As the temperature rises, it’s time to rid your skin of the last vestiges of winter and bring forth a spring rejuvenation on your face with a chemical peel. Chemical peels are a wonderful way to eliminate dead skin cells through removing the outer layers of skin that have been damaged by sun, acne, age, wrinkles, or pigmentation. Removing this damaged tissue reveals fresh new skin beneath, allowing you to put your best face forward. Chemical peels can be customized for your individual skin issues, and can help treat everything from fine lines to acne scars. Cosmetic dermatology procedures have long been thought to be mainly the domain of women. While women still make up the majority, the number of men having cosmetic procedures has been rising steadily for the past few years.

According to the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, in 2015 over 1 million men received cosmetic procedures such as Botox® and Dysport®. Men tend to prefer subtle, natural treatments that leave them looking masculine, more youthful, fit, and professional. For example, removing brown spots or broken blood vessels helps men look healthier and more groomed.

Popular laser treatments for men include photodynamic therapy, which addresses precancerous lesions as well as reducing redness. IPL can also be used to reduce rosacea, and pulsed dye lasers such as V-beam are great for reducing broken capillaries around the nose, which are common in many men.

In addition to laser treatments, Botox, Dysport and dermal fillers are popular among working men in an increasingly youth-dominated workforce. Botox and Dysport can smooth wrinkles just enough to

lend that youthful edge, while still retaining a few wrinkles for a natural look. Fillers can be used to create a square jawline for a more masculine look or to smooth the forehead or under eye area to look rested and youthful.

If there is fat under the chin, it can give a bloated, unhealthy appearance. Treatment of the neck with Kybella® injections, ThermiRF®, CoolSculpting® Mini or liposuction can take years off one’s appearance with very little down time and no telltale scars.

Wedding season is almost here, and that means if you have a wedding coming up it’s time to start thinking about how to look your best on the big day.

Many cosmetic procedures should be done weeks to months ahead of time to ensure that everything is perfect on the day of the wedding, so we’ve put together a guide to cosmetic procedures and when they should be done for the bride, groom, bridal party, and mother of the bride.

Botox® and Dysport®: Reduce forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and frown lines so your face will be smooth and youthful for photos on the big day. Botox takes about 2 weeks to fully kick in.

IPL: IPL helps to reduce dark spots and sun damage, creating a brighter, fresher complexion. Requires about 3 treatments for full effect, so plan to start these anywhere from 3 to 6 months before the wedding day.

Dermal fillers: Fillers restore lost volume and help smooth nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Perfect for the mother of the bride to look great in front of the whole family. Plan to have HA fillers such as Voluma® done at least 2 weeks beforehand, while collagen building fillers such as Radiesse® should be done at least 4 months before.

One of the most common questions I get from patients is when they should start doing preventative procedures. People worry about starting too soon or too late, but the reality is that we start aging the moment we’re born. Even babies should be protected from UV damage with protective clothing, hats and mineral-based sunblocks.

Teenagers often suffer from acne, so starting topical retinoids not only helps their acne, but has the preventative benefit of stimulating collagen, as well. At this age, starting photofacials or IPLs not only will help one’s acne, but studies have shown that after just 3 IPL treatments gene expression of aged skin changed to resemble that of younger skin. It’s not just the skin that’s aging.

Facial bone loss has been found to start at the age of 25 in women, and women over 35 have significantly less bone than younger women. In addition, bone loss exponentially increases with menopause as a result of a decrease in estrogen. With less bone, facial muscles are trying to contract onto bone that is no longer there, which results in the appearance of frown lines, forehead

lines, and crows feet. These lines start off with expressions, and with time progress to being deep lines noticeable at rest, at which time neuromodulators such as Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® may be too late to be fully effective.

For this reason, patients as early as their late 20’s can consider preventative measures such as neuromodulators. Remember, it’s never too early to speak to your board-certified dermatologist to see what you can be doing to anti-age.

POPULAR PRE-WEDDING PROCEDURES

for Bride and Groom Here at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, we are committed to bringing you the very latest technologies for skin rejuvenation, anti-aging, and more. In this pursuit, we continue to be on the forefront of dermatologic innovations. One of the most recent of those innovations is Silhouette InstaLift®, which was just recently FDA approved for use in America after having been used in Europe for years.

We are one of the first practices to offer Silhouette InstaLift in America for our patients wanting a 30-minute procedure that provides instant lift as well as an ongoing regenerative effect! Silhouette InstaLift can dramatically redefine facial contour, smooth wrinkles, and restore volume, all in a minimally invasive procedure with little downtime.

We are also currently conducting a number of research trials for innovative and exciting advancements in the field of cosmetic dermatology, including the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, cellulite and photodamage. Non-surgical cosmetic treatments continue to advance as safe and effective procedures, and more and more people

are choosing them over invasive, surgical procedures. More than 13.9 million non-surgical procedures were performed in 2014, and that number continues to grow.

As dermatologic and cosmetic surgeons, we are proud to bring these cutting-edge technologies to the general public to help both men and women look and feel their best without needing to go under the knife. Please call our research center to see if you qualify for a clinical study.

“Dramatically redefine facial

contour, smooth wrinkles, and

restore volume!”

“The number of men having cosmetic procedures has

been rising steadily for the past few years.”

“It’s never too early to speak to your board-

certified dermatologist about anti-aging.”

Liposuction is consistently ranked among the most popular cosmetic procedures in America. However, many people don’t know exactly what liposuction entails and may be intimidated by the thought of it. There’s no reason to be intimidated, though - liposuction is a very safe and highly effective procedure that has been practiced and perfected for decades.

The tumescent liposuction method uses only local anesthesia, which is safer than general anesthesia

with fewer side effects. After the procedure, patients are free to return home without staying overnight in a hospital, and the recovery time generally lasts just a few days, after which patients can return to work.

The way liposuction works is by extracting subcutaneous fat through a small cannula. It is not a weight loss procedure, but patients can achieve a better body contour that gives the impression of having lost weight.

Many patients find that after a liposuction procedure their clothes fit better and they feel better about their appearance.

Liposuction cannot remove visceral fat, however. The only way to reduce visceral fat around the organs is to lose weight through diet and exercise. In fact, the best liposuction candidates are people who can maintain a healthy, stable weight but who have areas of stubborn fat that won’t budge despite a healthy lifestyle.
