LEDs byFENCER 120V FIXTURE SERIESThe FENCER line of under-cabinet LED light fixtures provides a comprehensive family of dimmable fixtures for direct-wire installation. The FENCER product line is engineered to provide style, ease of installation, and years of maintenance-free lighting.

Two Popular ModelsFENCER fixtures come in two models: the SABER™ under cabinet fixture and the FOIL™ linear cove lighting fixture. Both models are designed to connect to 120V AC power via wall receptacle or direct to ROMEX® connection, ensuring a quick and easy installation for new or retrofit lighting projects. A durable aluminum housing coupled with frosted lenses protects and diffuses high-quality OSRAM SYLVANIA LED chips, creating a bright, warm white light output for task or linear lighting requirements.

Both FENCER models feature fixture-to-fixture accessories for seamless connections that eliminate the need for tedious hard wiring between fixtures. Using connector cables or the included End-to-End Connector, FENCER fixtures can be daisy-chained together up to forty (40) fixtures, delivering more than 100 feet of continuous lighting.

The SABER and FOIL are low-profile fixtures that offer a variety of lengths and finish options. These fixtures combine form and function to deliver attractive design with a high-quality light output, ideal for traditional or contemporary applications.

MATTONE is a standard brick-sized recessed fixture. The optional housing is constructed of die-cast zinc magnesium, designed with three knockouts, and seamlessly supports the fixture and faceplate. MATTONE is capable of handling 100-277V AC input, making it suitable for both commercial and residential applications. With both horizontal and vertical oriented faceplates, it can be used for interior and exterior wall, concrete, and brick/mortar applications. Three MATTONE faceplate cover options include a classic louvered vent, a directional shroud, and a smooth open lens that parallels the wall.

MATTONE MINI is a recessed fixture that fits perfectly into a 1-gang box and is capable of handling an input of 100-277V AC. Its smaller size makes it versatile enough for unlimited indoor/outdoor pathway applications. Five MATTONE MINI faceplate cover options include a classic horizontal or vertical louvered vent, a horizontal or vertical directed shroud, or a smooth lens that mounts parallel to the wall.

WET LOCATION LED STRIP LIGHTHYDROLUME™ is the only strip light that is waterproof, fully submersible, and UV resistant. It is constructed of UV-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials designed specifically to perform in extreme environments like saltwater and chlorine-treated water.

FLUID VIEW™ and BLAZE™ are available in wet-location versions for outdoor and wet-location lighting environments. Field cuttability is preserved for field alteration while maintaining the UL Listing for inspection. With the choice of a medium- or high-output brightness, these LED strip light solutions can be used as an ambient or close-proximity lighting source, task lighting, fill-light applications, or architectural highlighting when environments are exposed to water or where having a smooth, cleanable light source is desirable. LED Drivers convert 100V-277V AC power into low-voltage 12V DC or 24V DC power. The first step in choosing the correct LED driver is to determine the location of the installation and the dimming compatibility requirements. The following chart will help determine the recommended driver type.

UNDERSTANDING DRIVERS & DIMMING

Inspections Any LED lighting project that undergoes inspection will be evaluated on a number of factors. The power supply, wiring, and junction box may require Class 2 compliance and the lighting installed will need to be UL or ETL listed.

Class 2 Power SupplyThe National Electric Code (NEC) defines a Class 2 circuit as that portion of the wiring system between the load side of a Class 2 power supply (LED driver) and the connected equipment (LED Luminaire). A Class 2 compliant circuit is considered safe from fire initiation, and provides protection from electrical shock. LED drivers that comply with the Class 2 regulation must be labeled as “Class 2”. See the chart below for Class 2 limitations.

For 12V projects that exceed the 60W limit, you have two options: 1. Install several 12V 60W drivers to satisfy large wattage needs.2. Install a high-wattage multi-tap driver such as the Diode LED 12V -

300 Watt Class 2 Driver (DI-0965). This driver maintains its Class 2 rating by offering six separate 50W outputs.

Wiring and Junction BoxesNEC compliance requires Class 1 circuits (up to 600V) and Class 2 circuits to be separated within a junction box. Our LO-PRO™ Junction Box (DI-0980) is one example of how to separate high-voltage and low-voltage wiring within the same enclosure.

CORRELATED COLOR TEMPERATURE (CCT)

Color temperature is a characteristic associated with white light that has important applications in LED lighting. With previous generations of lighting technology, there was little choice in the color temperature of your lighting. With LED lighting, you now can choose the “right” light for any application.

