A stunning combination of classic metal balusters and contemporary wooden rails, for a traditional staircase with a modern twist. Consisting of pre-drilled handrails and baserails in white oak with a choice of decorative metal balusters, it makes for quick and easy fitting. Install with our stop chamfer or classic turned newels to create a look that will suit any home.

Or choose contemporary glass panels and sleek brushed nickel fittings to complement the clean lines of Trademark stop chamfer newel in white oak to create a look that has a modern edge with a hint of tradition. Elements® with Glass is quick and simple to install using easy fit brackets. It even comes with half width glass panels – ideal for short runs on landings.

FUSION® COMMERCIAL

The Fusion® Commercial system is perfect for new build or refurbishment projects. Metal connectors allow significant adjustments to suit the majority of staircase designs, negotiating both cut and closed string staircase configurations. The system has been fully tested to British standards for strength and the system satisfies 0.74kN/m loadings for non-domestic/commercial use. Suitable for timber, concrete and metal stairs.

FUSION® COMMERCIAL DESIGN

• Newels are pre-drilled and pre-mortised and the balusters are pre-assembled to save installation time on site.

• The glass balustrade is 8mm thick toughened safety glass and has been independently strength tested.

FUSION® COMMERCIAL OPTIONS

Post-to-post handrail system –

mortise and tenon fix

The Richard Burbidge post-to-post handrail system – mortise and tenon fix (also known as post-to-post) is designed for traditional fixing using mortise and tenon joints to fix the handrails to newels.This system is designed primarily for professional installation by tradesmen who are fully conversant with this type of traditional woodworking joint.

We recommend that tenons are constructed so that they are a minimum one-third the width of the handrail and half the the length of the newel post. Tenons should be draw bored using a minimum 9mm diameter dowel.

We do not recommend the use of post-to-post handrail system – bracket fix newel base heights when setting out the post-to-post handrail system – mortise and tenon fix. Newel base heights for this system should be calculated by setting out the newels and establishing where the handrail will meet the newel post.

Over-the-post handrail system – continuous fix

The Richard Burbidge over-the-post handrail system – continuous fix (also known as over-the-post) is designed for professional installation by skilled tradesmen.

This system uses straight lengths of handrail connected to a series of shaped handrail fittings and ramps which allow the handrail to flow over the tops of newels.

All handrail fittings and ramps are supplied over long and will need to be cut down to suit the individual staircase pitch.

Handrail fittings and ramps are supplied with tie-rail bolts to allow jointing of the fittings to rails. Full instructions on how to use the tie-rail bolts are supplied with the fittings.

Post-to-post handrail system – twist bracket

The Richard Burbidge patented post-to-post handrail system enables stair balustrade to be replaced and constructed quickly and easily without the need for professional woodworking mortise and tenon joints.

Fusion® Domestic Balustrading Richard Burbidge Fusion® stair balustrading comprises a patented system of pre-finished round newel posts and handrails connected together using a series of metal connectors.

Balusters and glass panels fix into place using brackets designed to adjust to suit staircase pitches between 38º & 45º.

Fusion® can be fitted to either existing or new newel bases. To use existing newel bases, these must be fixed centrally to the staircase string and the front face of the riser concerned.

Immix® Balustrading Richard Burbidge Immix® stair balustrading comprises of pre-finished square newel posts, handrails and baserails connected together using a series of gun metal brackets to suit staircase pitches between 40º & 43º.

With a grooved hand and base rail, the glass and balusters are held in with silicone and fillets between and covered with a gun metal coloured fillet stip.

Intermediate Newels

All Richard Burbidge systems have been independently tested for runs of up to 2.4 metres on landings; it is recommended that an intermediate newel is used on runs over this length.

Fusion® and Immix® glass systems require an intermediate newel on raked runs over 2.4m as well as the landing runs.

Spindle, Baluster and Glass Calculations Building Regulations state that the space between spindles should not allow the passage of a 100mm sphere.

To calculate how many spindles you need on the rake, count the number of treads between newels. Allow two spindles per tread and one per tread where there is a newel post.

As Elements® balusters use pre-drilled rails the rake calculation is - overall length in mm divided by 125.

To calculate how many spindles you need on the landing, divide the run length in millimetres by the centres listed in the table below.

INSTALLATION INFORMATION

Please use fitting instructions available to download from website - all runs over 2.4m require a newel post in the middle of the run (mid newel).

