Preface to Practice Standards 1

2

A profession’s practice standards serve as a guide for appropriate practice. The practice 3

standards define the practice and establish general criteria to determine compliance. Practice 4

standards are authoritative statements established by the profession for judging the quality of 5

practice, service and education provided by individuals who practice in medical imaging and 6

radiation therapy. 7

8

Practice standards can be used by individual facilities to develop job descriptions and practice 9

parameters. Those outside the imaging, therapeutic and radiation science community can use the 10

standards as an overview of the role and responsibilities of the individual as defined by the 11

profession. 12

13 The individual must be educationally prepared and clinically competent as a prerequisite to 14

professional practice. Federal and state laws, accreditation standards necessary to participate in 15

government programs and lawful institutional policies and procedures supersede these standards. 16

17 Format 18 19

The Practice Standards for Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy are divided into six sections: 20

introduction, scope of practice, clinical performance, quality performance, professional 21

performance and advisory opinion statements. 22

23

Introduction. The introduction provides definitions for the practice and the education and 24

certification for individuals in addition to an overview of the specific practice. 25

26

Scope of Practice. The scope of practice delineates the parameters of the specific 27

practice. 28

29

Clinical Performance Standards. The clinical performance standards define the activities 30

of the individual in the care of patients and delivery of diagnostic or therapeutic 31

procedures. The section incorporates patient assessment and management with procedural 32

analysis, performance and evaluation. 33

34

Quality Performance Standards. The quality performance standards define the activities 35

of the individual in the technical areas of performance including equipment and material 36

assessment, safety standards and total quality management. 37

38

Professional Performance Standards. The professional performance standards define the 39

activities of the individual in the areas of education, interpersonal relationships, self-40

assessment, and ethical behavior. 41

42

Advisory Opinion Statements. The advisory opinions are interpretations of the standards 43

intended for clarification and guidance for specific practice issues. 44

Each performance standards section is subdivided into individual standards. The standards are 1

numbered and followed by a term or set of terms that identify the standards, such as 2

“assessment” or “analysis/determination.” The next statement is the expected performance of the 3

individual when performing the procedure or treatment. A rationale statement follows and 4

explains why an individual should adhere to the particular standard of performance. 5

6

Criteria. Criteria are used in evaluating an individual’s performance. Each set is divided 7

into two parts: the general criteria and the specific criteria. Both criteria should be used 8

when evaluating performance. 9

10

General Criteria. General criteria are written in a style that applies to imaging and 11

radiation science individuals. These criteria are the same in all of the practice standards, 12

with the exception of limited x-ray machine operators, and should be used for the 13

appropriate area of practice. 14

15

Specific Criteria. Specific criteria meet the needs of the individuals in the various areas 16

of professional performance. While many areas of performance within imaging and 17

radiation sciences are similar, others are not. The specific criteria are drafted with these 18

differences in mind. 19

Introduction to Computed Tomography 1

Practice Standards 2

3 Definition 4 5 The practice of computed tomography is performed by a segment of health care professionals 6

responsible for the administration of ionizing radiation to humans for diagnostic, therapeutic, or 7

research purposes. A computed tomography technologist performs computed tomography 8

procedures and related techniques, producing sectional and three-dimensional images data at the 9

request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. ; assists with 10

interventional and therapeutic procedures and may perform fusion procedures. 11

12

The complex nature of disease processes involves multiple imaging modalities. Although an 13

interdisciplinary team of clinicians radiologists, computed tomography technologists and support 14

staff plays a critical role in the delivery of health services, it is the computed tomography 15

technologist who performs computed tomography procedures and reformats the computed 16

tomography examination data that creates the images needed for diagnosis and the performance 17

of interventional and therapeutic procedures. 18

19

Computed tomography integrates scientific knowledge, technical skills, patient interaction and 20

compassionate care resulting in diagnostic information. A computed tomography technologist 21

recognizes patient conditions, assesses and monitors patient vital signs, and takes appropriate 22

action in emergency situations essential for successful completion of the procedure. and to 23

maintain quality patient care. A computed tomography technologist exercises independent 24

professional and ethical judgment. 25

26

Computed tomography technologists must demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, 27

human physiology, pathology, pharmacology, computer technology, basic patient care and 28

assessment techniques, radiation physics, radiation biology, radiation protection and medical 29

terminology. They must maintain a high degree of accuracy in positioning and exposure 30

technique. They Computed Tomography technologists must possess, utilize and maintain 31

knowledge about radiation protection, and safety and current scanning protocols. Computed 32

tomography technologists prepare, administer and document activities related to medications and 33

radiation exposure in accordance with federal and state laws or lawful institutional policy. 34

