A novel DehHX dehalogenase from P. halophila HX isolated from
hypersaline environments able to do pollutant degradation?
Fahrul Huyop
Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, 81310 UTM, Johor
Bahru, Malaysia.
Abstract. Sea dumping is prohibited by the Environment Protection (Sea Dumping) Act 1981.
Contamination and pollution at offshore oil and gas drilling, dumping of toxic waste, sewage flowing
direct into the ocean, and over-developed coastlines that funnel pollutants into the water cannot be
avoided. These pollutants are mostly anthropogenic and microbial degradation plays an important role
to reduce the build-up of toxic chemicals. Degradation of halogenated organic compounds are
highlighted because carbon-halogen bonds are the most recalcitrant. Using an emerging technologies
in engineering, physics, mathematics, natural science and the integration of technological innovation is
important to solve this problem. In this study, a novel dehalogenase producing bacterium was isolated
from hypersaline environment-Tuz Gölü Lake in Turkey, and identified as Pseudomonas halophila
strain HX (ID. KR071871). Under optimal growth conditions P. halophila HX almost completely
degraded (99.3%) of the 2,2-dichloropropionic acid (20 mM), a model contaminant. The dehalogenase
gene (dehHX) of P. halophila HX was amplified via PCR and the deduced amino acid sequence
(DehHX) revealed that it belongs to a Group I dehalogenase, with high sequence identity (82%) to the
previously reported DehI. The putative acid amino and protein structure of this halo-stable bacterial
proteins is possibly due to their adaption over the course of evolution for enhancing functionality in
hypersaline environments, an important aspect in their survival under such extreme condition. In this
context, bio-prospecting for haloalkanoic degrading microorganisms in highly saline environment may
prove to be a practical bioremediation of contaminated coastal areas.

The Advantages of Information and Communications Technology
(ICT) in Science Education
Kulthida Nugultham
Faculty of Education and Development Sciences, Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saeng
campus, Nakhon Pathom, Thailand
Abstract. Nowadays, the digital technology is a wildly use in education. There are many educational
proposes from ICT such as teaching, learning, assessment and evaluating. Science is one of the
problematic knowledge about nature, phenomena, substance, theory, and law. Also, it concerns in
science process skill practice and attitude toward science. This study is to analyse what is the properly
ICT using in the science classroom. The main ideas of how to apply ICT at any stage of teaching explain
in term of technology and pedagogical content knowledge for teachers and the learning process for
students. The summarise is help the facilitator to categorize ICT and choose the right one to implement in
all aspect of the classroom.

Soft Power and Cultural Choice in Education: A Case study of
Indonesian in Australia
Dr Paul S. Thomas
School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics, Monash University
Abstract. Modern language study has been a key element in the curriculum of Western education
systems since the early 20th
century. The introduction of modern languages was, in part, a response to
a world whose cultures were being brought increasingly in contact with one another through
technological advances in communication and transportation. These advances allowed for a rapid
expansion of international commerce and the rise of diplomacy both of which relied upon cross
cultural communication to be effective. In terms of diplomacy, the introduction of modern language
programs helped provide the basis for a more democratic understanding of the cultural influences on
the negotiations between nations while laying the foundation for what is now referred to as people-to-
people diplomacy. This paper reviews the case of Indonesian in Australia which has been part of the
country’s education system since the late nineteen fifties. The study of Indonesian as a foreign
language is a unique feature of the Australian education system being the only country outside of
Indonesia to offer programs in the language from primary to tertiary levels. However, in recent years
the programs have experienced declining numbers and in some cases closure in many schools and
universities. The focus of this paper is to review possible causes for this decline, in particular the lack
of representations of Indonesians in popular culture and the limitations of government policy
initiatives.

Unravel Entrepreneurial Mindset in Indonesian Higher Education
Institutions
Dorojatun Prihandono

Abstract. The word of Entrepreneurial in higher education institution relates to characteristics of
social system involving elements in universities such as departments, research centres, faculties and
any collaboration with other parties. Entrepreneurial is a concept in which it is highly related to
institution-building because institutions need to take risk in introducing new practices to innovate its
activities. One of the main things a university can do to explore its entreprenurial and innovative
potential is by conducting an assessment. One way to do this is by implementing HEInnovate tool. It is
a self-assessment tool for higher educations institutions (HEIs). This paper aims to provide the self-
assessment result using HEInnovate Tools at Economics Faculty of Universitas Negeri Semarang.
This self-assessment offers a few glimpses of current situation at the institution related to
entrepreneurial activities by seeing from seven broad areas; Leadership and Governance,
Organisational Capacity (Funding, people, and incentives), entrepreneurial teaching and learning,
preparing and supporting entrepreneurs, knowledge exchange and collaboration, the internasionalised
institution, and measuring impact. There were teachers, students, and administrative leaders actively
involved in applying this tool to assess the above areas. The result of this assessment will later be used
as a basis in creating action plans to support UNNES in the process of becoming better entrepreneurial
university.