The table above is based on spacing glass panel 50mm

from inside face of newel base.

Procedure

• Measure total length of rake (stairs) from inside of base to inside of base.

• If distance is greater than 2400mm then subtract 110mm from measurement (110mm is diagonal length of 82mm mid newel base) and divide by 2.

• Choose correct pitch of stairs and work across table until the above measurement falls ideally between min and max measurements.

Example

Distance on rake between newel bases = 3500mm

3500 - 110 = 3390mm

3390mm divided by 2 = 1695mm

Staircase is 42 deg pitch, so go to left hand column on table above and go across until it falls within min max limits = 5 panels x 2 = 10 panels for rake.

Glass Panel Infill - Calculation For Landing

Please use fitting instructions available to download from website - All runs over 2.4m require a newel post in the middle of the run (mid newel).

Procedure

Take length of run in mm and divide by 290 and round up to get panel count.

Example

Distance on landing between newel bases = 2000mm

2000 divided by 290 = 6.89. 7 panels for run.

Independently Tested To Guarantee Great Performance

Reliability and safety are vitally important in a balustrade system – and to us as a company. That is why every decking balustrade system in every range is put through a series of rigorous tests and assessments by FIRA Furniture Industry Research Association (A BM TRADA Company) the recognised authorities in timber product testing. And of course, all our decking balustrade satisfies the necessary domestic Building Regulations and appropriate British Standards. The Timber Decking & Cladding Association (TDCA) is an independent, not-for-profit, technical and advisory organisation established to provide guidance on the selection, specification and use of timber for the construction of quality decks and as an external cladding for buildings.As members of the Timber Decking & Cladding Asso-ciation our balustrade ranges are audited every year to strict standards. And because our decking products are performance rated to British Standards it means they also carry the TDCA’s DeckMark® Plus symbol: a true sign of quality assurance. In certain circumstances you may need planning permission for a balcony or deck construction. To be on the safe side, check with your local authority before starting any work.

Due Diligence To Prevent Illegal Timber Entering Supply ChainAs members of the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) the UK’s leading trade body, Archwood Limited t/a Richard Burbidge has in place a Due Diligence System in line with the TTF’s Responsible Purchasing Policy to meet the requirements of their Environmental Code of Conduct and EU Timber Regulation (2013) which makes it illegal to place illegally sourced timber on the EU Market

BWF Stair Scheme

The BWF Stair Scheme is the only accreditation and certification scheme of its kind in the UK. Ranging from domestic, common and fire protected common stairs, the standard expected of the manufacturers for their stairs is extremely high to ensure quality and safety.The scheme now represents approximately 70% of the timber stair market, bringing together like-minded man-ufacturers who are committed to driving up standards in timber stairs to make the industry more competitive against rival materials and increase market share.All companies within the scheme are regularly audited to ensure their products and their production meet these high standards, and fire tested for fire protected common stairs. The scheme is managed by the BWF, and includes manufacturers, as well as approved suppliers, who play an important part in maintaining these standards.

FSC® Certification

FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation concerned with the responsi-ble management of the world’s forests. The FSC® label represents a globally recognised certification scheme tracing, verifying and labelling timber that originates from FSC® certified forests. Please ask for FSC® certified products.

PEFC™ Accreditation

PEFC™ (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) promotes sustainable, socially beneficial and economically viable management of forests for present and future generations. PEFC™ operates on the basis of mutual recognition of independent national forest certification standards that operate under one umbrella. Please ask for PEFC™ certified products.

Deliveries direct to site can be made. For orders of less than £1,000 this will be chargeable at a rate of £30 per delivery. Orders over £1,000 are delivered FOC to site. (Site means building site. We will not deliver to residential addresses under any circumstances.)

When accepting delivery please ensure that shortages or damaged products are clearly marked on the proof of delivery. Any shortages or damaged goods should be reported to Customer Services within 5 days of the date of delivery.

We will not accept any claims if this procedure is not adhered to as failure to comply with this invalidates our claim with our carriers.

Returns policy for saleable product: All returns to Archwood Limited t/a Richard Burbidge are subject to a restocking charge. The request for the return must be received within 28 days of delivery. The charge is the higher of £35 or 25% of the goods value. Please note we cannot accept returns for ‘customer order only’ products.

All orders refused due to late cancellation of the order are also subject to the restocking charge.
