Microsoft Ventures
For Innovation to flourish, it must be nurtured at multiple levels
• Big Bets. Ex. Hololens, Quantum Computing.• Cross-company weaving. Ex. AzureML was started in MSR but when
IDd as high-opportunity, was elevated into a joint venture with the Azure product group, to fully productize and release beta.
• Unearth innovation that is already there, but hasn’t been released yet. Ex: Office on iPad had been developed under Ballmer, but Satya chose to release it.
• Invite everyone to flex their innovation muscles. Ex. One Week Hackathon
• Start with the customer, then work backwards to productize or partner.Ex. NA
On the individual level…• Permission to fail (celebrating failure). Also, important that permission to fail is
equitable across all groups and backgrounds – do women + POC have to have permission to fail, too?
• Shift in perception of “heroes” -- geeks, black sheep/”weirdos” are critical bcbring multiple domains of knowledge and perspective. Group Think = death.
• Dogfooding – eating our own dogfood, trying stuff early, giving early feedback. We are ALL actors in getting our products and services to production-grade.
• Important to cross age silos, and include think about whether a product/process can “survive” the millennial tidal-wave. (Many will not – so millennial-proofing is required)
• Shift to decreasing innovation cycle times – continuous software releases; in strategic planning, 2 years ago did first mid-year strategic plan adjustment ever.
We remain as beholden as ever to public markets and hitting targets; but it’s key to enable room/space for experimenting, and weaving purpose into what we do.
Context: The Innovation Agenda• Microsoft’s customers, undergoing Digital Transformation, juggle a large volume of
Innovation initiatives, sourced from many places.
• We see smart customers growing Innovation Portfolios -- increasingly identifying, vetting and partnering with relevant early-stage startups, to test their transformation potential.
• Not every initiative succeeds – and that’s okay! The “right” goal is to maximize learning by doing (and “failing fast”). That’s much better than assuring failure, by doing nothing.
• The US and Global landscape of Startups and Accelerators is massive, constantly evolving – and overwhelming to our customers. No one can see it all.
• Microsoft is uniquely positioned to help, because we work with most.
• We can be your strategic partner to identify the “right” startups, stand up pilots, de-risk them, learn, and accelerate success.
