Nationwide, we celebrate Memorial Day in May,

Independence Day in July, and Veterans’ Day in November. The one common denominator

for all these celebrations is our flag—the Star-Spangled

Banner; the Stars and Stripes; the Grand Old Flag; the Red, White, and Blue. From the time we were little boys and girls, together we recited the “Pledge of Allegiance.” We still do in most public gatherings.

Regardless of whether you served in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force or Coast Guard, our flag is the one thing that binds us together. On Wednesday, May 19th, we will honor those who served this flag and the families who supported them in their line of duty. We are proud to have 17 veterans who will be honored and their photos showcased on our new Wall of Honor displays. Bruce Andrews will host the event and offer a stirring performance honoring our Veterans. Our local Veterans of Foreign Wars post will have representatives here as well.

Fitness Center, Resident Council ElectionsWe are excited to announce our new Boca

Fitness Center in our community will open in late May. The New Boca Fitness Center will offer residents an opportunity to work out every day with high-quality equipment, in a friendly environment. We make it easy for our Residents to exercise whenever and however they like. The gym will always be clean and well maintained, featuring a treadmill, stationary bike, press machine and free weights. We have personal trainers, from Ageility, available to help you learn how to use all of the equipment and to develop an individualized workout plan, if you like. We are very excited about our planned grand opening celebration. Keep an eye out for our grand opening date!

It’s election time again for our Resident Council. The Resident Council serves to be an advisory and

collaborative body working with Administration to enhance operations for the community. I am excited this year that we have several residents stepping forward wishing to serve on the board. The more actively involved everyone becomes, the better our community becomes. Independent Living elections will be held on Wednesday, May 3rd, from 10:00 a.m. to noon in the Lobby, so be sure to get out and vote!

A few residents have asked about making a contribution to the Boca Raton Symposium so they can continue their outreach to the community. Contributions can be made by check to “The Healing Sounds of Music.” You may drop off your donation to Sami Bryant in the LS360 office. All contributions are tax deductible and appreciated.

Have a great month!

Exercise and the BrainExercise helps memory and thinking through

both direct and indirect means. The benefits of exercise come directly from its ability to reduce insulin resistance, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the release of growth factors—chemicals in the brain that affect the health of brain cells, the growth of new blood vessels in the brain and even the

abundance and survival of new brain cells. Indirectly, exercise improves mood and

sleep, and reduces stress and anxiety. Problems in these areas frequently cause or contribute to cognitive impairment.

Put it to the test and start exercising! It is recommended to do 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week, or 150 minutes per week. If you attend exercise class, Monday through Thursday and Watercise on Friday, you will have met the 150 minutes. You can also join the Saturday Strutters and go for a 30-minute walk.

Give it a try and see how much more energy you have and how much better you feel! Please check your calendars for time and location of exercise programs.

Lots of Exercise Opportunities HereFive Star Premier Residences is focused on

a holistic approach to wellness and resident engagement. Each week, there are a wide array of ways for you to engage in exercise activity.

Lectures and DiscussionsPhil Leto Thursdays, May 6th and 20th 1:00 p.m. — IL AUD

“Why Can’t We All Just Get Along?” There are currently many parts of the world where long-simmering tensions between neighboring countries threaten the peace and security of their region. As the United States and China are now apt to pick sides, the risk of broader hostilities becomes greater. The causes of these animosities range from incompatibilities of ideology, nationality, race and/or religion, aggravated by botched decolonization and the haphazard creation of new states following the great wars of the twentieth century. These aggressions are often compounded by the unrealistic ambitions of a country to create or reconstruct former spheres of influence.

Each month, as we examine one of these combustible regions, we will first describe the nature of the regional tensions that currently exist, with the following lecture recounting historical events, internal and external, that contributed to creating these now highly volatile powder kegs on the brink of explosion.

On Thursday, May 6th, Professor Leto will present “The Koreas and the Effect of a Rogue Nuclear State.” Born through its imperfect liberation from brutal Japanese control at the end of World War II, North and South Korea became an early front in the Cold War. They engaged in a bitter conflict, with allies that included the United States and China. Although the fighting ended by armistice in 1953, no formal treaty ending the conflict has been made.

Today, South Korea is a prosperous, highly-developed democratic state. North Korea, led by the third member of the ruling Kim family, Kim Jong Un, is a Stalinist, paranoid, nuclear-armed state. It nurses real and imagined grievances against its neighbors and toward the United States, whom it perceives as their protector and its ultimate enemy.

Leto’s second lecture, on Thursday, May 20th, is “Let the Cold War Begin.” The euphoria Americans felt at the end of World War II would be short-lived. Almost immediately, the Soviet Union, through various means, sought to dominate parts of Europe and Asia. Then, in August of 1948, the USSR detonated their first nuclear bomb and two months later Mao’s Communists prevailed in the Chinese Civil War.

At home a full blown anti-communist hysteria caused the FBI and committees in both houses of Congress to search for Communists in our midst. Soon, Alger Hiss, Klaus Fuchs and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg would be accused of being Soviet agents. The opportunistic Senator from Wisconsin, Joseph Mc McCarthy, would demagogue his way to great notoriety. Then, in June, 1950, war in Korea would bring the U.S., Soviet Union and Red China into direct and indirect conflict with each other.

Don’t miss Professor Leto’s live lectures! Sign up with the LS360 Department.

Mark Newman: Myster History Sunday, May 30th • 8:15 p.m. — IL AUD

In this timely live presentation, the History of Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day, will be presented with great detail by “Myster History,” aka Marc Newman. The period highlights the Civil War, when Northerners and Southerners created special ceremonies and commemorations, up to present day. He will explain how a local event became a national holiday, with the official name of Memorial Day, in 1967. Included will be a unique explanation of the “observation” of Memorial Day, the global legacies and highlights of the courage and service of special regiments. This program pays homage to the men and women who have served our nation with great courage. Sign up with the LS360 Department.

Paul Offenkrantz Mondays, May 10th and 24th 1:30 p.m. — IL AUD