Light producers are known as black body radiators (the Sun, fire, heated objects, etc.) and change hue as their temperature increases. This is described as its color temperature. Light sources such as LED lighting can be judged by their Correlated Color temperature (CCT).

The Kelvin (K) scale is used to measure the Correlated Color Temperature of white light. Light producers (the Sun, fire, heated objects) glow red at 1000K, yellow at 3000K, blue-white at 6000K, and intense blue at 10,000K. Scientifically, color emission temperatures are based on the apparent color of light producers heated to various temperatures on the scale.

Temperatures on the Kelvin scale are identified as “Kelvin” or “K”. The lower the Kelvin temperature value, the warmer the light. Candlelight is a very warm light and measures around 2000K. Color temperatures of 2400–3000K are called warm colors (yellowish white), while color temperatures over 5000K are called cool colors (bluish white). The mid-range color temperature falls around 4200K and is called neutral white. Diode LED products include Kelvin temperatures ranging from 2000K - 6500K, which are common temperatures for light applications.

CRI AND THE QUALITY OF LIGHTDiode LED continues to introduce higher Color Rendering Indexes (CRI) in its products. CRI is another important characteristic of a light source, which measures how accurately a light source renders colors of an object that it illuminates. The CRI rating measures the average appearance of eight standardized colors of intermediate saturation spread throughout the range of hues. It measures which wavelengths are missing from an artificial light when compared to a theoretically perfect light source (sunlight) that has a perfect CRI score of 100. The higher the CRI, the more even, accurate, rich, and deep the spectrum of light is emitted.

CRI can be important when selecting LED lighting for specific applications. This is because LED lights are a “discontinuous light source.” Light from the sun is a “continuous” spectrum because there are no gaps or missing colors. The colors spectrum progresses smoothly all the way from indigo to red. Our higher-CRI offering requires superior engineering that includes a high-quality phosphorus treatment to smooth out the spectrum to create a more accurate distribution of all colors.

In a nutshell, the higher-CRI rating of Diode LED solutions means that a more continuous light spectrum will be delivered with more of every possible wavelength of light. This produces more rich and vibrant colors across the full visible color spectrum. Diode LED offers differing form factors, brightness levels, dimming, a wider range of color temperature options, and higher CRI. Diode LED makes finding the “right light” easier than ever before.

How can voltage drop affect an LED lighting system? Voltage drop is defined as the amount of voltage loss that occurs through all or part of a circuit due to impedance. Wires and electrical components and virtually anything carrying current will always have inherent resistance, or impedance, to current flow.The importance of voltage drop for LED-based lighting is that an LED requires a minimum amount of current to properly light. Less than the minimum current can cause an LED to flicker, operate less brightly, or emit a different color than an LED that receives the proper amount of current. This is most often noticed in longer runs of LED tape light where the front end is receiving the correct current, and due to voltage drop, the LEDs in the tail end of the array receive less than the minimum. The result is a perceivable color or brightness difference in the LEDs on one end compared to the other. How can customers avoid voltage drop effects with Diode LED solutions? This may be best demonstrated with a specific example using AVENUE 24™ Premium Tape Light. The specifications show that AVENUE 24 can run up to 40 feet. Let’s make that work using the simple 1-2-3 steps below.

VOLTAGE DROP

1. First - Calculate the wattage required.The specifications state that AVENUE 24 Tape Light uses 2.09 Watts per foot. Diode LED tests the voltage drop within products and designates maximum runs. If you stay within the tested maximum run length, simply calculate the wattage per foot or per fixture to determine the proper driver capacity. The maximum run of 40 feet will require at least 83.6 Watts to properly power the AVENUE 24 tape light array. (2.09 Watts per foot x 40 feet = 83.6 Watts)

2. Second - Pick the correct driver by matching the fixture’s required voltage and required wattage from step 1 above.In this example, AVENUE 24 is a 24-volt product, so we will need to choose one of the Diode LED tested 24V drivers. We have already calculated the wattage required for a 40-foot array of AVENUE 24 tape light to be 83.6 watts. This would mean that a 24V driver with a 96-watt capacity is sufficient. The driver’s wattage rating in your system should always exceed the wattage of your load to ensure proper operation and safety.

3. Last – Identify proper wire gauge to run between the driver and LED luminaire. Diode LED products will work only as specified provided there is less than 3% drop in voltage between the driver and the LED lights. The degree of voltage drop is determined by four main factors: voltage input (12V or 24V), wire run length, wire gauge, and total fixture load used by the lighting (watts & amps).

