Predictor December 2018 Page 1 Packard Club of San Diego PREDICTOR- The monthly newsletter of the Packard Club of San Diego December 2018 Could this be Tony Curtis checking out a 1953 Packard Caribbean Convertible? And who is in the car? I think the lady is actress Jean Peters and the other guy looks like Howard Hughes. The photo was taken at the Packard Proving Grounds. Tony was a car guy but not a collector. He and Clark Gable had matching Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwings. We are preparing for the New Year and more fun-filled things to do with our Packards. You will note in this issue that we have a planning meeting on January 12, 2018 at a yacht club. In case you think ‘why a yacht club and not a car place?’ remember that Packard also built marine engines for both private use and the military. In fact, during the Prohibition Days, the Packard Liberty Engine was the engine of choice for bootleggers. The revenuers didn't have anything that could touch it. Everyone is invited to the planning meeting and asked to be attentive and offer ideas for things you would like the club to do next year. Believe me, we really, really want that kind of talk. Maybe you can get the Packard out of the garage and on the road next year. Packards are like us: when they sit too long, they get stiff. Special request. Consider sending an e-mail to Steve at [email protected] stating what events you enjoyed in 2018 and what you would like next year. It takes only a minute and you won’t be asked to do anything else. PREDICTOR- The monthly newsletter of the Packard Club of San Diego

    December 2018

Could this be Tony Curtis checking out a 1953 Packard Caribbean Convertible? And who is in the car? I think the lady is actress Jean Peters and the other guy looks like Howard Hughes. The photo was taken at the Packard Proving Grounds. Tony was a car guy but not a collector. He and Clark Gable had matching Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwings. We are preparing for the New Year and more fun-filled things to do with our Packards. You will

note in this issue that we have a planning meeting on January 12, 2018 at a yacht club.

REGIONAL DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE By Richard Schauer

Signs of Christmas are everywhere, putting us all in a festive mood. Living in the Greater Chicago area in the late ‘60’s and ‘70’s, a very popular thing to do was to take the train into the Loop, walk the few blocks to State Street, and enjoy the breathtaking store windows at the major department stores. As a young married couple, we bundled up and went downtown with friends each

year, enjoying the holiday music, smiles on everyone’s faces, buying one of those incredible hot dogs from those famous street vendors, and capping the visit off with a hot chocolate and Frango-mint liqueur truffle or two at Marshall Field. What memories do you have that make you smile?

Looking back on November we have so much to be thankful for. Our health, our families, our homes, and this great place to live where we can enjoy our Packards year round, to name a few. On November 13, the tour to the Temecula Olive Oil Company was very successful (see article). Folks who could not attend are urged to do some research on this hidden jewel east of Temecula, and put the place on your list. November 3rd featured a combined event sponsored by the Pierce-Arrow Society, which included a tour of Billy Sandvik’s shop in Ramona followed by a stop at the Shoberg ranch and an outdoor movie after sunset. Approximately 100 people attended.

Once again, I urge everyone to sit down and renew online or write out a check for your 2019 membership dues in Packard Club of San Diego. Renewing is easier than ever this year. Click here to renew online using PayPal. If you prefer the old-fashioned way, please make out a check for $15 (our dues have remained at this low price since 1996 – 24 YEARS!) and mail to Karl Ramsing at your earliest convenience. (See page 12.)

Looking ahead to 2019: a New Year’s luncheon is scheduled for Sunday January 6 (see flyer, next page). Join your fellow members in welcoming in the New Year in fine style at the Southwestern Yacht Club. Special parking will be set aside for our Packards, so plan to drive yours! The January 2019 Activities Calendar Planning Meeting is at 9:00 am Saturday January 12 (see flyer). The planning meeting is always open to our membership. If you attend, please bring ideas for 2019 tours with you. Beverages will be provided and breakfast is available for purchase. You must RSVP for this event by January 8th because space is limited.

A ‘heads up’ for May, 2019: Packards of Oregon is hosting the annual All-Western Regional Tour May 16-18 in Ashland, Oregon. San Diego Region members are making arrangements for a carrier to transport Packards to Oregon (unless you plan to drive your Packard to Oregon, of course). Look for more information soon on accommodations and events scheduled. 2019 promises to be a banner year to get our cars out on the road in front of an admiring public.

Concluding, I wish everyone a safe and merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

    OUR HERITAGE December 1976

The tour described by Mark Rothermich sounds like a fun one to do again.

A question from the Editor: Do you enjoy these excerpts from our history as described in past Predictors? Send comments to Steve at [email protected] about this or any other subject. We encourage criticism; it makes us try harder.

  • San Diego Regional President, officially welcomed everyone and turned the floor over to Fred Mauck. After a few well-placed remarks concerning the inability of members to follow a map while on tour, Fred introduced the evening's presentation, a factory film introducing the 1940 Packards. After a few false starts, Jerry Kill got the projector going for an excellent film. Following the film, Bob Nemeth presented his slides of this year•e National Tour to San Antonio with a running commentary provided by Bill Lauer. Aftel"Wards the party adjourned to the Bahia Belle for a late evening's cruise on Mission Bay.

