Foreword
This Part of this European Standard has been prepared by SC2 'Prestressing steels' of the Technical
Committee ECISS/TC 19 'Concrete reinforcing and prestressing steels - Properties, dimensions,tolerances and specific tests' of which the Secretariat is held by BSI.
This European Standard has been prepared under mandate M115 given to CEN by the EuropeanCommission and the European Free Trade Association and supports essential requirements of theEU Construction Products Directive (89/106/EEC).
For relationship with the EU Construction Products Directive, see informative annex ZA, which is anintegral part of Part 1 of this European Standard and by which it becomes a harmonized EuropeanStandard.
EN 10138 is published in four parts, the other parts being:
EN 10138-1, Prestressing steels Part 1: General requirements
EN 10138-2, Prestressing steels Part 2: Wire
EN 10138-4, Prestressing steels Part 4: Bars
All products placed on the market within the European Union and EFTA must be certificated inaccordance with annex ZA of Part 1 of this European Standard.
In accordance with the common rules of CEN/CENELEC the following member countries are obligedto adopt this standard: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, United Kingdom.

1 Scope
This Part of this European Standard gives specific requirements for high tensile steel wire strandwhich has been given a stress relieving heat treatment.
It is applicable to strands of the following types:
a) 3-wire strand;
b) indented 3-wire strand;
c) 7-wire strand;
d) indented 7-wire strand;
e) 7-wire compacted strand.
NOTE General requirements are given in Part 1 of this European Standard.
2 Normative references
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constituteprovisions of this European Standard. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of,any of these publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this EuropeanStandard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of thenormative documents indicated below. For undated references, the latest editions of the normativedocument referred to applies. Members of CEN/CENELEC maintain registers of currently valid EuropeanStandards.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this Part of this European Standard the terms and definitions given inprEN 10183-1 and the following apply.
3.1unit of productproduct of one coil as delivered to the customer
3.2test unitunits of product coming from one set of coils in the stranding machine
4 Designation
4.1 For the steel grades covered by this Part of this European Standard the steel names shall beallocated in accordance with EN 10027-1 and CR 10260; the steel numbers shall be allocated inaccordance with EN 10027-2.
4.2 The designation shall consist of:
a) the number of this Part of this European Standard;
b) the steel name consisting of:
1) the letter Y for prestressing steel;
2) the nominal tensile strength in MPa;
3) the letter S for strand;
4) the number 3 or 7 to indicate the number of wires in the strand;
5) where appropriate, the letter G to indicate compacted strand;
c) the nominal diameter of the strand in mm;

5 Manufacture
5.1 General
The strand shall be manufactured from wire produced from wire rod conforming to EN 10016-4 andfrom steel in accordance with prEN 10138-1:2000, 6.1.
5.2 Stranding process
5.2.1 3-wire strand
The strand shall consist of three wires of the same nominal diameter, spun together in helical formover a theoretical common axis with a lay length of 14 to 22 times the nominal strand diameter.
5.2.2 7-wire strand
The diameter of the straight central wire shall be at least 2,0 % greater than the diameter of the outerhelical wires. The latter shall be tightly spun around the centre wire with a lay length of between 14and 18 times the nominal strand diameter.

Page 7prEN 10138-3:2000
5.2.3 7-wire compacted strand
When stranding and compacting are carried out simultaneously, the straight central wire shall be atleast the same diameter as the outer helical wires. The latter shall have a lay length of 14 to 18 times
the nominal strand diameter.
5.3 Welds
The normal production lengths may contain welds made in the individual wires before drawing, butshall not contain any welds made during or after drawing.
5.4 Indented strand
The indented wires of 3-wire strand or the indented outer wires of 7-wire strand shall be indentedbefore stranding.
NOTE 1 The centre wire of 7-wire strand is normally plain.
The dimensions of the indentation shall be in accordance with Table 1 and Figure 1 of this Part of thisEuropean Standard. One line of indentations shall be at a contrary angle to the others.
NOTE 2 Alternative methods may be used to improve the bond between strand and concrete.

A test unit shall be deemed to conform to the requirements of this Part of this European Standard if allthe results are greater than or equal to the specified value for the mechanical properties (exceptmaximum value of maximum force) and within the tolerances for the maximum force and thegeometrical properties.
If this condition is not met, the following procedure shall be applied :
1) when the result for the maximum force or 0,1 % proof force is lower than the specified value, twoadditional samples shall be taken from two units of product of the same test unit other than the oneinitially tested.
These samples shall be submitted to tensile tests. The mean value of the three individual results shallbe calculated.
The test unit shall be deemed to conform to the requirements of this Part of this European Standard ifthis mean value is greater than or equal to the specified value.
Otherwise, the test unit shall be rejected and the manufacturer shall immediately take the measures torectify the fault.

2) when results for properties specified by a minimum and/or a maximum value do not conform to therequirements, two additional samples shall be taken from the test unit concerned by each failed result.
If the two additional results conform to the requirements, the unit of product shall be deemed to
comply with the requirements of this Part of this European Standard and no further check is needed.
If at least one of the two additional results does not conform to the specifications, the concerned unitof product shall be rejected and all the units of product from the test unit shall be tested for thedefective property(ies).
All units of product with non conforming results shall be rejected and the manufacturer shallimmediately take the measures to rectify the fault.

The test methods shall be in accordance with prEN ISO 15630-3.
9 Delivery conditions
9.1 Identification
The requirements in prEN 10138-1:2000, 9.1 shall be met.
9.2 Delivery documentation
The requirements in prEN 10138-1:2000, 9.2 shall be met.
9.3 Dimensions of unit of product
The dimensions of the unit of product shall be agreed at the time of ordering between the purchaserand the producer consistent with the restrictions in prEN 10138-1:2000, 9.3. The producer shall statethe coil dimensions.
9.4 Packaging and handling
The internal diameter of the coil shall be not less than 50 times the strand diameter of 7-wire strand,or 75 times the strand diameter of 3-wire strand.

Note on classes of convenience
Table 2 of this Part of this European Standard gives examples of classes of convenience of productsmanufactured by various countries within the EU. Other sizes not contained in this table may beoffered for approval under the CPD provided that volume manufacture of these sizes already existswithin an EU country and the general rules as indicated in notes a to f of Table 2 of this Part of thisEuropean Standard are applied. The properties and special properties of these additional sizes orclasses of convenience shall be consistent with those required for nominated classes and size rangesin Tables 2 and 3 of this Part of this European Standard.

Annex B(informative)
Note on new higher tensile strand sizes for future development
It is apparent that new higher tensile ranges are currently under development by a number ofmanufacturers. It is proposed that these may be included as non aligned parts in this Part of thisEuropean Standard with the intention of their inclusion as fully integrated parts with full technicalapproval in future issues of the standard. For formulation of the new product properties the generalrules as indicated in notes a to f of Table 2 of this Part of this European Standard are applied. Theproperties and special properties of these additional new sizes in classes of convenience shall beconsistent with the properties required for existing nominated classes and size ranges in Tables 2 and3 of this Part of this European standard.