An electrician or installer can use the chart below to determine the proper wire gauge for the installation. If in our example the driver is installed 20 feet from the tape light, the second chart shows that the correct wire gauge is 16 AWG.

How to use the wire gauge chart:1. Choose the chart based on a 12V or 24V driver. 2. Choose the wattage that matches your driver from the top

row. 3. Follow the column down from your wattage to the distance

between the driver and LED luminaire in your installation. 4. The far-left column will then show the wire gauge needed to

deliver current with less than 3% voltage drop.

GLOSSARY OF TERMSAlternating Current (AC): Electric power is generated and delivered to businesses and residences in a high-voltage alternating current (AC), in which the flow of electricity periodically reverses directions.

CRI (Color Rendering Index): A quantitative value that depicts the LED fixture’s ability to reproduce colors accurately compared to a natural light source (e.g., the Sun). With higher CRI, colors are rendered more accurate, rich, and deep.

Correlated Color Temperature (CCT): A quantifiable measure of both the hue in white light and where it falls on the color spectrum. If a white light fixture is more yellow in hue, it is considered “warm white.” If the hue is bluer, the light is considered “cool white.” Correlated Color Temperature is expressed using Kelvin (K) as the unit of measure for white light.

Class 2: The National Electric Code (NEC) defines a Class 2 circuit as that portion of the wiring system between the load side of a Class 2 power supply (LED driver) and the connected equipment (LED Luminaire). A Class 2 compliant circuit is considered safe from fire initiation, and provides protection from electrical shock. For more information, see pg. 90 of LED Drivers, Switches, Dimmers & Accessories.

Constant Voltage: Refers to a power supply that maintains a fixed voltage output regardless of current load.

Current (A): The flow of electric charge. In electric circuits, moving electrons in a wire often carry current. The unit used for measuring current is the “ampere (A),” or commonly used “amps.”

DC: Abbreviation for Direct Current, in which the flow of electric charge moves in only one direction.

DMX: Abbreviation for Digital Multiplex. DMX is a digital communication language used to control lighting and lighting effects. DMX allows users to synchronize and control multiple LED lights and color-changing LED lighting with a controller. Since DMX is a data signal and not an electrical signal, DMX installations can expand to multiple lighting areas or to layouts covering great distances.

Energy Star: To qualify for the ENERGY STAR label, an LED lamp must use up to 75% less energy and last at least 15 times longer than comparable incandescent lighting. The rating also denotes excellent color quality.

IP Rating: Abbreviation for Ingress Protection Rating, which classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against particle intrusion such as dust and water with a two-digit number. The first number (from 0 to 6) determines the protection rating against solid objects or materials, with a “6” indicating the most protection. The second number (from 0 to 8) determines the protection rating against the ingress of liquid/moisture, with an “8” indicating the most protection.

Kelvin (K): See Correlated Color Temperature (CCT).

LED: Abbreviation for Light Emitting Diode, which is a semiconductor light source sometimes referred to as solid-state lighting. LEDs are used in many devices and are increasingly used for general and commercial lighting.

Lumen (lm): The unit of measure for the brightness of a light, indicating the amount of light emitted.

Luminous Efficacy: The measure of how efficiently a light source produces light. The simplest way of configuring this is by determining the lumens per watt.

Luminous flux: In photometry, luminous flux or luminous power is the measure of the perceived power of light.

Nanometer (nm): Unit of length that is one-billionth of a meter. This value is associated with the wavelengths of light in the visible spectrum. A typical human eye will respond to wavelengths from about 390 to 700 nm, which are the colors of the rainbow.

RGB: (“Red, Green, Blue”) Full-color LED fixtures use Additive Color Mixing with combinations of these three color diodes to produce millions of colors.

RGBW: (“Red, Green, Blue, White”) Expanding upon RGB color mixing, the addition of white light enables a broader range of color combinations to include pastels as well as brighter light.

RoHS: Restriction on the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) places limits on hazardous heavy metals in electronic devices for environmental safety.

RU: The Recognized Component Mark is a type of quality mark issued by Underwriters Laboratories and is specifically used on components that when combined with other equipment can be used to create a UL recognized system.

SMD: Abbreviation for Surface Mount Device, a method for producing electronic circuits in which the components such as LEDs are mounted or placed directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Title 24: This certification meets code regulations designed to reduce energy consumption and enhance energy efficiency of buildings in California.

UL: This certification mark indicates that a product has been tested to, and has met, the minimum requirements for product safety, by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory, and that the manufacturing site is regularly audited.

Watt (W): A watt measures the rate of energy conversion or power used. LED fixtures consume power measured in watts.