Sunday morning was greeted by a caravan of Packards headed east to the heart of San Diego's Mountain Empire, Julian, California. Seventy miles am 4000 plus feet above sea level later, we arrived in Julian. On the way there we toured through the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park with its towering stands of oak am pine that rim sparkling meadows along the highway. After spending a pleasant morning sightseeing in am around town we took off for the Pine Hills Lodge for one of their famous Bloody Mary Brunches •.

After lunch it was back to town through several other inlam communities. Upon reaching the main highway the infamous "Butterscotch Flash" struck again, out racing Bill Hayes and his '53 Henney-Packard Ambulance.

After a quick change and freshen up at the Hotel, we headed for the home of' Joe & Pauline Whitaker for a late afternoon cocktail party. Joe & Pauline really outdid themselves with a seemingly never ending supply of food and drink. At the party San Diego VP, Lloyd King, nresented awards to the winners of the Ladies Concours held that afternoon. The winners were as follows: Joe Whitaker for The Cleanest Glove Box, Lloyd King for the Brightest Whitewalls, Charles Welch for the Cleanest Engine Compartment, Fred Mauck for the Most Unusual Item Found in Trunk, Roy Peeler for the Loudest Horn, Walr Johnson for the Most Clutter Under the Front Seat, Bob Nemeth for the Most Accurate Clock, Al Wilson for the Brightest Chrom and Stainless Steel, am Bill Hayes for the Most Unique Packard on Tour.

Momay brought a close to this year's tour at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in San Pa:squal. After a morning snack of hot coffee and donuts, the members toured this unique park operated by the San Diego Zoological Society. Afterwards it was so long am farewell to San Diego am a most successful and enjoyable tour.

    Temecula Olive Oil Factory Tour

Saturday November 10th By Richard Schauer

Saturday November 10 could not have been a more perfect day to fire up our Packards and go on a tour. The route to the Temecula Olive Oil Factory took us over familiar territory up old Hwy 395 to Temecula and then east 18 miles to tiny Aguanga (blink and you miss it), a whistle stop on Hwy 79. Many times Karen and I drove on Hwy 371 north through Anza on the way to Idyllwild or Palm Desert, but we had no idea what treasure lay nestled just off the road at Aguanga. The Temecula Olive Oil Company should be added to anyone’s “must see” list of things to do in the greater San Diego area.

Making the trip were Jim and Catherine Woolsey in their beautiful 1935 12 Limo, Past President Phil Pizzuto navigating recently restored Evelyn, and Brian Wagner tooling along comfortably in his stunning 1940 touring sedan. Karen and I drove the ’34 so there were four Packards in total on the tour. Also attending were Rick and Lynn Carlson from Lake Elsinore, Ron Steffey and daughter Jennifer, and Mike and Tana Campana who came as our guests. Driving tours have declined in popularity with our club, but there remains a core of committed members who look forward to them. We will continue to schedule driving tours in the future.

The group getting the scoop on olive growing Not everyone is paying attention. Umm, something on the ground here How many know that the vast majority of extra virgin olive oil we buy comes from Spain, or from Spain by way of Italy? How many realize that most of that olive oil is fermented…spoiled fruit? How many are aware that the growing California olive oil business now represents a little over 5% of the total market, and is increasing? These are a few of the many things we

learned during the hour and a half long tour. Our docent, Tom, along with his wife, are the owners of the grove. How many know the difference between a grove and an orchard? Answer: a grove is comprised of trees that are green year round, while an orchard

Four Packards, from the far left end is the Woolsey’s ‘35 Limo, the Schauer’s ‘34 Touring Sedan, "Evelyn" Phil Pizzuto's ‘39 Touring Sedan, and Brian Wagner's 1940 Touring Sedan.

consists of deciduous trees. So many things we learned thanks to Tom. Plus, the land in and around Aguanga has a rich and varied history. Did you know the Mission Olive tree variety is so named because the friars brought the tree over from Spain in the 1700’s, and through experimentation and grafting developed the perfect, drought tolerant tree? The tour took us through the 32 acre experimental grove where 36 varieties of olive trees are growing, and then to the building where olives are crushed (it sounds like popcorn popping) and oils and other precious juices extracted. We returned to the starting point where everyone sat down for the tasting. There is so much to remember it is impossible to relate it all here, but if you choose to take the tour, you should bring a notepad to record the wealth of information about what olive oil and blend combinations are good for which food groups. One that interested us is turkey prepared with bacon strips under the skin and basted with basil olive oil! We must try that.

The tasting of the oil, a tradition going back thousands of years. Jennifer and Ron Steffey with Karen Schauer

After the tour everyone turned west 3 miles to the Stagecoach Inn for lunch. Not an “Inn” in the true sense, this roadside bar/diner is so named because the Butterfield Stage once had a depot there. The food was respectable but the service was slow. So much time was eaten up (pun intended) with lunch that time ran out for a trip to a winery. All but four cars headed for home with lots of nice memories of the day.

Lunch was finally served, and everyone dined and then bid farewell.