35

Computed tomography technologists independently perform or assist the licensed independent 36

practitioner in the completion of diagnostic, therapeutic, interventional, and fusion computed 37

tomography procedures. Computed tomography technologists prepare, administer and document 38

activities related to, medications and radiation exposure in accordance with federal and state laws 39

or lawful institutional policy. 40

41

Computed tomography technologists are the primary liaison between patients, licensed 42

independent practitioners, and other members of the support team. Computed tomography 43

technologists must remain sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient through 44

good communication, patient assessment, patient monitoring and patient care skills. As members 45

Proposed Fall 2012Effective June 19, 2011

CT 4

of the health care team, computed tomography technologists participate in quality improvement 1

processes and continually assess their professional performance. 2

3

Computed tomography technologists think critically and use independent, professional and 4

ethical judgment in all aspects of their work. They engage in continuing education to include 5

their area of practice to enhance patient care, radiation safety, public education, knowledge and 6

technical competence. 7

8 Education and Certification 9 10

Computed tomography technologists prepare for their role on the interdisciplinary team by 11

successfully completing an accredited educational program in radiography, radiation therapy or 12

nuclear medicine technology. Two-year certificate, associate degree and four-year baccalaureate 13

degree programs exist throughout the United States. Accredited programs must meet specific 14

curricular and educational standards. and attaining appropriate primary certification by the 15

American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification 16

Board. Through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, individuals may apply to 17

take the national certification examination. 18

19

Upon completion of a course of study in radiography, radiation therapy or nuclear medicine 20

technology from an accredited program recognized by the American Registry of Radiologic 21

Technologists, individuals may apply to take the national certification examination. Those who 22

successfully complete the certification examination in radiography may use the credential 23

R.T.(R) following their name; the R.T. signifies registered technologist and the (R) indicates 24

radiography. Those who successfully complete the certification examination in radiation therapy 25

may use the credential R.T.(T) following their name; R.T. signifies registered technologist and 26

the (T) indicates radiation therapy. Those who successfully complete the certification 27

examination in nuclear medicine technology may use the credential R.T.(N) following their 28

name; the R.T signifies registered technologist and the (N) indicates nuclear medicine 29

technology. 30

31

The Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) also is a certifying agency. 32

Once the NMTCB determines an applicant is eligible for the examination, the applicant must 33

take the certification examination within the prescribed time period established by the NMTCB. 34

Those who successfully complete this certification examination may use the credential CNMT, 35

indicating certified nuclear medicine technologist. 36

37

Eligibility to take the postprimary examination in computed tomography requires registration in 38

radiography, nuclear medicine technology or radiation therapy appropriate primary certification 39

at the time of examination and documentation of clinical experience and any necessary 40

competencies in specific procedures. Those passing the computed tomography examination use 41

R.T.(CT). Certificates issued by the NMTCB are recognized as meeting the eligibility 42

requirements for computed tomography certification and continued computed tomography 43

registration through the ARRT. After successfully completing the computed tomography 44

postprimary examination, the credentials R.T.(R)(CT), R.T.(T)(CT), or R.T.(N)(CT) may be 45

used if registered by the ARRT and CNMT, R.T.(CT) ARRT if certified by the NMTCB. 46

47

Proposed Fall 2012Effective June 19, 2011

CT 5

To maintain ARRT postprimary certification, computed tomography technologists must 1

complete appropriate continuing education requirements to sustain a level of expertise and 2

awareness of changes and advances in practice. 3

4 Overview 5 6

An interdisciplinary team of radiologists, computed tomography technologists, radiographers and 7

other support staff plays a critical role in the delivery of health services as new modalities 8

emerge and the need for imaging procedures increases. A comprehensive procedure list for the 9

computed tomography technologist is impractical because clinical activities vary by practice 10

needs and expertise of the computed tomography technologist. As computed tomography 11

technologists gain more experience, knowledge and clinical competence, the clinical activities 12

for the computed tomography technologist may evolve. 13

14

State statute, regulation or lawful community custom may dictate practice parameters. Wherever 15

there is a conflict between these standards and state or local statutes or regulations, the state or 16

local statutes or regulations supersede these standards. A computed tomography technologist 17

should, within the boundaries of all applicable legal requirements and restrictions, exercise 18

individual thought, judgment and discretion in the performance of the procedure. 19 20
