Preliminary TaskPreliminary TaskBy Bret Newman

Match on Action

Match on Action is where the camera is filming a person in action from different angles. It shows what is happening from different points of view, from the front in the left sided shot and from the back of the person in the right hand shot.

Shot/Reverse Shot

The shot reverse Shot if where two people are talking to one another and being filmed. The camera shot on the left shows the father talking to the son and you can only see the back of the fathers head. In the second shot it is the father again talking to the son but this time you can just see the back on the sons head.

180 Degree Rule

This is the 180 Degree Rule. These examples are used possibly in an interview where the camera only films one side of the two people and the other side in the next shot. You never see the other side of the 180 degree arch which is shown.

Learning/Practising

For one of our lessons we messed around with them. We realised that or footage was a bit out of focus and that the footage was completely useless. We also filmed random people and places as we were getting used to filming.

This process was a little slow and there was a lot of footage taken. This process was a great time to try out different angles and views for the films we created. It gave us more experience in the filming side to media.

Actors

The actors who will be starring in our preliminary task is Reece Taylor (pictured left) and myself, Bret Newman (pictured right)

With me and Reece starring in the piece, this then meant that Yasmin Wadsworth and Fay Sawyn will be doing the majority of the filming at different camera angles. Yasmin also had a cameo role in the films ending as one of our shots, a teacher walked in.

Locations

This was our initial locations for the filming process. The actual location we changed as it was a more practical one to use and we didn’t have the distractions. The new location is far better than this one as we had the new element of stairs.

Dialogue for preliminary task:

Reece walks down the corridor knocks at the door.Bret: (muffled) Come inReece walks in the roomReece: aye aye captain rogerBret: Hi shipmate Mac daddy, take a seat my loveReece: Can I join your crew captainBret: Yea mearty Reece: Thanks mateReece walks out of the room, down the corridor Bret pops his head out of the door and shoots Reece. Bret: (evil laugh)

Changes made to dialogue• The first change we made to the dialogue is when we walks up the

stairs instead of knocking on the door. We found that since there was no door, there wasn't a need for the line “Come In” after Reece knocks.

• The second part of the script we changed was the end of the speaking. We decided to add the line “No Problem, here take this!”, I then handed Reece a pass and he put in on.

• We also added in a cameo role from Yasmin, and she had one line which was “Oh Captain”, and this ended the Short Film. We did this because a teacher walked in on our filming so we had to cover up that mistake.

Evaluation 1. Does the Media product use Match-On-action, Shot reverse Shot, and

the 180 degree rule in ways that are similar to or different from “real” media examples? What are the Similarities / Differences and why have you done it this way?

Our short film uses all three of the above in a way that is clear to the viewer and in a way that is creative and unique. We used the shot reverse shot during the dialogue section of the film and most of the match on action was done in sequences lead up and down the stairs. We cut and cropped our footage a lot during the match on action segment of the film. This was to make sure that the film was smooth and no glitches in the final cut.I think our film was similar to the real life examples, this was due to the filming not being perfect as we are new to the filming side of media and also that the task was a short movie which was not to be taken too seriously. We added a little humour to the task also. This was just to make it seem a little funny and not too serious. Our story was of a captain hiring people to board his ship and to join his crew. Unknown to them that he kills them shortly after hiring them.

2. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt how to use a digital HD camera in the correct way and manor. Before doing this task i was only familiar with using the video recorder on my phone. This task has taught me how to use a proper camcorder and how to transfer the footage onto a computer in order to edit it.

The first time we used the cameras, we had a practise session in order to go around our school and figure out how to film things. The footage was pretty poor and none of it could be used in our preliminary task as it was pointless and was out of focus for the majority of the process.

Throughout filming different parts of the task, i found it easier to keep focus and to hold the camera still for precise shots. I also got use to using the camera in order to achieve certain angles needed for this task as well.

3. How will you use what you have learnt in the preliminary task in your main task?

I have learnt how to use a video recorder which is my main achievement throughout this task. I will obviously take this into doing my main task as i would be pretty pointless me doing it without the knowledge of working the media technology.

I have learnt how to film from different angles and also by using a tripod. I will further this in my next task by using these skills to film from weird locations and in weird positions to create a great effect.

I have also learnt that, by working as a team, you can get what needs to be done quicker. I will defiantly use this in my main task as its great to work as part of a team and share out the workload. This can be very difficult at times but I'm sure that my group can do a great job in this part of the main task.