    BE A CHICKEN DINNER WINNER

The Chicken Dinner winner for November is Mr. Brian Wagner. This is a 1938 Opel Admiral. It has 75 hp with a top end at 75 mph. In 2017 it was sold to Groupe PSA. The car was sold in the United Kingdom under the name Vauxhall.

Be the first on your block to win that chicken dinner by sending Steve the make and year of this car.

This automobile was not a low production car by the manufacturer. In fact over 4,000 were made. You have a rear view to help out. Some models came equipped with a third head light in the center.

    Webmaster’s Corner

    by Mark Burnside

Many of you know that this year we began offering the option to do online registration for events, such as ralleyes and tours. With just one click of your computer mouse, you are transported to an online registration form where you enter the necessary information, then click “Agree” and you are automatically registered. No more phoning or sending emails to RSVP for events! It is rewarding to see that with each event more people choose the online option for registering. About 30% of participants are currently using online registration feature, and each month more elect to do so. But have you noticed that you can now register AND PAY for events like our Holiday Party, the New Year’s luncheon, and even membership renewal online using PayPal? PayPal is an easy, safe and completely FREE way to pay for our events that have a price for participation. There is absolutely no additional cost to you as the purchaser when using PayPal – and all you need is an email account. Look for this icon to simplify your registration or renewal process! For those of you who are not sure where to register (or pay) for events online, there are four places to find the events. Let’s use our upcoming New Year’s Luncheon (Sunday, January 6, 2019) as an example we can walk through together. Once an event is finalized, in this case the Luncheon, a flyer is developed listing all the pertinent information. This flyer is put in the Predictor and on the website for our membership to consider.

The first place you can find an event flyer is in your e-mailed copy of the Predictor. The flyer for an upcoming event has a link that takes you to the on-line registration/payment form.

The second place to register is on the website Home Page (www.PackardSanDiego.com). Towards the bottom of the Home Page is a section called “Upcoming Event”. Clicking there takes you to the flyer.

The third place to register or pay online is from the website on the Calendar page. Clicking on the blue text for the event takes you to that same flyer.

The final place to register and pay online is through our Packard Club Store. Any Packard Club of San Diego activities requiring payments, and the Packard Club of San Diego Membership Renewal is found on Page 2 of the store.

Towards the bottom of the first page of the flyer you see the icon. Clicking on it or the adjacent blue text redirects you to the registration form where you can select your meal choice(s) and pay. Now, isn’t this far easier than printing and manually filling out a paper registration form, writing a check, finding an envelope, addressing the envelope, finding a stamp, and taking it to the Post Office?

By the way, for those of you who still haven’t renewed your membership for next year, the Membership Renewal PayPal icon can also be found on the “Members Only” page. Or, you can click here to renew your 2019 membership online right now. We currently offer only PayPal as an electronic payment option. However, in the coming months we plan to add credit cards as an additional convenience. Your Board is continually looking for ways to make your Packarding experience easier and more enjoyable. We hope you’ll take advantage of these in the future.

Best wishes to you for the Holiday Season!

1938 Packard 6-Cylinder Engine and 3-Speed Transmission For Sale.

The engine was in running condition when it was removed from the car. It developed a knock which is probably a loose connecting rod. The engine has well under 10K miles on it since being overhauled about 4 years ago. The cylinder head was resurfaced and the cylinders were bored. Then, all new valves & guides and new pistons & rings were installed. The engine rebuild work was performed by Kenyon Machine Shop. The flywheel was resurfaced, and a new clutch & pressure plate and a new throw out bearing were also installed. These parts are located in San Diego, CA. Best reasonable offer.

AUTOMOBILES SEEN IN GERMANY By Steve Ross

In September, Carol and I spent seven days in Stuttgart Germany totally immersed in all things automotive. Much of our trip was centered around the Mercedes-Benz automobile and its history. Here are a few photos that might be of interest to you. I saw one Packard in a private storage facility, which is quite common there. It was covered and the docent was not allowed to uncover it.

    Photography was not permitted.

1909 Benz 200 PS Rennwagen aka Blitzen Benz. This is the real deal and was the first European automobile to break the 142 mph barrier. The record of 142 miles stood until 1919 when Ralph De Palama broke it driving a Packard to a speed of 148.875 mph. Photos taken at the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

This was the centerpiece of the Mercedes-Benz Museum. This 40hp 1902 Mercedes Simplex is the oldest Mercedes automobile still in existence. Designed by Wilhelm Maybach it is the first automobile of the modern era. The term Simplex is used to describe the ease of handling. The Mercedes was the name of the automobiles made by the Gottlieb Daimler DMG prior to their merger with the Karl Benz company in 1926 when the cars were named Mercedes-Benz. This is the 1888 Benz motor car that Bertha Benz used on her world famous first tour in a motor car with her two sons. Bertha said "we left at dawn while my Karl was still sleeping.” Several automotive firsts were accomplished by Bertha. To begin with, the car was stolen; it was illegal to drive the car on public roads; Bertha modified the brakes shoe from wood to leather, established the first automobile fueling points and recommended a modification to the transmission. The total miles driven-- 111.847! There is an annual event in Germany celebrating her drive. Photo taken at the Karl Benz shop in Mannheim.
