step in affirming one’s
reverence for the Buddha, Dharma,
and Sangha, and their determination
to live a life guided by the Buddha’s
teachings.
By participating in the Affirmation
Ceremony, one receives a Buddhist
name (homyo). These names are in
the form of Shaku and two Buddhist
terms which follow. The word “Shaku”
means “disciple of Sakyamuni” and
signifies that the person has joined
the followers of the teachings of
Sakyamuni Buddha, a community
that transcends race or nationality.
The Affirmation Ceremony shares
a common and special meaning with
the precept of the three refuges
administered in the time of Sakyamuni
Buddha. In the Affirmation Ceremony,
the Buddha of the three refuges is
not simply Sakyamuni, but refers
especially to Amida Buddha, who is
the heart of Sakyamuni’s teachings.
Sakyamuni came into the world to
teach the Vow of Amida Buddha,
and our salvation brought about
by Amida. Thus, “Dharma” is the
teaching of Amida’s compassionate
working to save all beings, and
“Sangha” refers to people who have
entrusted themselves to Amida.
If you wish to receive your
Buddhist name (homyo) through
the Kieshiki Affirmation Ceremony,
please complete the application form
(found in this Busshin) and return it
to the BCO office by March 15 along
with your application fee of $35
(check made payable to the Buddhist
Church of Oakland).
If you have any questions, please
contact the office at (510) 832-5988
or at [email protected]. n
