Pregnant women who get vaccinatedagainst influenza are less likely to havelow birth weight babies, according to astudy conducted in Bangladesh.

In this study, 340 pregnant womenwere randomly assigned to get either aflu vaccination or another vaccine.

If the period after vaccination did notinclude the flu season, the newbornbabies weighed about the same, regardless of which vaccines theirmothers received.

But study author Mark Steinhoff of theCincinnati, Ohio, Children's Hospitalsays that during influenza season, thewomen who got the flu vaccine camedown with the flu less than half asoften as the women who got the othervaccine, and their babies were born ata healthier weight.

"If the mother got the vaccine and wasexposed to influenza, the babiesweighted 200 grams more - 3.1 kilosversus 2.9 kilos. And that is asubstantial increase in birth weights,"says Steinhoff, noting that it is wellestablished that lower birth weights

    can have a lifetime impact.

"If there is a decreased birth weight inan otherwise healthy baby, the more itis decreased, the more likely thatinfant, as an adult, is likely to haveconditions such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease."

Steinhoff says he and his colleagues

were the first to identify this link between flu vaccination and birthweight, but four other studies havesince come up with the same findings.

Still, exactly why a mother sick withflu should have a smaller baby isunclear.

"But in general terms, if the pregnantwoman is sick with flu - that's anillness of a week, maybe eight days, 10days - the baby doesn't grow as wellduring that time and may end up beingborn slightly less well-nourished."

Steinhoff stresses that the influenzavaccine is safe for mother and baby, and is one of the few vaccines that apregnant woman can take that willprotect both her and her baby.
